1 carltonware.com news Issue March 2009 Prunus Recently we received an about the some Ginger jars: I own two matching ginger jars which are back stamped in gold, They pattern is similar on both but appear to be hand painted, as the pattern feels raised to the touch: branches in black with a white blossom outlined in dark red on a peachy orange background, rim & base have thin black rim around. They are two different sizes: one larger than the other. There is an embossed number on the smaller jar, which is very hard to read, but my daughter seems to think is 222. I cannot identify them anywhere & have looked for years. The measurements of the small one are as follows: Lid: 2cm deep; Jar: circumference 33cms (13ins); height 9.5cm(3.75ins) The large one: Lid 2.5cm(1in) deep; circumference 40.5cm (16ins); height 12.5cm (5ins) The first picture is the reverse view, and the second is the front. Apologies the back stamps are not as clear: they are gold coloured and quite hard to get a really sharp definition of them. I do hope you can identify them for me. Any ideas please? Kind regards. The back stamp is the Yellow Script which was used by Carlton Ware from 1967 to We suspect that the shape number is in fact 125, which is the shape number used by Carlton Ware for this Ginger Jar. A suffix number would have indicated the size. We believe that the pattern is called Prunus and consists of Spays of Prunus blossom. We have several pictures of this pattern on the web site but on a blue ground. The pattern number for the blue ground is 3193 and we have included a couple of pictures. It is interesting to note that the pattern was introduced in the 1930s by Carlton Ware and the two pieces in blue are from a much earlier period than the two from Sue. You can also see how much more of the design was included in the earlier pieces, for example, the lid of the Ginger Jar also contains the pattern. Presumably in later years, when labour

2 became more expensive, Carlton Ware had to find ways of reducing costs. By minimising the amount of decorating helped decrease time and consequently costs. Above & Below: Prunus on a Peachy-orangey ground

3 Above: Pattern 3193, Prunus on a Blue ground. Temple This lovely Table Lamp with the Temple pattern was recently auctioned by Loves Auctions in Perth. It was described as a Carlton Ware baluster table lamp, decorated with chinoiserie, on a red ground, 16" high overall. The Temple pattern contains an Oriental scene of figures in a temple with large circular doorway; there are usually ornate trees and a golden sun. The pattern was introduced in the 1920s and was made in a large number of ground colours and shapes. Carlton Ware used over two-dozen different pattern numbers for the various colour-ways, from 2481 on a Blue ground to 4214 on a Deep Pink ground. 4 Thanks Thank you for sending these newsletters. I have only a few basic pieces of Carltonware, but I find the designs very interesting and keep copies of the newsletters. My friend found me a piece in a jumble sale - nothing special, but pretty. My mother had a 'lettuce' dish and also an 'apple' jam dish. When I was small there was a spoon to match, but it got broken and thrown out, which is a shame. My mother bought her pieces in the 1930s to use, so they are not in pristine condition. I love the Shubunkin pattern - as I keep a few of these fish in my pond! Sincerely. Margaret (UK) Old Wisteria Hello! I hope you can help. I've just found a Carlton Ware pot in my attic. It's black with pink hanging flowers on it and the bottom has a blue crest (like a crown) with the letter M and 1912 underneath. I've tried to look this up on your website but cannot locate anything similar. Are you able to tell me any more about my pot? Kind regards and many thanks in anticipation. Ashley

Carlton Ware made a number of flowers on black patterns during that period.

5 This pattern is called Old Wisteria and consists of a trailing wisteria design on a matt black ground. It was probably made in the late 1910s, early 1920s. Carlton Ware made a number of flowers on black patterns during that period. The most common one is Peach Blossom which consists of pink and green blossom sprays on a matt black ground. It can in a number of pattern numbers including 2030, 2371, 2436 and 2480.

6 Pipe Stand & Ashtray Cameo Auctioneers recently had a Carlton Ware pipe Stand & Ashtray on auction. The pattern on the stand is called New Storks and consists of two Crane like birds wading in a lake under trees with pendulous hanging foliage.
