Getting Started 1. Recite the I Can Readathon pledge! I pledge to read today and every day so I can stand up and proudly say, I Can Read! Pick an I Can Read! book that you would like to read. Write the title of the book on one of the blank lines in MY READING RECORD LOG on the following pages. When you finish reading the book, place one of the stickers included in this booklet over the I Can Read! circle. Choose a new book and keep on reading! Clark the Shark art by Guy Francis, by HarperCollins Publishers. Permission to reproduce and distribute this page
My Reading Record Log Record your personal best every day! TH Written by veteran New Yorker cartoonist Syd Hoff, Danny and the Dinosaur is selected as an Outstanding Children s Book of the Year by The New York Times. Permission to reproduce and distribute this page
My Reading Record Log Record your personal best every day! TH When Jane O Connor was a small girl, every Sunday, when her grandma and great aunts came to visit, Jane would greet them at the door in a tutu and a pair of her mom s high heels. She thought she looked très glamorous! Years later, while she was fixing dinner one night, the name Fancy Nancy flew into Jane s head, and a star made her debut! Fancy Nancy art by Robin Preiss Glasser. Permission to reproduce and distribute this page
My Reading Record Log Record your personal best every day! TH When James Dean first saw Pete, he was a tiny black kitten in a shelter. Pete looked like he had been starved and his black fur was a mess. At first, James had no interest in Pete black cats were bad luck, after all! But the scrawny little fellow stuck his paw out of the cage, wanting to play! James took Pete home. And even though James chose to paint Pete the Cat blue (his favorite color), James realizes now that black cats are actually very good luck. Pete the Cat art by James Dean. Permission to reproduce and distribute this page
Teach your child to read! I can read! I can read! are empowering words for a child to shout. For over fifty years, beginning readers have been choosing I Can Read! stories featuring classic children s book characters like Amelia Bedelia, Frog and Toad, Fancy Nancy, Pete the Cat, and more. Here are some tips for parents of beginning readers to get started: Start at the just right place. Pick a book that your child is comfortable reading. Selecting books based on your child s ability and interests helps them strengthen current reading skills and progress smoothly to the harder material. I want to read that one! Books that have recognizable, beloved characters like Little Critter or Pinkalicious make the story experience enjoyable for readers of all ages. Introduce new vocabulary. Children can learn new ways to express themselves by building a strong vocabulary. It is important to try to use new words throughout the day. Fancy Nancy books teach vocabulary in a very fun way. Understanding the story. I Can Read! books are based on real-life experiences that your beginning reader can relate to, such as the first day of school, sharing, good sportsmanship, and trying new things. Develop a reading routine. Busy schedules can be disruptive to daily routines, but finding twenty minutes each day to read together can develop strong reading skills. Whether it s after dinner, during bath time, or just before bedtime, story time can be one of the most enjoyable moments in a day. Splat the Cat art by Rob Scotton. Permission to reproduce and distribute this page
TH Celebrate 60 years of I Can Read! Read these special paper-over-board editions commemorating the 60th anniversary of I Can Read books! Each book features a foil cover, an anniversary burst, and eight pages of bonus material on the history of I Can Read.
