Day 5: Activity 2/Critical Writing Narrative DAY 5 Directions: While your partner is completing the test on the computer, you will complete the critical writing activity on a separate page supplied by the instructor. When you have both finished with this activity, trade places. You will now complete the test on the computer and your partner will complete the critical writing activity. Critical Writing: You have just graduated from college with a degree in architecture. You have passed your state testing and are licensed. On the very first day in your new job your boss asks you to develop a series of 10 questions that you can use to interview families about what they would like in new homes your firm is designing. What would those 10 questions be? Secondly, your supervisor requests that you explain how you could take the answers to these questions and use a CAD program to show some of these features the potential home buyers would like to see. Remember, this is only a written explanation of how you could use the CAD program to help your employer demonstrate design ideas. Here is what your new employer needs to see: 1. A list of ten questions for prospective home buyers concerning what specific features they would like to see in a new home; 2. An explanation of how a virtual CAD program could reinforce what your company already has; and, 3. An explanation of uses for the 3D generated drawings and walk-throughs. continued 23

Paxton ActionLABS DAY 5 Narrative/Persuasive Pre-Writing to Writing Process Follow this process when writing your narrative or persuasive assignments. Prewriting: Plan your writing by thinking about the topic and your purpose. Are you explaining or arguing a point of view? A narrative piece requires you to describe in order. Persuasive writing requires you to first state your point of view, then tell why you think it is correct and present facts to support your opinion. 1. Identifying Choose the main elements you wish to write about. There should not be more than three. 2. Drafting Jot your ideas down in rough form. 3. Revising Change and improve the rough draft. Get rid of unnecessary parts. Add important material based on your writing goal to explain or defend. 4. Proofreading Correct any errors in spelling, punctuation, and clarity. Care should be taken to make the writing communicate clearly. 5. Publishing After final editing, finish the writing and make it available for others to read. Edit your piece one more time before you rewrite (publish it) for the audience to read. AFTER COMPLETING THE CRITICAL WRITING AND THE PROGRESS TEST, RETURN TO THE PAXTON ActionLABS PROGRAM. 24

Day 10: Activity 1/Critical Writing Persuasive DAY 10 Directions: While your partner is completing the test on the computer, you will complete the critical writing activity on a separate page supplied by the instructor. When you have both finished with this activity, trade places. You will now complete the test on the computer and your partner will complete the critical writing activity. Critical Writing: In this module you have learned about 3D CAD programs as well as virtual CAD programs. You have created a variety of interior and exterior designs using these virtual programs. You are the owner of a company that develops architectural computer software, like the ones that you used in this module. Develop an advertising campaign to sell your product throughout the world. You need to include what you are selling and how it works, and your main focus should be on why people need to purchase your product. This assignment will be used to persuade possible buyers to purchase your product, thus creating a profit for you and your company. The more you sell, the more money you make! Explain how you used these programs in a design project. Justify why you selected the virtual CAD programs to design your outcomes. Give specific examples of how you went through the design procedure to obtain your final result. Compare other designs to your design that you found when researching your problem. Tell how and why you came to your final conclusions. Discuss how a 3D or virtual CAD program like the one your company has developed helped create the final solution. Here s what you ll have to do: 1. Write a description of what your virtual CAD program has to offer a potential buyer; and, 2. Argue why your program will give them the best results. You can use any of the projects that you have worked on in this module as examples. Remember that this is a PERSUASIVE SUMMARY of what you think your program has to offer the consumer. continued 33

Paxton ActionLABS DAY 10 Narrative/Persuasive Pre-Writing to Writing Process Follow this process when writing your narrative or persuasive assignments. WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE CRITICAL WRITING AND THE POST TEST, FINISH YOUR DESIGN BRIEF. 34

