Given access to a list of related career titles, job descriptions, training requirements and jobgrowth potential, the student will be able to research, compare, and contrast various career paths within the Commercial Arts industry and apply the research in creating their own career plan documents with 100% detail accuracy. 102 List occupational requirements. Given a projector, a laptop, and connecting cables the student will make safe connections, power the projector, choose the proper projection resolution and keyframe the image with 100% accuracy. 202 Demonstrate safe practices when using computer hardware and software. Given a sufficient work area and peripherals, the student will be able to configure chair height, wrist position and foot position ergonomically to facilitate safe working conditions with 100% accuracy. 203 Demonstrate safe practices when using and maintaining hand tools. Given an assortment of graphic tools (cutting knives, line gauge, scizzors, sharpeners, pencils) the student will demonstrate knowledge of safety precautions with 100% accuracy. 204 Demonstrate safe practices when using, storing, and disposing of paints, solvents, and chemicals. Given proper safety and fire protective equipment, a solvent or chemical, student will physically demonstrate safety techniques for handling, storing and disposal of any hazardous graphics material with 100% accuracy. 205 Demonstrate safe cutting procedures. 2 300 HAND DRAWING AND ILLUSTRATION 301 Draw objects using linear perspective. Given drawing paper, rule and drawing pencil, the students will render objects on a two dimensional surface, using the principles of eye-level line and vanishing points to create the illusion of three dimensions and meets the standard of satisfactory or better on the grading 302 Draw basic geometric and organic forms showing texture and tone. Given a variety of drawing materials students will render objects consisting of basic geometric and organic shapes by defining contour, highlights, shadow areas, cast shadows and reflected light to render any object realistically to the standard of satisfactory or better on the 303 Create line art. Given drawing paper and drawing implements to create lines, students will render objects showing contour and dimension and meets the standard of satisfactory or better on the 304 Apply anatomy concepts in drawing. Given a variety of drawing materials students will render the human figure in classic proportion to the standard of satisfactory or better on the 305 Draw from direct observation. Given a variety of drawing materials students will render objects, observed in a spacial setting, creating the illusion of three-dimensions and likeness of the object, to the standard of satisfactory or better on the 306 Produce color illustrations using various media. Given color drawing mediums, students will produce illustrations that show the local, interpretive, stylized and realistic color of objects and settings to the standard of satisfactory or better on the 400 COLOR THEORY AND APPLICATION 401 Apply the basic structure of color (hue, intensity, saturation) to generate color solutions. Given a variety of color models students will select color pallets that have harmony in value and saturation as part of a graphic solution, that meet the standard of satisfactory or better on the 402 Apply appropriate color schemes to generate design solutions. Given a primary, secondary, tertiary color wheel chart, students will select a set of appropriate colors for a design project based on standard color schemes 100% of the time. 403 Identify and apply additive and subtractive color. Using graphic design software students will select and use an additive or subtractive color model that is appropriate for the assigned project based on industry production procedures 100% of the time. 500 DIGITAL IMAGING Page 2 of 7

3 501 Demonstrate image scanning procedures. Given a scanner, resolution & scale parameters, and line, text and continuous tone originals, the student will scan and save each item at required resolution levels and at requested scaling percentages with 90% accuracy. 502 Identify the properties of vector and raster images. Given access to both a raster and a vector software program, the student will be able to analyze, explain and identify the proper digital tool for editing given graphics depending on their classification with 100% accuracy. 503 Demonstrate basic use of page layout software (e.g. Quark, InDesign). Given a page layout software program and a design specification sheet, the student will create a new document with desired orientation, page size, margins, columns, a placed image and basic text and headline frame with 90% accuracy. 504 Demonstrate intermediate use of page layout software (e.g. Quark, InDesign). Given a page layout software program and a design specification sheet, the student will set design guides, set tabs, create a bulleted list, add specified Pantone Colors, create type on a path, adjust type kerning and leading, and set paragraphs to specifications with 90% accuracy. 