6 MEDIA IS REBOUNDING Jobs now available, particularly for journalists with multimedia skillset Big money being invested in journalism Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com Last year Pew Center reported more than 5,000 jobs among 500 agencies, all at a fulltime level. You may not see ads for journalism jobs in Stockton often, but there are positions out there. Paid content becoming leverage for increased revenue. Online-only media now more popular than print.

7 MEDIA IS REBOUNDING Editor friends are telling me entry-level positions have increased mainly because fewer journalists are coming in with proper training Multimedia a huge plus Ethics training a big deal, particularly in a troll-saturated Internet world Strong writing skills not only necessary, but critical Incredibly strong knowledge of the Internet, social media and mass communication

8 COMMUNICATION CAREERS TOO You want to work in public relations? You ll likely need to know AP Style You ll definitely need to know how to talk to journalists You want to work in broadcast? Contrary to belief, you also need to know how to write Not everyone in broadcast is on camera You want to do social media? You need to know how to engage the audience You need to have a central understanding of ethics pertaining to that interaction

9 WE TEACH MULTIMEDIA TOO As of Summer 2015, multimedia is part of the curriculum for MCOM training at Delta College MCOM 10 has spots open, for those interested (It runs 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. MW) Multimedia storytelling website focusing on one feature-based digital story a semester We focus on building a central digital story over the course of the semester

10 YOUR FOCUS IS COLLEGIAN Six issues a semester (down from seven), with expectation of five stories minimum You may choose, with editor approval, to start producing immediately This class is a writing seminar with a lot of back and forth You will be contributing to deltacollegian.net as well You may be asked to report a story for online only Social media channel contributions are an expectation

11 DOES IT SEEM INTIMIDATING? It probably does, to be honest. But there are as many students who have completed a semester of this course as there are who haven t. They, in addition to me, are mentors to new staff members. They can answer questions. They can and will provide edits to stories. They re here to support you through the process.
