Workshop Guidelines: Arrive with your instrument in tune. Feel free to bring a recorder to help with practicing. You may observe any workshop, even if you don t bring an instrument. Make sure you aren t blocking someone else s access as folks enter or leave the class. If you bring a stand-up stand, set up BEHIND those who are seated; Leave carts at the BACK of the class area. DO NOT leave your instrument unattended. Be very careful of other peoples instruments. Bring your own chair. NO SET-UP before 10 minutes to the hour (or until the previous class has cleared) PLEASE be courteous to other attendees! In the event that a workshop must be cancelled or changed, information will be posted on the bulletin board in the original workshop area. Come and receive individual attention. Bring your instrument in tune if you can. If you don't have an instrument, someone can show you on theirs. Hammered Dulcimer Workshops PERCUSSIVE BACK-UP TO JIGS** We will explore a simple strategy (different than the pattern for reels) for using the HD as a rhythmic, percussive back-up and apply it to "Swallowtail Jig." This is not a repertoire workshop, so it will be helpful to learn the tune in advance. Please see my handout for the basic tune. PERCUSSIVE BACK-UP TO REELS** We will explore a simple strategy (different than the pattern for jigs) for using the HD as a rhythmic, percussive back-up and apply it to the Silver Spear. This is not a repertoire workshop, so it will so it will be helpful to learn tune in advance. Please see my handout for the basic tune. TUNES TO ADD TO YOUR REPERTOIRE This workshop is geared to someone who is familiar with the layout of the hammered dulcimer and already knows a tune or two. Learn a couple of new fiddle type tunes that have some repetition and are easy to memorize, probably jigs and reels with tunes TBA. In this workshop we'll look at the structure & tools of arranging and put a few into use. These arranging thoughts/practices can also be used for arrangements of other types of songs as well as hymns. CHRISTMAS IN JULY! "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" Well... maybe not, but this fun and spritely Christmas time song is a great add to your seasonal play list. With a fun intro and ending it is sure to please. Come on and join in the fun! FLORIDA BLUES Could this be the way I feel when some of our musician friends go south for the winter? Well, regardless, this catchy fiddle tune with a little bit of funk is definitely a pleaser. More of a fun and different fiddle/ bluegrassy tune than true "blues" - but it is a quick study and a keeper! FROM THE BEGINNING PLEASE 2 HR. CLASS In this 2 hour workshop you will receive a handout highlighting10 key aspects of playing the H.D. - and we'll touch briefly on each one - but mostly we will explore the Hammered Dulcimer with our hammers and try to get a good "ground base" understanding that will apply to future learning & playing! HAMMERED HYMNS I My beginner Hymn choice for 2016 is: "In The Sweet By And By" - this will be just the main melody with step by step guidance in learning it on the hammered dulcimer. You will have no trouble coming away with this song intact, and on your song list - even if you just bought a dulcimer yesterday! HAMMERED HYMNS II "How long has it been, since you've talked with the Lord - and told Him your heart's hidden secrets." This is the first great line of this heartfelt hymn by Mosie Lister. Come and add this song to your gospel repertoire - taught with various embellishments to enhance, upon the hammered dulcimer. LEARN A TUNE

Sephardic refers to the Jew's who lived in the Iberian penninsula, and this is one of their haunting traditional lullabies translated: "sleep, sleep". LET S LEARN SOME KLEZMER! Klezmer is a popular Jewish music style. You may be most familiar with it from the movie the Schindler's List. However, We'll be learning a more playful and less tragic tune called "Bistu Mit Mir Broigez." For those of you who want the translation... you'll have to come to the class! OVER THE MOOR TO MAGGIE SCOTTISH TRAD. PT.1 This is one of my current favorite Scottish Reels. It comes in 3 parts which we'll work intently on for the Part 1 of this class. Jeanean Martin Area 7 (166) /Adv PAINT A MUSICAL PICTURE Be expressive and musical and most importantly have fun! The hammered dulcimer is a percussive and very expressive instrument. Learn to vary your playing to include soft passages as well as loud forceful playing. The way you control the sound is by the way you hit the strings. Learn rhythmic emphasis and ornaments, as well as simple variations while learning interesting tunes. The idea is to get the fullest range of sound possible. We will learn hammering techniques and patterns specific to tunes that illustrate all the above. Get ready to move up to the next creative level with your playing! CHRISTMAS IS COMING! Christmas is coming; the geese are getting fat! Please put a penny in the dulcimer player's hat! Tips for arranging traditional Christmas carols: hammer skills, assembling medleys, and stretching short tunes (things that MIGHT even carry over to tunes you play the other 10 months!). THREE PART HAMMERED Share the melody, the back-up, and the fun making music together. Tunes are easily accessible, note reading is VERY helpful HARMONY BACK TO BACH** Polish your ensemble skills by playing a couple of Bach minuets with friends.! THREE PART HAMMERED HARMONY