David and Dana will be starting a mountain dulcimer building workshop on Sunday at 2:30. The workshop will continue on Monday and Tuesday with a morning and afternoon session. Cost is $165 which includes the McSpadden Sweet Song Kit and all other materials needed. There will be a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 due to limited space. Join us for a final concert on Sunday evening at 7:00.

2 2018 Workshop Descriptions and Locations Area 1: Main area Area 2: Fireplace section Area 3: Back room Area 4: Sunday School Room Area 5: Porch (Weather Permitting) Friday, August 3 1:00 Meet & Greet, Schedules & Announcements 1:15 Area 1: Shenandoah Falls Advanced Beginning -Intermediate level Mountain. Let s learn the tune Shenandoah Falls, a great old time traditional tune. Annette will also have the chords and a great harmony tab to go with it. Area 2: Introduction to the Hammered Let Dana and David show you the ropes on the hammered dulcimer. No experience required. There may even be a loner available. Ask David Lindsey (make arrangements in advance please) David Lindsey & Dana Hamilton Area 3: Introduction to the Mountain Not only have you never played a mountain dulcimer, but you ve never played an instrument? Come have fun and play mountain dulcimer in no time. You can sound like an expert if you learn three chords. Don t have an instrument? See in advance of the class. Mary Jane Ethington Area 4: Fancier Guitar Chords Beyond just learning how to finger fancier guitar chords, you will see how easy it is to really understand more complex chords (this applies to chords on any instrument). For the D-chord, some examples would be Dmaj7, D7, D6, Dsus4, and D9. 2:30 Area 1: Songs of the Sacred Harp Let s sing the old style hymns in group harmony using the old shaped-note system to make reading music easier. Never sung Sacred Harp? Let Dave Para show you how easy it is. Area 2: Playing Waltzes Advanced Beginning Hammered This workshop will stress repertoire, with a couple of simple waltzes taught, but it will also present ideas on how to approach ¾ time, how to create simple variation and embellishment using chords and harmonies, and how to make the tune your own. Cathy Barton Area 3: Hymns for the Mountain Beginning Mountain From the tradition of 5 th Sunday singalongs, enjoy playing (and singing) some great hymns of the faith. You ll also be introduced to playing arpeggios, which is a good way to add some variation to your tunes. Area 4: Beginning Pennywhistle For the absolute beginner, come learn how to start playing the penny whistle (also known as the tin whistle or Irish whistle), plus a few hints to make it sound Irish. A limited number of whistles will be provided at no cost, or bring your own whistle in the key of D.

3 6:30-9:00 Jam time! Last year was our first jam in the evening at the community house and it was a great success! No matter what your skill level is, come join in the fun. All acoustic instruments are welcome! Saturday, August 4 9:30 Meet & Greet/announcements 9:45 Area 1: Finger Picking 101 Intermediate Mountain Finger picking adds a new and colorful sound to your music! We ll practice a couple of patterns, work at adding them to some simple songs, then look at more advanced arrangements that feature this technique. Area 2: Learn a Song or Two Advanced Beginning Hammered Let David and Dana walk you through a couple of fun old time tunes! Area 3: Let s Get Those Fingers Moving Advanced Beginning Mountain In this workshop we will play with some great tunes to get your fingers more familiar with fretting and fret numbers. All this while learning a few techniques to smooth out trickier parts. Capos needed! (I have a few loaners available). David Ellison Area 4: Fun, Old Time Songs Beginning Mountain Need more songs for your repertoire? Annette has several you will choose from, complete with chords and words and maybe harmonies! 11:00-12:00 Area 1: Cowboy Songs Intermediate level Mountain These are songs that you grew up with. These are the songs that we don t want to forget before they have gone. You know them, you have sung them, now let s learn to play them. Michael Martin Murphy would be proud! Mary Jane Brantley Area 2: Way Up North: A Swedish Tune and a Tune from Greenland Intermediate Hammered Since Red River is a ski community, one cannot help but think of northern climes, and these catchy, fun tunes fit this theme perfectly. One is a walking tune from Sweden, and one is a tune that migrated via whaling vessels from Greenland to the Shetland Islands and Scotland where it is still played today. I will teach the tunes and then give tips on how to give the tunes some life and variations using harmonies, chords, rhythm, etc. Cathy Barton Area 3: Get out of the D Humdrum Advanced Beginning Mountain One of the important ways we can show others we have gone past beginner level is to be able to play in keys other than D. It s not hard! Bring a capo.

4 Area 4: Basic Techniques and Tune for the Mandolin From beginning to intermediate levels. Dave Para Front Porch: Chords and Melodies Beginning Mountain Whether you are beginning or beginning again, this is a class that will review basic chords, combining chords and melodies, reading TAB, and how to put it all together. 12:00 Lunch!!!! Stay and eat lunch at the Community House. We will be providing lunch again for a small donation. A wonderful way to get to know everyone better. 12:30-2:00 Open Stage: Please sign up for open stage. Everyone knows a song or two. We want to encourage you in your performing and see how much you ve improved from last year. 2:15 Area 1: Fun Rhythm Instruments: David, and Dana, Cathy & Dave will be showing you some fun instruments that you will get to participate in. It will be a blast. Don t miss out on this fun workshop! Area 2: Due to the hilarity, fun, and noise of Area 1, we just can t have anything in this area! Area 3: Gaelic Hymn on the Hammered Intermediate Hammered. We will learn an intermediate arrangement of the Gaelic hymn, Be Thou My Vision, looking how adding pretty chords make the melody even more beautiful. Area 4: Taming the Timing Advanced Beginning-Intermediate level Mountain There s nothing quite like playing rounds and harmonies to practice staying in time! A quick review of time signatures and note values will take us into a fun time of playing tunes of different musical styles. Bring your capo, just in case. 3:30-4:30 Area 1: Let s Sing!! A very popular time last year! You don t need an instrument, just you! We will sing the old, favorite songs everyone loves. (Instruments are welcome, however!) Dave Para & Cathy Barton,, Judy Hamilton Area 2: open due to possible high volume level of Area 1 Area 3: Playing with Feeling Intermediate level Mountain The focus of this workshop is adding feeling to a piece of music. We will learn a tune, then build upon it by perhaps changing/adding a note here and there, incorporating arpeggios, and learning about dynamics. David Ellison Area 4: Absolute Beginning Bowed Psaltery The bowed psaltery is one of the easiest instruments to get started on, and there s nothing in the world that sounds like it! Loaner instruments will be available. Porch: Chasing Chords Advanced Beginners-Intermediate Mountain Do you play the same chords, but don t know the names? Are you stuck playing the same chords over and over? Let s take the plunge! We ll take our first position chords and discover where our common

5 chords can be found further up the fretboard. Then we ll take turns playing accompaniments to a number of songs so that we can practice our new friends! 5:00-6:30 Concert with Dana and David, Annette, and Judy, Scott and Irma, David Ellison and Cathy and Dave 7:00 Jamming Once again we have the Community House until closing (9:00)! Come join us for a great ending of a great festival. We may decide to order pizza and have a pizza party to boot! Sunday at 2:30: Hobbies in the House: David and Dana will start the workshop on building a mountain dulcimer out of a McSpadden kit. They will continue the workshop Monday and Tuesday (and can extend to Wednesday if necessary). The price is $165 to cover all materials. David and Dana will step you through all the building process. You will end up with a nice sounding, east playing mountain dulcimer. There is a 6 person limit and a minimum of 4 to make the class.
