2 Workshops (Last Update: August 31, 2018, Subject To Change) Larry Conger Workshops (I) Hymns in Two Keys This class will present several familiar hymn tunes that are played in two different keys, thereby adding interest to the arrangements. A perfect addition to your worship service repertoire. (B+) Beyond the Drone Workshops This class is intended for those players who are interested in exploring the chord-melody style of playing the dulcimer, which uses individually picked notes and two finger chords to create a more contemporary sound as opposed to the more traditional strum and drone style most often associated with the mountain dulcimer. (I) Partner Songs Defined as two songs that can be played or sung together, this class will present 2-3 duets that are designed to be partnered. Each song will be easy to learn. The fun challenge comes when the two songs are played together as a duet. This class always proves to be a lot of fun! (I/A) Southern Fried Medley This workshop is designed to demonstrate and challenge the skills of the intermediate level player with numerous hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, string bends and mutes. The medley includes "Cluck Ole Hen" "Turkey In The Straw" and "Chicken Reel." A "fowl" theme for sure! (I) Dulcimer Blues Requires a 1+ fret - Everybody loves a good old blues tune! This workshop addresses how the 1+ fret can make dulcimer arrangements sound more "bluesy." Tunes to be taught include "Midnight Special" "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "C.C. Rider." (I) Elvis Love Songs Elvis is in the building! This class will explore 2-3 songs that are actually old, traditional melodies made popular by Elvis. Love Me Tender, I Can t Help Falling In Love With You and The Twelfth of Never will be presented as time allows. (B+) Let s Get in Shape! Learning the chord shapes on the mountain dulcimer will add light bulbs to your playing. In fact, you may see a light or two come on over a few participants heads! Find out what the dulcimer salute is and play some really fun tunes in the process. (I) Hear-a-Chord, There-a-Chord Everywhere a chord, chord, But how do you know when and where to use them? Learn the 3 primary chords in any key, their functions, and how to distinguish when to play each. This should help you out in a jam.or a jelly. (B+ up) Introduction to Bass Dulcimer (B+/I) Dulcimer Duets You DO NOT have to have a bass dulcimer to benefit from this class. This class will explain and demonstrate the basics of playing the bass dulcimer as an accompaniment instrument. Learn various styles such as blues, boogie woogie, country and rock. A duet partner is not required to play these arrangements as the melody part can stand alone as a solo. The duet arrangements to be taught in this workshop are intended for two different skill levels. The melody part will be the more challenging part while the accompaniment part will be suitable for the advancing beginner. 2/6
3 Workshops Hammered Dulcimer (B+) Skill Development for Beginners This class is for beginners who are serious about practice and quickly learning to develop the skills necessary to become really good players. These skills, once learned, develop into embellishments for every genre of music. The skills and drills students will learn include vamps, scales, thirds, block chords, bounces, 3 and 4-note rolls, and arpeggios. Hammered Dulcimer (I/A) Embellishments Students will learn embellishment techniques, and then see how they can be used to create unique versions of familiar tunes (tunes sometimes selected by the class). Caution: We will NOT learn to play all of any of the tunes we select. Instead, we will cover how to use the embellishments in parts of the tunes. Hammered Dulcimer (I/A) Tips and Tricks This is one of my favorite classes to teach! Here, we combine embellishments, chords, arpeggios, techniques, skills, and practical suggestions (such as the best way to tune), to cover a wide variety of subjects that help hammered dulcimer players to improve the quality of their play. Hammered Dulcimer (N) Easy Peasy Newbie Class Students will learn dulcimer language (bridges, courses, marked courses, the valley, A part, B part, etc.) and the very basic skills that are necessary to quickly move to the next level of play. Includes proper hammer grip, easy tuning and set-up, basic hammering techniques, playing simple vamps, and the anatomy of the hammered dulcimer. Students will learn to play some basic chords and the A part to Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee and Whiskey Before Breakfast. Hammered Dulcimer (I/A) Fiddle Tune Techniques Students will learn different and interesting ways to begin and end fiddle tunes. NOTE: The term fiddle tunes means different things to different people. To qualify under my definition, a fiddle tune must be fast, can be any meter, and must be among the tunes one typically hears at a dulcimer or fiddle jam session, although new tunes are not automatically ruled out. The Fiddle tunes category includes many genres, for instance, Irish (jigs and reels and we will learn the difference), Scottish, gospel, traditional, Appalachian, and many others. We will discuss transforming a tune to a new arrangement of the same tune, simply by changing its meter (yes, this can be done!), speed, amount of swing, and emotion. Just as in my embellishments class, I allow the class to select the tunes, if possible, but I probably will use parts of Whiskey Before Breakfast, Arkansas Traveler, Mississippi Sawyer, Amazing Grace, Liberty, Morrison s Jig, and Blackberry Blossoms. Caution: We will NOT learn to play all these tunes, nor will we learn all of any of them. But we will learn to insert the embellishments. Hammered Dulcimer (B+) Simple Chords and Arpeggios Students will learn to play simple, easy arpeggios and chords in the common patterns used by hammered dulcimer players. The class will use these chords and arpeggios to play in 3/4 time and 4/4 time, and students will see how these patterns work in familiar tunes like Southwind and Amazing Grace. Butch Ross Workshops (B+/I) Great Tunes Almost Nobody Plays There are a lot of wonderful tunes out there that are well known, come learn what are