1 FAÇADES 2 - CT 4211 Assignment (circa 30 hours) Introduction The pictures and drawings below show a recently finished building for Stichting De Hoop in Dordrecht (Netherlands), in use as an education and conference centre for rehab workers. The architectural design of Lugten Malschaert Architecten is the starting point for the first design exercise. Like in all buildings in the De Hoop Village, the architect has aimed for a homely look, to allow the guests to feel at ease, which facilitates the rehab process. The building has a floor plan of circa 60x15 m 2, and has a basement, ground floor, first floor and an attic. The traditionally looking building has a brick façade, large windows on the ground floor level (conference and media centre), smaller windows on the first floor (offices). The roof is covered with concrete tiles. Façades 2 - CT October 2008
2 South west corner Part of south façade East façade Detail of roof overhang Top of column ground floor façade, balustrade 1st floor level South façade More detailed drawings on scale are in appendix C. Façades 2 - CT October 2008
3 What to design? For assignment 1 we assume that you are chosen to draw details of the façade for the architect. You will have to draw the following details: Vertical sections 1 4 Horizontal sections 5, 6 and 7 Draw and point out in text in your details: relevant load bearing elements in the façade (assume sizes roughly) hollow core floors slabs (assume sizes roughly, L=14 m) floor finishing layer insulation (which thickness?) cladding, anchors window frames window shading (inner, outer, in cavity) measures for air tightness measures for water drainage vapor barrier ceiling joints (think about tolerance) sealants (think about size of joints) how to clean the windows HVAC-objects (ducts, radiatiors, convectors) (assume sizes roughly) For the technical drawing agreements (scale, hatches, line weights) that you will have to base your work on, see appendix A and B. What is free to choose, what not? The following choices of the project architect, structural engineer and climate consultant are to be followed in your details obligatory: The façade is load-bearing: the weight of the hollow core floor slabs is carried by the concrete inner leaf of the façade The window sizes as defined in the drawings The façade elements will be prefabricated as much as possible; in any case the interior leaf will be prefabricated. R c -value at least 3,5 m 2 K/W U-value at most 1,2 W/m 2 K Variable sunshading, blinds in the cavity Natural ventilation through the façade You are free to make your own choices with respect to the following subjects: Lining, color and relief in the façade (depth of window placing in relation to the façade plane, horizontal or vertical accents) Type of outer cladding (brick, concrete, natural stone, ceramic, other) Type of window material (aluminum, timber, synthetic) Type of window system (climate window or second skin) Before starting you will have to make a choice with respect to these subjects, and stick to that during the design stage. Façades 2 - CT October 2008
4 APPENDIX A: DRAWING AGREEMENTS By hand or computer? Although this course is about façades and not about drawing, a good drawing communicates your ideas much better than a vague scribble. It is allowed to draw either by hand or by computer, as long as the result complies to the agreements in this Appendix. The quality of the drawing is not defined by how tight you can draw a line, but by the amount and clarity of INFORMATION you show in your drawing. A clear sketch is better than a fuzzy AutoCAD drawing. Drawing frame Show your name, student number, course code and date on each drawing. Use A3 paper or larger for overviews. Use A3 or A4 for details. Line width To make a drawing well readable, you will have to use different line thicknesses. For the contour of an object, use a thicker line than for a window detail. For a hatch use a thinner line than for the object itself. Sometimes you will use a thicker line than realistic in terms of scale, e.g. if you draw a vapor barrier, this foil in reality is 0,2 mm thick. To show in your drawing where it is, you will use a thick line of 0,25 or 0,35 mm, even if you work on scale 1:5. In the first sketch stage do not worry to much about the line width, since you will probably be working in pencil. It is possible to highlight or make important lines heavier with a fineliner in a later stage. If you use AutoCAD, please assure that you know how to work with line width and that the plots are OK. Mostly AutoCAD drawings tend to be plotted all in one thickness, making the drawing hard to read. Hatches For hatches please use the old NEN 47:1970 as a common basis; although in current building practice this code is no longer used, much of the hatches are still common. To make the interpretation of your drawings easy both for the lecturers and for the other students, please work with this code. Overview For assignment 1, please make an overview and section of a relevant part of the façade scale 1:50, in which you clearly show the position of the details 1 to 7. Show the most important dimensions Details Make the details scale 1:5 or 1:1. Show what scale you are working in. Use TEXT to make clear what you are drawing. Use labels, arrows, markers, etc. Show dimensions Draw in the right proportions, even when sketching. Façades 2 - CT October 2008