505 Demonstrate basic use of a vector-based drawing program (e.g. Illustrator). Given a tracing guide and a vector-based drawing program, the student will render an accurate tracing of a composition using basic shapes, lines, simple bezier paths and gradient color fills with 90% accuracy. 506 Demonstrate intermediate use of a vector-based drawing program (e.g. Illustrator). Given a vector-based drawing program, the student will demonstrate use of layers, groups, clipping paths, and color management choices by creating an advertisement and saving the resulting file for both print and web output with 100% accuracy. 507 Demonstrate basic use of image editing software (e.g. Photoshop). Given a continuous tone image and image editing software, the student will demonstrate: basic selections using marquis or lasso tools, layers management, making simple curves or levels adjustments and saving the file in the specified format with 90% accuracy. 508 Demonstrate intermediate use of image editing software (e.g. Photoshop). Given a high resolution digital image and image editing software, the student will scale for magazine printing use, color correct an image with a color cast, sharpen and save as a CMYK tiff file for color separations with 100% accuracy. 509 Demonstrate use of input, output and storage devices. Given a variety of storage devices (server, flash, disc) and a computer, the student will demonstrate the copying and transfer of files from the computer to the storage device with 100% accuracy. 510 Demonstrate the use of the Macintosh operating system. Given a Macintosh computer, the student will demonstrate program navigation, window configuration methods, file compression, file search methods as well as customization of the workspace and personal preferences with 85% competency. 511 Demonstrate appropriate use of different file formats. Given a series of various graphic file types (jpg., tiff, eps, psd, ia, ind, png) the student will be able to classify each file as to its appropriate classification as a web or print graphic with 90% accuracy. Given access to a computer and a server, students will develop a hierarchy of folders to manage their work into categories, explain the advantages of synchronization backups to a server, and perform multiple methods of file searching on their computers with 90% accuracy. 600 DESIGN, LAYOUT AND PRODUCTION 601 Research the history of advertising design. Given access to research tools students will compile information about the history of advertising design, covering early American History to the present and pass an assessment test at 85% or better. 602 Apply elements and principles of design. Given a design specification sheet students will create a graphic solution that uses the principles and elements of design based on industry standard design theory that meet the criterion of satisfactory or better on the 603 Write a creative brief. Given information orally and writen about a project, students will write a creative brief that includes the project s objective, target audience, and desired reaction of the target audience with accuracy of 90% of the 604 Produce thumbnails, roughs and comprehensive. Given a design specification sheet students will follow the design process for creating a graphic solution that include brainstorming ideas by producing thumbnail sketches, develop a rough layout on paper based on the thumbnail sketches and then produce a comprehensive design based on the rough. All will meet the standard of satisfactory or better on the 605 Design a logo. Given a project specification sheet and vector software students will produce a logo design that meets all established criteria and obtains the standard of satisfactory or better on the 606 Create an identity package. Given design software and specification sheet students will design communication materials for a company that includes letterhead, envelope and business card using the company s logo and identity marks to reinforce brand recognition and meets the standard of satisfactory or better on the 607 Demonstrate basic knowledge of printing processes. Given six finished printed substrates, the student will be able to classify each printing substrate according to the production process with 85% accuracy level. 608 Design promotional materials. Given a design specification sheet students will design communication materials that promote a service, organization, product or person in both print and digital media based on industry standard design theory and meets the standard of satisfactory or better on the 609 Prepare files for output. Given a complete page layout file with common bleed, missing fonts, and file errors, the student will accurately preflight the file, generate a preflight report, and completely list and repair file output issues with 90% accuracy. 5 610 Demonstrate knowledge of color separations. Given a complete page layout file that contains two or more colors, the student will use the separation function of the software to print pages that show each color in the document on a separate sheet of paper that correctly corresponds to the color specifications of the project with 100% accuracy. 611 Demonstrate knowledge of printer's marks and measurements. Given access to appropriate software (InDesign, QuarkXpress) the student will create a new document with specified crop, columns, margins, gutters, bleeds, and slug areas correctly input with 100% accuracy. 