Engineering Innovation Center Fabrication Shop Basic CAD Training
Introduction The Engineering Innovation Center Fabrication Shop was established for support of undergraduate student course work. Every effort will be made to make the shop available for these projects. Students of Engineering who desire to use this equipment for educationally-related activities are required to attend training. 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 2
Overview Software WCS - Work Coordinate System Part Details Assembly Details Drawing Details Lasercutting and ShopBot details 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 3
Software Autodesk Inventor vs Dassault Systèmes Solidworks Both programs handle: 3-D Part models Assemblies Drawings Libraries FEA and other stress analysis features Preference is up to user, each software is capable of producing engineering drawings and part files. NOTE: Our software is Autodesk Inventor 2016 and Solidworks There are known issues with working with parts from different versions. If you work on a part in the EIC and you have access to a previous version, save your part file as a parasoild NOTE: This presentation uses images captured from Solidworks and AutoCAD 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 4
WCS Work Planes WCS Work Coordinate System These are the standard working planes for any given part or assembly. Start your sketch on one of these planes Top Plane : XZ Plane Right Plane: YZ Plane Front Plane: XY Plane NOTE: THESE PLANES CORRESPOND TO SOLIDWORKS WORKSPACE 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 5
WCS Base and Reference Planes Base of part should lie on the X-Y plane This important for CNC parts and for 3-D printed parts Always create parts that are anchored to an origin plane or a reference plane Solidworks requires a defined work plane to begin sketches Anchor sketches to a main axis It is tedious and inconvenient to fix and anchor parts that are made in free space, often we will ask the drafter to recreate the part appropriately FRONT PLANE XY PLANE REFERENCE PLANE FROM RIGHT PLANE YZ PLANE 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 6
Sketch Constraints All sketches should be fully defined before moving on and creating features based on those sketches Blue lines indicate that the lines are under defined Black Lines indicate the geometry is defined Red or yellow lines indicate geometry that is over defined Use the dimensioning tool, do not dimension lines and arcs directly If you manually shift lines, your geometry will not retain the dimension you entered Displayed dimensions are a constraint Constrain sketches relative to origin, it will make importing your work easier and is standard practice UNDER DEFINED SKETCH DIMENSION CONSTRAINT GEOMETRY CONSTRAINT FULLY DEFINED SKETCH 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 7
Design Tree Labeling The design tree shows the sketches, features, and reference geometries used to create the part Organization is key to communicating effectively When the machinist or technician has questions, the solid model should be able to point them in the right direction No errors should be present Even if the part continues to function normally in an assembly with errors, those errors may create problems when the part is printed or machined Label features with descriptive names Use folders to group features LABELED AND ORGANIZED DISORGANIZED DESIGN FEATURES 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 8
Fastener Library Solidworks and Inventor have toolbox libraries that contain standard components such as Bolts and Screws Nuts and washers Bearings O-rings Pins Gears and sprockets Retaining Rings Structural members When possible, make use of these components Prebuilt standard parts will save you time Prebuilt standard parts are more accurate than making your own standard parts It will be easier to source your components if you use standard parts 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 9
Hole Wizard The hole wizard is a useful tool for creating different types of holes: Tapped holes Reamed holes Slots The hole wizard will display the standard information about the hole when the part drawing is made There is no need to display the threads explicitly Symbolic threads are more efficient to render than aesthetic threads Only use aesthetic threads if the geometry of the threads are nonstandard or modified 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 10
Assemblies Assemblies show how different parts interact and work together These show the relationships between specific components and help generate the Bill of Materials when the drawing is made Assemblies should have Standard Assembly View Exploded view 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 11
Standard Assembly View Use mates to constrain the parts DO NOT mate the parts By Eye Using mate constraints allows the drafter to troubleshoot issues they may encounter during fabrication Use the Move Component Feature to determine collisions and clearances with moving assemblies 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 12
Exploded Assembly View This shows how individual components connect and come together Can make videos showing various steps of assembly Important for machinists and technicians to have Shows finer details of the assembly Sub assemblies can be shown in greater detail and how the contribute to the total assembly Ensures that parts are assembled in proper orientation 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 13
Drawings The first thing the machinist and technicians will look at Conveys information in an organized, concise fashion Tips for good drawings: 1. Dimension relative to measurable features If you can grasp the feature with calipers/micrometer, it should be dimensioned 2. Baseline dimensions are preferred for patterned features 3. Standard features (threads, reamed shafts) should be labeled as such 4. Notes should be concise 5. Fill out the title block 6. Ask the machinist or a technician for help with drawing if needed 7. Refer to ASME Y Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standard otherwise NOTE: Employers like to see engineers who are familiar with GD&T 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 14
Title Block Title block contains important information about the part Use appropriate precision when listing the required tolerances (high precision = high cost and longer lead times) To edit the title block, right click the sheet in the Design Tree and click edit sheet format. Name, Title, Tolerances, DWG No, Revision, and Material are required information TITLE BLOCK APPROPRIATELY LABELED 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 15
Table Lists and Balloons A Bill of materials list is required for assemblies Tables must list the quantity and basic dimensions of each part Separate drawings are acceptable for more complex parts Label each different part with balloons A drawing with the overall dimensions of the assembled part should also be provided BILL OF MATERIALS BALLOONS 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 16
Lasercutting and Shopbot Details Students should review the Laser Cutting Process Fact Sheet before making requests for lasercut work Note that different layers are required for cutting, vector engraving and raster engraving DXF s are required for work requests on the Shopbot Ensure the proper view is exported If you have made the drawing based on standard work planes, you can simply choose the plane to export those vectors Otherwise, make your view normal to the desired geometry and select *Current checkbox Ensure the part file is submitted with the fabrication request along with the DXF 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 17
Conclusion Unsafe practice or obvious abuse of equipment constitutes a danger to people and damages equipment. Therefore the Fabrication Shop Manager or any person observing an unsafe act should stop unsafe practices in the Fabrication Shop. Students violating any of these rules will have their Fabrication Shop privileges revoked for a period of at least two weeks. Longer periods may be assessed, depending upon the judgment of the Fabrication Shop Manager and the Engineering Innovation Center Facility Manager. 8/16/2016 Engineering Innovation Center 18
