1 Inventor 2014 Paper Airplane Drawing a Plan of a Paper Airplane In this activity, you ll create a 2D layout of a paper airplane. Please follow these directions carefully. When you have a question, reread the directions and try something. If you mess up, use the undo button. You can also ask your partner for advice. While you are waiting for help from the teacher, please continue to try and problem solve. Open a Plan of a Paper Airplane Make sure to choose the Inventor icon with PRO. 1. Double click on Autodesk Inventor. 2. On the Get Started tab, click Open. 3. Navigate to Groups$ Student Work 01TechEd 6 th Grade DK-Inventor And Open File Paper_Airplane.idw Paper Airplane Page 1

2 4. Click the Capital I... Click Save As Name your file LastName FirstName Dart Plane Make sure you have saved your file in your class group folder such as Groups$ Student Work 01TechEd 6a or 6b Inventor Updating the Title Block with your Information 1. From the Browser, click on the + to the left of Paper airplane 2. Double click on Field Text 3. Click on the iproperties icon or click the big I and click iproperties Paper Airplane Page 2

3 4. From the Summary tab, change (Your Name) to your name, and change (Some Name Middle School) to Moore Middle School. 5. From the Project tab, change Creation Date: to today s date. 6. From the Custom tab, click on (Your Period #). 7. Change Value: (Your Period #) to your period #. Paper Airplane Page 3

4 8. Click on Modify 9. Click on Apply 10. Click on Close 11. Click on OK Drawing the Paper Airplane Drawing a Rectangle 1. On the Place Views tab, click Create Sketch. This is the ONLY time you should click Create Sketch to start drawing! 2. Click on Rectangle from the Draw toolbar. 3. Click ONCE in the upper left corner of the graphics window (your virtual piece of paper) to start drawing the rectangle. 4. Click ONCE in the lower right corner of the graphics window (your virtual piece of paper) to finish drawing the rectangle. Paper Airplane Page 4

5 Dimension the Rectangle 1. Click on Dimension from the Constrain toolbar. 2. Click on the top horizontal line of the rectangle, and move the displayed dimension upward. 3. Click to place the dimension on your virtual piece of paper just about 1 inch above the rectangle. 4. In the Edit Dimension box, enter 279.4, and then press Enter. 5. Click on the left vertical line of the rectangle, and move the displayed dimension to the left. 6. Click to place the dimension on your virtual piece of paper just about 1 inch left of the rectangle. 7. In the Edit Dimension box, enter 215.9, and then press Enter. The rectangle is now the exact size that it should be. Paper Airplane Page 5

6 Draw Fold 1 1. Click on Line from the Draw toolbar. 2. Click on the Annotate tab. 3. Next to edit layers, click on By Standard, select Fold1 which is located at the bottom of the list. 4. Mouse over the left vertical line of the rectangle until you see a green dot. 5. Click on the green dot. The green dot represents the midpoint of the line. 6. Mouse over the right vertical line of the rectangle until you see a green dot. Paper Airplane Page 6

7 7. Click on the green dot. The green dot represents the midpoint of the line. Fold 1, a dashed line is now created along the center of the paper. Draw Fold 2 1. In the Layers list, select Fold2. 2. To start drawing Fold 2, click on the left endpoint (green dot) of Fold 1, the line you just drew. Make sure that the green dot is displayed like the picture below. Paper Airplane Page 7

8 3. Click on the top horizontal line of the rectangle to set the end point of Fold 2. Make sure a YELLOW DOT is displayed. DO NOT click on the GREEN DOT, or you will get an error message when dimensioning stating: Adding this dimension will over-constrain the sketch. Draw Fold 3 1. On the layers list, select Fold3. 2. To start drawing Fold 3, click on the left endpoint (green dot) of Fold 1. Make sure that the green dot is displayed. 4. Click on the top horizontal line of the rectangle to set the end point of Fold 3. Make sure a yellow dot is displayed. DO NOT click on the green dot at the corner of the rectangle, or you will get an error message when dimensioning stating: Adding this dimension will over-constrain the sketch. Paper Airplane Page 8

9 Draw Fold 4 1. On the layers list, select Fold4. 2. To start drawing Fold 4, click on the left endpoint (green dot) of Fold 1. Make sure that the green dot is displayed. Paper Airplane Page 9

10 3. Click on the right vertical line of the rectangle halfway between the midpoint and top right corner to set the end point of Fold 4. Make sure a yellow dot is displayed. Dimension Fold 2 1. Click the Sketch Tab. 2. Click Dimension from the Constrain toolbar. Paper Airplane Page 10

11 3. Move the cursor to the top left corner of the rectangle you drew at the beginning of the activity. Click on the red dot. 4. Move the cursor to the endpoint of Fold 2 located on the top horizontal line of the rectangle. Click on the red dot. 5. Move the cursor upward to display the dimension. 6. Click to place the dimension between the drawn green line of the rectangle, and the already drawn dimension line of the rectangle. (Do not close this dimension box) Paper Airplane Page 11

