3 This is how the magic started... You walked across the stage,... shook your director s hand and... received a piece of parchment with your name on it. Those few seconds transformed you from a student into a graduate of Republic Polytechnic.

4 it s exclusive; and yes, it has benefits. And responsibilities, of course, what good thing doesn t? But as a member of Republic Polytechnic Alumni, you will be seeing much more good things for the rest of your life. To keep the magic happening, you don t have to do much. This little book will be your guide to the wonders that await you. Prepare to be heartily pleased. What are you? 5 I solemnly swear to: Uphold the traditions that mean something to me... like the REPUBLIC Code of Honour. Keep my contact information up-to-date. Take a stroll on campus every couple of years. Attend at least one alumni event each year. Encourage others to enrol in my alma mater. (Basically, tell everyone that this place is hip, swell, funky, groovy, solid, sweeeeet, awesome, happening, hot or just plain cool.) Represent RP in my community by modelling good citizenship. Give my time, talent and treasure to RP. Earn my own place among RP alumni who, by their devotion to these ideals, have brought recognition and honour to my alma mater. 6 Your time at RP taught you, if nothing else, that knowledge is the key to success. In a universe fraught with disorder, dissonance and disharmony, it s heartening to find that RP will still be there for you. With your diploma tucked firmly under your arm, you have some right to expect that the world will pay attention. But good results often depend on good behaviour. So, to help you advance in the world (regardless of what stage you are currently at), we provide you with some rules of conduct, some special advice, offered in the hope that it will help you stay connected to RP and advance in both your career and in life, all at the same time. When someone asks you which polytechnic you graduated from, say proudly Republic Polytechnic. To strangers, RP sounds like some military police. Wear RP gear. It needn t be ostentatious, but a T-shirt or pair of gym shorts with the crest on it and says I m actually proud of this place.

7 Wax nostalgic. At your next meeting, say, Gee, this milk tea reminds me of the ones they made at RP. Not as good, mind you, but they make me yearn. A little tear in the eye helps. Recommend RP to your friends. If they have a sister or brother, encourage them to apply to RP. Get a Club Republic Card. It s free and gives you access to the facilities on campus and more! Sign up for it today! Visit the campus. Whether you left three or five years ago, you ll see some amazing changes. And, of course, a lot that is still the same. Send us your . We keep you updated about your facilitators, your peers, reunions and opportunities for networking and the Alumni Magazine, dream has all the news. Why miss out? You can always say no, but you won t want to. Get involved. Your School and the Office of Student and Graduate Affairs will provide opportunities for you to have some fun, meet some students and share your wealth of experience.

All are free but if you are so inclined, make cheques payable to Republic Polytechnic. The three publications keep you up to date on news, views and events at RP. We also send out a variety of other secret communications that are exclusively for you (and the 20,000 plus other graduates just like you). Make sure we have your up-to-date address so you don t miss out. We promise not to send you Nigerian bank transfer requests, lame forwarded jokes, and chain letters. Most of this information is already available on our great website which also has a photo gallery, links to social networks, and all sorts of activities and events for the entire year! We don t get as many hits as Wikipedia, but at least our information is accurate, most of the time.

9 Time is like money. There s not much to spare. But can you spare some for your alma mater? In addition to the warm inner glow that comes about from helping others, we all know that when you volunteer; you receive massive amounts of karma* credit. You grab the last free parking spot, you get all the good Scrabble squares, you walk under ladders with abandon, everybody adores you and it makes your resume look good. Of course, if you would prefer to give in the form of cold hard cash, visit (it s not just about being able to write a cheque, it s being able to touch somebody s life! Contributing to the RP Needy Student Fund is a great way for any alumni to give back to the polytechnic). Volunteer Opportunities Serve on the Republic Polytechnic Alumni Committee (RPAC). You have great ideas about governance, curriculum, event planning, and communications. Why not share these with your alma mater? Help guide the RPAC and be a voice in the polytechnic s affairs. Organise/attend a reunion. Track down the old gang and compare waistlines, resumes and the truths of the old stories. Graduation. Welcome new members and give them a good reason to stay connected. *Karma or grace or luck or just plain good feelings - choose your denominational good vibe.
