Good afternoon, and Congratulations Graduates! What an awesome accomplishment this ceremony acknowledges! You have completed the formal structured academic requirements for your acceptance into the profession or the academy of scientists. You have every reason to be both excited and proud. While today is all about you, I and more importantly you would be remiss if we didn t acknowledge that you have arrived here, today, through the sacrifice of many, and it is equally important that you acknowledge this to them as well: to parents, spouses, life partners, friends, colleagues and faculty. Yes faculty, too. While this is not an exhaustive list, I would really like you to think of gratitude. Unfortunately all too often we forget to thank those for whom and to whom we are grateful, so please think of them and make sure you tell them. When I received the letter from the Dean about this opportunity I must admit I had a reaction - panic is the closest
word to its description. Then, I thought about all my Graduation speakers, and, well, I couldn t remember anything they said, so the pressure was off. BUT I really want you to remember something of this, so pressure was back on, so I asked about to colleagues and friends whom I know that have done this in the past and the one thing they all agreed upon was Keep it Short. Have a great opening and a great ending and keep them really close together. So with that excellent advice I have only three thoughts for you. The first is Go Gators GO GATORS! There we go. So why do I start with this? There are two words here and let s start with the second : GATORS Throughout the course of my career I have interacted with many graduates from other institutions of higher learning and I want you to know that you are GATORS, not that you didn t know this already but you come from one of the finest academic institutions in the United States, you can compete with anyone and win. You have been exposed to some of the finest faculty in the country. You have endured, survived and in some cases thrived on an incredibly
demanding curriculum. You are entitled to and must be proud of being a graduate of the University of Florida. I am. Not the pride that morphs into arrogance, but rather the pride of confidence. A fine line distinction. You see you have all the tools for life long learning and quite frankly THAT is what you must do to remain competitive. As the profession changes, or more accurately, as YOU change the profession, you must continue to grow, adapt, inquire, and fight for the change you seek. You ARE the profession. Your vision of taking that which you receive today and improving it is your obligation, because in 30 years one of you may be back here telling the graduating class of 2042 to take from you the profession and improve it: for the benefit of the profession and society. The other part of this phrase is GO the second thought for you and to quote the opening lines of Dr Seuss s Oh the places you ll go: Congratulations. Today is your Day. You re off to great places! You re off and away.
The point to be made here is simple. I know that you know that I know you think you have your entire career planned. And I know that you know that you really don t, but you don t want anyone else to know that you don t know, so let me tell you a secret: It s ok not to know. Life is composed of a series of choices, and if you think you are going to make all of them correctly, I should remind you of your last therapeutics test. Or in my case ANY therapeutics test. To illustrate: One of my most interesting job interviews involved the vice president of HR, Elaine asking me at the outset of the interview whether given my unique employment history whether I wanted to change anything. I immediately responded No. Elaine told me to think about it, I told her I didn t need to, as I suspected that she really wanted to know 3 things: 1. Whether I had made any mistakes during those employment choices. The answer was Yes. 2. Whether I learned anything from those mistakes, again the answer was yes, and finally, whether I had made the same mistake again, the answer being NO. At the end of the interview she told me
it was the most interesting job interview in her career and that she felt she lost control after the first question. She did. By the way I got the job. So if you really think you ve got it planned, if you think your career is a straight line to the C Suite or Chair of a Department, or even Dean and if you think you have it all mapped out, I advise you to think again. For example: if you told me in 1981 when I was graduating, that I would someday work for a pharmaceutical wholesaler, I would have told you that you were nuts, in fact I m not certain that I knew what a pharmaceutical wholesaler did at that time. If you told me that I would be a lawyer, executive director of a state board of pharmacy, a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Pharmacists Association or a myriad of other jobs and professional positions I would have told you still you were nuts. So how do these all fit together? It s the small things in life that matter and you really don t know which ones will have impact.
Let me address the small things and their importance in a career: back in 1980 when I was running for Speaker of the House of Delegates for then SAPhA now APhA-ASP. At the meeting, we handed out sticky gators. You know the ones that you see on license plates and name badges at meetings. One student from the University of Kentucky asked me if I had another, but we were all out, so I peeled off mine and gave it to her. Fast forward to 1996, and the intervening years of meeting at APhA once a year for the meeting and occasional trips to Kentucky for her installation as President of the Kentucky Pharmacists Association and her wedding and we meet at the APhA meeting in Nashville where Melinda [then a member of the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy] sees me on the last day and asks me if I m interested in the job as Executive Director of the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy. Sure, why not. I get to go up to Kentucky talk about myself for an hour and no one thinks of me as egotistical. Ironically, they like me and hire me, who would have thought? Oh the places you will go. By the way when I received the offer, Melinda opened up her
Filofax, the thing we used before cell phones and there was the sticky Gator I gave her in We are still lifelong friends. Or as a student and early in my career I used to run in the mornings at APhA Meetings with Tom Foster and Jerry Halperin and worked for both of them one at the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy and the other at USP. Who would have thought? And I used to say I would never leave Florida. But I ve been to Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri and Ohio. But each of these activities made me who I am and made me the person Elaine hired. Life s experiences make us who we are. It s not what I thought as I had my life planned. But oh the places I have been. So, that completes the second message to you: GO. You must be willing to entertain opportunities as they come your way. You never know the places you ll go. And you know not the path you will take. One last story: I became an attorney primarily because Bill Noriega, the father of my classmate and best friend in pharmacy school, John Noriega, one day
suggested that I should consider going to Law School. So if someone successful and respected suggests something, give it consideration. Be open to living a life of adventure, seize opportunities, accept challenges, Oh the places you will go. You just don t know and its ok not to know. My final message is simply to live a meaningful life. It is to take the life you have and make it meaningful. I start with a quote from Soren Kirkegaard, the Danish philosopher: What I really need is to get clear about what I must do, not what I must know, except insofar as knowledge must precede every act. What matters is to find a purpose. You have the knowledge, UF exposed you to that, now get clear about what you must do. Make everything that you do purposeful, that is how your life will have meaning. Advance the common good.
To continue with the theme of finding meaning in life Michael Frankl a holocaust survivor in his book Man s Search for Meaning identified three possible sources for meaning in life: work or a productive contribution or creation; love or caring for another person and courage in difficult times. Whether your meaningful life within the profession involves patient care, management, government, research, academics or a combination of all of these, remember that it is but onethird of a meaningful life. Don t forget love for another and the exercise of courage. Finally, I would like to quote from MASH a television drama about the Korean Conflict that that ran from 1972 to 1983, yea my era. In the final episode, Colonel Potter is speaking to Major Houlihan, also known as Hotlips, and he advises her: Goodbye, Margaret! I know you ve got your career in order; don t forget to have a happy life, too. When I read this section to my partner, John, he advised me that you might not know about MASH, heck, its on TV Land, Google it.
So finally, Thank You, Congratulations and don t forget to have a happy life too. Go GATORS