12 7. Move the cursor over the dimension you placed on the left vertical line of the rectangle. When the cursor changes to a hand symbol as pictured below, click that dimension. You will see 8. Next enter /2 in the Edit Dimension box, and press Enter. This will take the dimension, and divide it by two which is equal to Dimension Fold 3 1. Click on Fold 1 line (the first dashed line you created). 2. Click on Fold 3 line (the line you just created). 3. Drag your mouse to the center between Fold 1 and Fold 3 to display the dimension, and click to place the dimension. Paper Airplane Page 12

13 4. Enter 90/4 in the Edit Dimension box, and press Enter. You just created an angled dimension by entering the equation 90 divided by 4. The equation is equal to Dimension Fold 4 1. Click on Fold 1 line (the first dashed line you created). 2. Click on Fold 4 line (the line you just created). 3. Drag your mouse to the center between Fold 1 and Fold 4 to display the dimension. 4. To edit the dimension, move the cursor over the 22.5 dimension you just created for Fold 3. When the cursor changes to a hand symbol, click the dimension. Paper Airplane Page 13

14 5. Enter /2 in the Edit Dimension box to divide the Fold 3 dimension by two and press Enter. You just created an angled dimension by entering the equation (Fold 3 Dimension) divided by 2. The equation is equal to Mirror the Fold Lines 1. Click on Mirror from the Pattern toolbar. 2. Click on all 3 diagonal lines. DO NOT click on Fold On the Mirror dialog box, click the arrow next to Mirror line. Paper Airplane Page 14

15 4. Now, click on Fold 1. This is the horizontal line that you want to reflect around. In other words, this is your line of symmetry. 5. Click Apply, and then click Done. Add Text for Fold 1 1. Select Text from the Draw toolbar. 2. On the left side of the paper airplane, just above Fold 1 (the horizontal line), click and drag to create a text box. 3. Enter Fold 1, and then click OK. 4. Press ESC on the keyboard. Paper Airplane Page 15

16 5. Mouse over the Fold 1 text you just created. You should see several green dots surround the text. Right click and select Text Box as shown below. 6. Resize the text box you created by clicking and dragging the sides of the text box if it is too big or small to fit the Fold 1 text. 7. Select Collinear Constraint tool from the Constrain toolbar. 8. Click on the bottom line of the text box and then on Fold 1. The text box aligns with Fold 1. Paper Airplane Page 16

17 Add Text for Fold 2, Fold 3, Fold 4 1. Repeat the previous steps to add text for Fold 2, Fold 3, and Fold 4. As shown below. Paper Airplane Page 17

18 Naming Your Plane 1. Click on Text from the Draw toolbar. 2. Just above Fold 4 on the upper half of the paper airplane towards the right side, click and drag to create a text box. 3. In the text height, enter 10, and then click B and I, for bold and italic. 4. Enter Your First Name, and then click OK. 5. Press ESC on the keyboard. 6. Move your mouse over the text. You should see several green dots surround the text. Right click and select Text Box. 7. Resize the text box you created by clicking and dragging the sides of the text box if it is too big or small to fit the Your First Name. 8. Select Collinear constraint tool from the Constrain toolbar. 9. Click on the bottom line of the text box, and then on Fold 4. The text box aligns with Fold 4. NOTE: If necessary, press ESC, click on the text, and then move it back onto the paper airplane. Paper Airplane Page 18

19 10. Select Text from the Draw toolbar. 11. Just below Fold 4 on the lower half of the paper airplane towards the right side, click and drag to create a text box. 12. In the text height, enter 10, and then click B and I, for bold and italic. 13. Enter Your Last Name. 14. Press ESC on the keyboard. 15. Move your mouse over the text. You should see several green dots surround the text. Right click and select Text Box. 16. Resize the text box you created by clicking and dragging the sides of the text box if it is too big or small to fit the Your Last Name. 17. Click on Collinear constraint tool from the Constrain toolbar. 18. Click on the TOP line of the text box, and then on Fold 4. The text box aligns with Fold Click on Finish Sketch. 20 Checkpoint! STOP - Raise your hand, so your teacher can check your drawing before you print. ********Make sure you save the finished project into your class group folder.********* Paper Airplane Page 20

21 Print Your Airplane 1. Click on Print. Be to select Tech1 or Tech 2 2. Under Scale, select Best fit. 3. Click OK. Cut Out and Fold Your Airplane 1. Using scissors, carefully cut along the perimeter (rectangle) of the airplane outline. Recycle the rest of your paper. 2. Start folding the paper airplane using the fold numbers. After Fold 1, the long center line, you fold along Fold2 and the equivalent fold line on the other half of the paper airplane. Test Flight Your Airplane 1. Now you get to test your dart plane! Do not point or throw planes at your classmates. Summary In this activity, you learned how to create a 2D plan of a paper airplane in Autodesk Inventor You created the design in the drawing environment with the line, constraint, dimension, and text tools.