700 TYPOGRAPHY 701 Identify the anatomy and classification of type. Provided a diagram of letterforms in various typefaces students will label the anatomy of the type and identify its classification as Serif, Sans Serif, Script or Decorative with 90% accuracy. 702 Identify typographic styles. Given a document with words set in a variety of typefaces and their related styles students will identify the roman (regular), italic, bold, light, condensed styles of each typeface with 90% accuracy. 703 Manipulate type through character and paragraph formatting. Given page layout software and copy (text) students will set the type manipulating it in a way to enhance legibility, clarity of content, enhance the design of the page and obtain the standard of satisfactory or better on the 704 Choose and apply appropriate typeface. Given a design specification sheet students will choose typefaces that are appropriate to the subject and audience of the design and obtain the standard of satisfactory or better on the 800 DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 801 Operate digital camera and accessories. Given a DSLR or adjustable point-and-shoot camera, the student will demonstrate use of basic camera shooting modes (portrait, landscape, close-up), flash modes, red eye reduction with 100% accuracy. 802 Compose a photograph through the lens. Given a DSLR or adjustable point-and-shoot camera, the student will demonstrate use of rules of thirds in creating a photographic composition with 100% accuracy. 803 Demonstrate use of lighting. Given a digital camera (point and shoot or digital SLR) the student will be able to effectively use natural or existing lighting to maximize image clarity and to activate a flash exposure if needed with 100% accuracy. 804 Demonstrate ability to physically stabilize camera. Given access to a digital or analog portfolio space and a working model, the student will visually demonstrate basic skill areas of: illustration (digital & analog), digital image correction, page layout, photography, and career planning into a working portfolio earning a rubric score of satisfactory (7-9 pts) during senior project presentation evaluation. 902 Participate in the interview process. Given several demonstrations and model videos, the student will work both sides of an interview simulation situation and earn a score of 85% or higher on the evaluation 903 Inventory personal career interests & goals. Given yearly career interest inventory forms and a demonstration, the student will state future training and skill needs based on the career goal she/he has chosen. This will be visually represented in the career portfolio section of the senior project presentation evaluation that the student will need to score a rubric score of satisfactory. 904 Research employment opportunities. Given access to tools such as Internet based job banks and printed classified ads students will identify possible employment positions at their present skill level to 100% of grading 905 Explore postsecondary institutions & opportunities. Given a list of postsecondary institutions that have commercial art related programs, the student will be able to identify program majors tied to their career interests and list five potential schools that they feel could potentially help their careers with 90% accuracy. 906 Deliver an oral presentation. Given a demonstration and access to model presentations, the student will present their senior project to a review panel and score a grade of 85% or higher on the project 907 Prepare a resume and cover letter. Given a demonstration and several model documents, the student will be able to prepare a resume and cover letter with 100% accuracy. 908 Estimate time and materials for a project. Given a specification sheet for a project that includes due date, size, quantity, and overall objective and a cost sheet for materials, students will estimate the time and cost of doing the project within 90% accuracy of a rubric based on a like job used by the instructor during a job estimate demonstration. 909 Complete a job or college application. Given a demonstration and several model documents, the student will successfully complete application forms with 95% accuracy. 910 Prepare and present a 3-5 minute talk on a competency. Given a career-related topic, and a demonstration, the student will create a presentation outline and present a 3 to 5 minute talk on a competency receiving a rubric score of 85% or higher. Given a demonstration and small group practice, the student will be able to participate in a mock interview with 90% accuracy on the related scoring 912 Demonstrate matting and mounting a work of art. After demonstration and given matting and mounting material, including adhesives and cutting instruments, students will mount artwork to a level of satisfactory on the grading 913 Participate in critiques. Given critique criteria, a project and a demonstration, the student will be able to participate in a personal and peer critiques in a group setting and score a 85% or better on the evaluation 914 Research current industry practices.
