Researchers at UNC Charlotte examined hundreds of RFP s and selection processes and discovered some common themes amongst projects that end successfully: A simplified selection process Interviews focused on project execution Use of performance metrics Learn more about these findings and walk away with tangible suggestions that can help improve team alignment and project outcomes. 9:45 10:00 am BREAK 10:00 11:00 am SESSION II BIM to FIM = VPDCx3 Scott Jones, Georgia Institute of Technology How to successfully operate digitally in an increasingly complex built environment. As buildings have been getting more and more complex in some ways the tools we use have evolved faster than our best practices - i.e. technology is evolving faster than we are. What can we do about that and how can we better use the tools out there to plan more effectively in order to smooth out the bumps in the road. We have been exploring that paradigm shift at GT for a while now and will share lessons learned along with what works and what doesn't with some case studies from the beginning of the process through project close out and hand over to operations. 2 Why Technology is not a magic button 11:00 12:00 pm SESSION III WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN THE AEC INDUSTRY COMBATTING LABOR SHORTAGE Zach Fields, Construction Education Foundation of Georgia; Jamie Jordan, Technical College System of Georgia; Mike Dunham, Associated General Contractors of Georgia The purpose of this presentation is to explore the current labor shortage in the AEC industry especially as it relates to the southeastern United States, the impacts this shortage is having on construction projects, and what is being done to combat this impact both in the short term (understanding cost impact and planning for this while budgeting projects, recruiting high school students) as well as with long term solutions (free tuition for certain trades, instituting construction programs in K-12 education, changing the perception/image of technical trades). 3 S P E A K E R B I O S ALEX CHAMBERS Mr. Chambers is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of KDC's Atlanta office including the Dunwoody Master-planned project and new development projects. He has over 25 years of experience in the commercial real estate, development, law and banking industries. Prior to joining KDC, Chambers spent two years with Jamestown in Atlanta, GA and nine years with Cousins Properties in Atlanta, GA and Austin, TX, developing office, retail and mixed-use projects across the U.S. Prior to joining Cousins, Mr. Chambers was a real estate lawyer in Atlanta with the firms of King & Spalding and Parker, Hudson, Rainer & Dobbs. MICHAEL DUNHAM Mike serves as Chief Executive Officer for the Associated General Contractors of Georgia, Inc. (AGC Georgia). The trade association is a statewide chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, and is comprised of 600 general contractors, residential/light commercial builders, construction managers, design builders, municipal-utility contractors, heavy and highway contractors, specialty contractors, service providers, and suppliers from across the state and southeast. Mike directly reports to the association s 36-member board of directors. He is responsible for the overall operations of AGC Georgia, its member-owned workers compensation program, CompTrust AGC Mutual Captive Insurance Company, and the association's multiple employer 401k, AGC Retirement Savings Program. Employees from more than 65 member firms participate in this program that has assets totaling over $107 million. Mike is an advocate for Georgia s construction industry in the following roles: Active leader in the Governor s office of High Demand Career Initiatives Member of the Governor s Office of Workforce Development Trade Five campaign Registered lobbyist for AGC Georgia; member of Georgia Professional Lobbyist Association Member of the Georgia Southern University Construction Management Program Industry Advisory Board An officer of AGC of America s Executive Leadership Council Member of the American Society of Association Executives and the Georgia Society of Association Executives Upon graduating from Northeast Louisiana University in 1979, Mike began his professional career with the AGC organization as managing director of the Northeast Louisiana Contractors Association. Beginning in 1989 he took the helm of the Northeastern Florida Chapter of AGC as executive vice president. Mike is an empty-nester with his wife, Debbie.