Design Brief #1 Introduction Architects use many different technical means and graphic representations to sell an idea to a client. CAD drawings, oral presentations, multimedia presentations, and computer enhanced "walk-throughs" may be used to sell a home or building to perspective buyers. These techniques help the potential buyer "see" the building prior to the actual construction of the building. Your Task The Imagination Development Company needs creative individuals to offer prospective buyers a vision of their new home designs. The company is opening a display home in the Wondering Heights neighborhood and would like to have several different home designs on display as prospective buyers visit the display home. You and your partner have been selected to design a poster that will illustrate three typical rooms in model homes. These room illustrations should include all furniture and permanent fixtures. Materials Teams may use only the materials listed below to solve this design brief: Virtual Architecture module, computer, associated software/equipment; 1 - standard sheet poster board (instructor provided); 1 - glue stick; and, 1 - Roll double stick tape. Historical Research To solve this problem, teams will need to examine existing house plans, search the Internet, books, magazines, and other sources of information. To develop the final poster, teams will need to address each of the following statements/questions: 1. What are some examples of floor plans that already exist? a. Investigate resources such as the Internet, books, home stores, and building magazines. 2. How do modern homes differ from those built 100 years ago? 3. What are the primary design features that lead people to the purchase of a new home? 4. What characteristics can you add to your team designs that will make it different from others on the market? 5. Are there specific features that can be added for your region of the country (for example, screened porches do not sell well in Minnesota but do sell very well in Florida)? 6. What are some characteristics of the Wondering Heights (recreation, services, etc.) subdivision that would be attractive to buyers? Use your imagination. 7. Why is CAD used for this project instead of board drawing? a. How is it different? b. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a CAD system? DB1

Paxton ActionLABS Parameters While working to solve this design brief, teams should remain within the following design parameters: 1. Teams should show ample evidence of research related to the problem; 2. Teams should use PUNCH! Professional Home Design software to draw a complete floor plan of a home; 3. Teams should expand three rooms of the floor plan and include all furniture and permanent fixtures for the room; 4. These three rooms should be placed on a poster board with other information about the new subdivision; 5. A legend should be included that describes all symbols used on the drawing (Refer to page 3 in this guidebook to see an example of a legend; 6. Teams must supply a written explanation for each of the questions outlined within the "historical research" section; and, 7. Teams must prepare for and present all ideas and the poster to the remainder of the students in the class. Evaluation Team solutions will be evaluated according to the following criteria: 1. Complete Floor Plan: Did the team prepare a complete floor plan for the home prior to selecting and refining the three (3) rooms for the poster? 2. Expansion Rooms: Did the team expand three (3) of the rooms from the floor plan to include all furniture and permanent fixtures? 3. Poster: Did the team prepare an advertising poster that included the complete floor plan, three expanded rooms, and other graphic information about the subdivision? Did the drawings include a legend describing all symbols? 4. Written explanation: Did the team provide adequate written responses for each of the questions outlined in the "Historical Research" section? 5. Presentation: Did the team prepare for and provide a short presentation illustrating the poster and the room concepts? DB2

Design Brief #2 Introduction In the world of residential architecture, kitchens and bathrooms are essential rooms. Unlike many other rooms in the home, kitchens and bathrooms are designed for a single purpose. Kitchens and bathrooms must be durable, functional, practical, and beautiful at the same time in order to attract the attention of buyers today. Kitchens and bathrooms have changed a great deal during the 20th Century due to changes in architectural style, artistic tastes, and technology. For example, a kitchen designed in 1920 would not include electric outlets, a cabinet to house the microwave oven or even a dishwasher. In kitchens today, these two items are almost always included. Designing/decorating kitchens and bathrooms is a very prosperous business. Your Task You and your partner have just accepted a contract with the Ultimate Vista Home Company to design kitchens and bathrooms that they will be installing in their new line of upscale homes. The company has a reputation of being "cutting edge" so you will need to do research and include some "smart home" technology in your designs. You will use your knowledge of home design computer software and creativity to design two kitchens and two bathrooms for Ultimate Vista. Your reputations as kitchen and bathroom design gurus are on the line so be creative and innovative. Materials Teams must use only the materials and equipment listed below to solve this design brief: Virtual Architecture module, computer, and associated equipment; Kitchen and bathroom design/decorating magazines (supplied by student); Internet; 2 - Pair of scissors; 1 - glue stick; 1 - sheet of standard poster board (instructor provided); and, Appliance catalogs (instructor provided). Historical Research To design the rooms, your team will need to conduct research on home designs and decorating. Answer the following questions as you attempt to solve this design brief: 1. What kind of decorating and design techniques are popular in modern kitchens and bathrooms? a. Investigate design and home interior magazines for ideas (look for color schemes, location of kitchen components, decorations, etc.); b. Where are most kitchens and bathrooms located in homes (think of where your kitchen is located in your home and homes you have visited)? 2. What types of materials are used in most kitchen/bathroom construction? DB3