O CAROLAN** Hewlett is a charming O'Carolan waltz tune, made even more so when played with friends! Share the melody, the back-up, and the fun making music together. Tune is easily accessible, note reading is VERY helpful! FUN WITH 6/8 TIME 6/8 time is a compound time signature used in many styles of music, but most notably Jigs. Often times it's tricky to get the right "feel" on the hammered dulcimer, and it's easy to fall out of time in this time signature. The goal of this workshop is to show how certain hammering techniques can make this time signature easier to get the hang of and groove with. To practice this material, I will show you my favorite chord progression, which has a few different types of chords, is super fun, and sounds really cool. READING MUSIC ON HD This workshop introduces note-reading to HD players who either have no experience reading music, OR who are just not any good at it on the hammered dulcimer. I played exclusively by ear for years and the thought of reading sheet music was terrifying, but it's skill you can develop! I will show the basics of note reading and introduce some drills and cognitive tricks that will help bridge the gap between sheet music and hammered dulcimer. STARTING TO IMPROVISE If you're not a person who has ever improvised, just the thought of it can sound terrifying. I've been there! However, improvising can be an absolute blast and it's a skill that can really bail you out if you get derailed while playing a tune. This workshop will be a friendly environment to get your feet wet. We will discuss, demonstrate and practice a number of techniques to get you started playing "off the cuff". Workshop handout and online video support will be provided. UNDERSTANDING THE CIRCLE OF 5ths The circle of 5ths is a tool that is used universally by musicians of every kind. Hammered dulcimers players are fortunate to play an instrument that corresponds to this amazing tool in a very direct way. The goal of this workshop is to show HD players that correlation and help them to understand how they can use the Circle of 5ths to gain a deeper understanding of their instrument, and begin using the unique layout of the hammered dulcimer to their advantage. Learn 2 hymns you can use right away as you start your dulcimer journey. One is bouncy, the other more peaceful. MAJOR & MINOR CHORDS 2 Hr. Class This is a two hour workshop concentrating on both minor and major chords in all dulcimer friendly keys. We will be concentrating more on the patterns and especially practice than the theory. By the time you get done with these two workshops you will have a solid understanding of two chord minor-key tunes and 3 cord major key tunes. It is not essential that you have taking the pentatonic scale workshop but it would be very helpful. SO YOU BOUGHT A DULCIMER TODAY AND WANT TO PLAY TONIGHT? Are you brand new at Dulcimers or you had one under the bed for a year and want to know how it works? You'll receive enough training in this workshop so that you will be able to jam tonight. We will concentrate on pentatonic scale in different keys so that no matter what is being played you can keep up and embellish. Mixolydian and pentatonic scales will be played. Two types of minor scales will be located and played. If time remains, we will play some simple tunes using these scales. /Adv INTRODUCTION TO CHROMATICS & BLUES** This is a painless introduction to chromatic notes, blues intervals, and how to play them on hammer dulcimer. We will also practice singing with the chord patterns. /Adv A SOLO PACHELBEL CANON FANTASIA In nine clearly defined sections, we show how several distinct arrangement techniques make this version of the famed Canon idea into a joyous adventure! /Adv COLORFUL ARRANGING WITH A NEW TUNE: SYCAMORE RAPIDS How a new tune about canoeing and fishing was developed into a constantly changing experience using a mix of easy-to-understand arrangement techniques. You can learn this method, and you can reapply it in your own works! PHRASING FOR DRAMA & MEANING Beyond playing pretty tunes or showing expert technique, learn many ways you can give your music a deeply emotional or narrative effect, to make it really sing! 2/ PIANO-LIKE SEPARATED HANDS CAN BE DONE! 2 Hr. Class Using very simple tunes like 'Mary Had a Little Lamb,' 'Go Tell Aunt Rhody, 'When the Saints,' and 'Star of the County Down,' learn to use your hands like a duet - in very understandable triangular chord patterns. 2/ THE JOY AND POWER OF ZIG-ZAGS! Simple four-note chord patterns, constantly repeating, are great for free improvisation, accompanying others, and adding zest to arrangements! /Adv 1/ 2 FROM HEART TO HANDS MRS. JAMIESON S FAVOURITE This Celtic waltz is full of beauty and just cannot be missed! We'll work hard on playing this expressively, and learn some appropriate ornaments for this Scottish Strathspey. HYMNS FROM THE HEART Hymns on the hammered dulcimer are simply inspirational. We will study a well-known hymn, learning specific ways to make it more expressive. STARTING OFF RIGHT WITH ARRANGING inning arrangements can be simple and yet beautiful. You will learn to play this tune exactly the way IZ played it, using his chords, rythym patterns, and lyrics (his are a bit different than the original lyrics). We will warm up with some singing exercises, which will introduce participants to the four-shape system taught in Singing Schools from the mid-1800s to today in America.