4 ZACH FIELDS Zach Fields serves as Vice President for the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia. He supports over 150 skilled trade programs in Georgia s public schools. As a former high school teacher, he is driven by a passion to connect young people to the incredible opportunities in the skilled trades. Zach coordinates CEFGA s K12 Pipeline initiative with trade associations, individual employers, GADOE, and SkillsUSA to advance and elevate the craft training programs in the state. He is an NCCER Master Trainer and serves on boards for TradeFive, Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education (GACTE) and the Trade and Industrial Educators of GA (TIEGA). Zach is an active member of the Roswell Rotary Club, middle school leader coach at North Point Community Church, youth football coach, average woodworker, proud husband and father of four. ANN HANLON As Executive Director for the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCIDs), Ann Hanlon is in charge of the organization s daily operations, as well as its investments in transportation infrastructure. The CIDs have an annual operating budget of $8 million. Previously, Ann was the Executive Director of the the North Fulton CID for 12 years, beginning when it was a start-up. Prior to joining the North Fulton CID, Ann served as a Senior Program Specialist at the Atlanta Regional Commission. She began her career in the private sector, as a Research and Development Analyst with Press Ganey & Associates, a healthcare consulting firm in South Bend, Indiana. A native of South Georgia, Ann received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Government and Computer Science from the University of Notre Dame, and a Masters of Public Administration degree in Management and Finance from Georgia State University. Ann was honored as the Woman of the Year by the Women s Transportation Seminar Atlanta Chapter in November In April 2015 and again in 2017, Governor Nathan Deal appointed Ann to the Board of Directors for the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority where she serves on the Projects and Planning committees. Ann was named a Notable Georgian by Georgia Trend Magazine in 2017, one of the Atlanta Business Chronicle s Women Who Mean Business in 2015 and as one of Georgia Trend Magazine s 40 under 40 in Ann is a graduate of the Regional Leadership Institute of the Atlanta Regional Commission (2010) and Leadership North Fulton (2006). She currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Council for Quality Growth and will be the Council s first female Chairman in Additionally, Ann serves on the Board of Directors for the Women s Transportation Seminar, Atlanta Chapter, the Sandy Springs Chamber of Commerce, and the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. She has been a citizen member of the Shape Dunwoody Comprehensive Plan committee, the North Fulton Poverty Task Force and was Co-Chair of the DeKalb County Charter Review Commission. She is a Chairman s Circle member of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, the Cobb Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Chamber. Personally, Ann is a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of Metro Atlanta, a member of All Saints Catholic Church and a sustainer with the Junior League of Atlanta. She lives in Dunwoody with her husband, Michael, and their two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary Catherine.

5 SCOTT JONES 40+ years of experience as an aggressive leader of the Design and Construction process with a unique perspective in the industry of having created and delivered successful projects not only as an Architect, but also as a Contractor, a Developer and an Owner. Success as a leader has been achieved around the full spectrum of delivery processes as well as size from small to very large complicated international projects. Experience ranges from preplanning through completion spanning hundreds of projects totaling over $5 billion in value. Visionary leadership not only as an Architect but also as a Construction Manager and a Developer facilitates a proven ability to move seamlessly in the development process to achieve goals and get results. JAIME JORDAN Jamie Jordan is the Programs & Business Services Director for the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). In this role, he oversees the WIOA programming, business services, and apprenticeship efforts of the Office of Workforce Development at TCSG. Previously, Jamie served as the High Demand Career Initiative (HDCI) Program Manager for the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD). Managing HDCI from its inception when launched by Governor Deal in 2014, Jamie actualized the governor s vision of an initiative to make Georgia s workforce and education efforts cooperatively more responsive to private sector demands. Prior to the role with HDCI, Jamie served as the Liaison to the State Workforce Development Board for GDEcD. Before joining GDEcD, he briefly worked in the office of Speaker David Ralston. Jamie is a two-time graduate of the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a bachelor s degree in Political Science and a master s degree in Business Administration from the Terry College of Business. He is currently a member of the inaugural class of the Miller Leadership Academy. He is a native of Griffin, Georgia and currently resides in Atlanta. Rusty Paul In January 2018, Russell K. (Rusty) Paul began his second term as mayor of the city of Sandy Springs. Paul brings more than 35-years of federal, state and local public policy and public administration experience to the job. Mr. Paul was elected to the founding city council for Sandy Springs in November 2005 and chaired the City s Charter Review Commission and the Sandy Springs Development Authority. He was first elected mayor for the City of Sandy Springs in On the state level, Mr. Paul is a former Georgia State Senator, and in 1995, he was elected chairman of the Georgia Republican Party and served on the Republican National Committee. He served two terms on the Georgia Municipal Association Board of Directors. At the federal level, Mr. Paul was confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate as Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations in the first Bush Administration under Secretary Jack Kemp. During his tenure, Mr. Paul was awarded the Secretary s Golden Eagle Award, the highest honor a cabinet officer can bestow.

6 Mr. Paul is a past chairman of the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Center Chamber of Commerce and a member of Sandy Springs Rotary. He and his wife, Jan, are parents of five adult children and attend Holy Innocents Episcopal Church. JAKE SMITHWICK, PHD, MPA Dr. Jake Smithwick is a researcher and educator in construction project delivery and facility management at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. He has worked on a variety of projects, totaling more than $575 million in value, with 25 public and private owners. His industry experience also includes field inspection of nearly 2,000 waterproofing systems (74 million square feet) across the United States, and six years in the US Air Force Reserve (civil engineering squadron).