Paxton ActionLABS Parameters While working to solve this design brief, teams should remain within the following design parameters: 1. Teams must develop two different kitchens and bathrooms; 2. Each kitchen and bathroom must have a decorating scheme (presented on poster board and including wall coverings, floor coverings, types of appliances and various decorations). Note: These may be cut and pasted from magazines; 3. Team designs must be sketched on paper before being designed on the computer. These sketches must be included in the final submission of the design brief; 4. The final drawings must include a range, a refrigerator, a double sink, cabinets, a table and chairs, a dishwasher, a microwave, and an island for serving in the kitchen; 5. Bathrooms must include a sink, a full bath and shower, cabinets, a toilet, and a linen closet (implement smart home technology in the construction of your exhaust/lighting unit in the bathroom); 6. Teams must design the kitchens and bathrooms so that the customer may complete a virtual "walkthrough;" and, 7. The formal presentation to the owners of Ultimate Vista will include a posterboard that details decorating schemes, hand drawn sketches, a copy of the CAD floor plans, and a virtual "walk-through" displaying kitchen and bathroom designs. Evaluation Team solutions will be evaluated according to the following criteria: 1. Decorating Scheme: Are the design schemes creative/modern and do they adhere to the design parameters? 2. Room Arrangements: Is the overall design and placement of the kitchen and bathroom components logical, convenient, and do they meet the specifications? 3. Technology: Did the design team use technology to illustrate their designs adequately and appropriately (virtual walk-through, smart technology, etc.)? 4. Poster Illustration: Did the team prepare a quality poster illustrating the design schemes and floor plans? 5. Written Responses: Did the design team provide adequate responses to each of the questions outlined in the "Historical Research" section? DB4

Design Brief #3 Introduction Architects often create computer animated "walk-throughs" of their designs to help them market their ideas. In this design brief you will create a virtual walk-through that will assist your team in marketing a fitness center. Your Task Franco s Fitness Center has hired your architectural firm to create a virtual walk-through of a new facility. Since you and your partner do not regularly exercise, you will need to conduct a little research into fitness centers and some of the equipment before you can begin. You may want to use Internet sites, books, magazines, pamphlets from local fitness centers, or equipment sales people in your area to gather information. You should focus on safety, size, and membership incentives that may be used by the fitness industry. Finally your team will develop a "walk- through" that will be presented to the class (in an effort to entice them to join the center). Materials Design teams may use the following materials and equipment in their effort to solve this design brief: Virtual Architecture module, computer and related equipment; Health and fitness magazines (instructor provided); Internet; and, Newspaper advertisements (instructor provided). Historical Research To solve this problem, you and your partner will need to develop a virtual walk-through of a fitness center. Conduct research by examining documents obtained on the Internet, in books, in magazines, in sports pamphlets from local fitness centers, or by discussing the problem with sports leaders or coaches from your school. Answer the following questions as you and your partner gather information for this design brief: 1. What equipment is necessary in a "state-of-the-art" fitness club? 2. What are the benefits of weight training, aerobic training and the overall approach to wellness that a fitness club can offer? 3. When did fitness and wellness become popular in American society? 4. What are three (3) other items that could be included in the walk-through to attract interest? DB5

Paxton ActionLABS Parameters While working to solve this design brief, teams must remain within the following parameters: 1. Teams must develop a 2-3 minute walk-through of a fitness club; 2. Teams must develop a script of dialog that can be stated orally while the walk-through is playing. The dialog must also help "sell" the center; 3. Teams must provide written responses to each of the questions outlined in the "historical research" section; and, 4. Teams must prepare a presentation during which the walk-through will be played and the dialog will be orally stated. Evaluation Team solutions will be evaluated according to the following criteria: 1. Walkthrough: Did the team provide a 3-D walk-through of a fitness center that was at least 2-3 minutes in length? 2. Dialog: Did the team develop a dialog that supplements the 3-D walk-through? 3. Presentation: Did the team provide a short presentation explaining the walk-through? 4. Written Responses: Did the team provide adequate responses to each of the questions outlined in the "historical research" section? DB6 Copyright 2006 Paxton/Patterson LLC - All Rights Reserved.