sure to be your new favorites. Capo required. (I) Beatles on Dulcimer If you haven t heard of the Beatles, you should really check em out. There a great young band with a lot of potential! (B+/I) Rhythms Beyond 4/4 A fun look at time signatures beyond Common Time. Waltz, Jigs, Latin, rhythms, syncopation and even odd-time signatures will be explored. Ukulele (N) Uke can play the Ukulele The hardest part about learning the Ukulele is spelling it right. In this from-the-ground-up class we'll learn the basics of strumming and fingering chords, as well as learning how to integrate your new found skill to play with your group, in jam sessions and even your significant other. (I/A) Flatpick, Crosspick, half-strum, strum Time to learn to master that right hand, we re way beyond Bum-Ditty here. Learn exercises that will help with fluidity, accuracy and expression. (I/A) Show Off! Learn to make unusual, offbeat and fun sounds on the dulcimer. In short, stuff that sounds cool! Learn string bending, natural and artificial harmonics, Two-hand tapping, slapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs and using the dulcimer as a drum. 3/6
4 Workshops Hammered Dulcimer (I/A) Adding Chords to Melodies Being able to play a melody AND add chords to it is the skill that really takes your playing to the next level. In this workshop, Mark will show you the 3 most universally applicable methods and work with you to apply them to your own tunes. Additionally, Mark will help explain easy chord substitutions to expand your harmonic vocabulary. Hammered Dulcimer (B+) String Side Up Mark loves working with beginners and starting the next generation of dulcimer players out on the right foot. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn good habits before you have a chance to develop bad ones. You ll learn the best practices for hammer grip, stand angle/height, how to memorize note names quickly, and how to learn songs faster. We will also learn a handful of common fiddle tunes so you can feel comfortable playing in your first slow jams. Hammered Dulcimer (B+ up) Get Jiggy with It Jigs have 3 notes for every beat, which means every other beat will begin on the opposite hand, assuming you have an even number of hands. That makes jigs perfect for improving your non-dominant hand and for improving your hammer technique. We ll use jigs (6/8 time), slides (12/8), and slip jigs (9/8) to refine our technique and you ll have a great repertoire of jigs when you leave this class! Hammered Dulcimer (I/A) Sounding Irish This workshop will teach you Irish style so you sound like an authentic Irish player instead of an American dulcimer player. We ll also learn a new tune that is really common in Irish sessions but unknown to most dulcimer players to apply these style tips. Hammered Dulcimer (I/A) Instant Arrangements With only a handful of tricks, you will be able to create clever arrangements on the fly. We will learn how to construct impressive, yet easy to learn arrangements out of extremely simple tunes. Hammered Dulcimer (I/A) Technique Freak This workshop will show you how to practice and improve your technique faster and more effectively. We ll cover topics like hammer hold, rudiments, scales, arpeggios, and how to transfer these methods into your repertoire. Workshops Hammered Dulcimer (N) What s a Hammered Dulcimer? No experience necessary; Come check out this magical instrument. Learn how to hold hammers, how to tune the Hammered dulcimer. It is easy to get started and learn a few simple tunes by ear. Learn some scale patterns, learn to find octave and duplicate notes. Learn some simple exercises to strengthen your nondominant hand and get your hands alternating smoothly. Learn the logic of the hammered dulcimer. Hammered Dulcimer (B) Spread Your Wings Starting to use hand separation. With a simple tune, we will start to do different things with our hands instead of just alternation. It is really like adding simple harmony notes. We'll also find some notes outside our comfort box of scale notes. Hammered Dulcimer (B) Chords, Now What? We will be learning chord shapes and patterns and learn what to do with them. Learn how to use them as harmony, rolled chords arpeggios, open and close chord positions. Use chords as back up for tunes. Learn which chords may show up in minor, major, mixolydian and Dorian keys/modes. Hammered Dulcimer (B) Hammered Dulcimer Repertoire Hammered Dulcimer (All*) Surviving a Jam Session and Learn to Play by Ear We will learn some commonly played tunes and their back up ideas, possibilities may include Over the Waterfall, Angeline the Baker, Red Haired Boy, Liberty, Gary Owen, Swallowtail Jig, and maybe a few others, maybe some unusual tunes, depending on what you already know. How to listen to jam tunes. Using a bit of music theory, learn how to jump into a jam if you don't know the tune. Also knowing some chord progressions, learn how to back up a tune or to improvise with the tune. 4/6

6 (All) Pick a Song & Sing Along Dan Matthews Many folks love to sing and it is especially joyful to sing with others. With the exception of church, there aren t many places and occasions to do that. This is your chance. What is needed is lyrics (hard to sing if you ve forgotten some of the words), familiar songs (in this case, mostly from the folk revival of the 60s and 70s) and a few voices who know the songs and sing and play loudly (or sweetly, as called for). Like the title says, you ll pick from a song sheet with the lyrics of 80 or more songs. One or more big voices will kick off the song with guitar and keep us on the beat. We ll sing as many songs as we can, with gusto or soulfully, until the time runs out. (All) Country Line Dancing Holly & Michael DeLanoy (N) Beginning Autoharp Michele Spiro (Description coming soon) Folks had such a fun time last year with Aubrey s clogging workshop, we re offering another dance workshop this year. Time to get out on the dance floor and get moving with a fun but easy beginner country line dance, the Cowboy Hustle. This 32-count 4-wall line dance can be danced to most country western songs, alone or in a group. No partner needed! Recommend smooth leather-soled shoes or any shoes with a good slide. 6/6
