5 Discovering Color Materials needed: Red, Yellow, and Blue food coloring Water Eye dropper or turkey baster 6-8 Clear plastic containers or cups Optional White ice cube tray or Styrofoam egg carton This is a fun and easy activity for young learners to help them discover how colors mix to make other colors! To set up the activity, fill 6-8 clear containers about halfway with water. (Or use 3 clear containers and 1 ice cube tray or egg carton, leaving reservoirs empty.)

6 1. Add 2-3 drops of red food coloring to one of the water-filled cups, blue to one, and yellow to one. Leave the water in the other containers clear. 2. Show your child how to use the eye dropper or baster to pull the liquid up into the reservoir and squeeze the bulb to squirt it out. 3. Instruct your child to practice pulling up one color and add it to one reservoir in the ice cube tray/egg carton, or to one of the cups with clear water. Now, have your child choose another color and add it to the same cup. What happens to the color? 4. Give your child time to continue to explore what happens when other colors are mixed. How many colors can you make? Bonus tip: For an extension of this activity, freeze colored water in ice cube trays and pop the cubes out into a bowl. Let kids experiment with adding colored ice cubes to colored water in containers. As the ice melts, what happens?

9 Use crayons or markers to add your colors to the color wheel below. What is your favorite color?

10 Color Poem Write, or have your child write, the name of his or her favorite color at the top of the page. Brainstorm a list of things that are that color and write them in a list. For example: PINK flamingo balloon bubble gum carnation sprinkles

11 Now, add some words to each line to describe them and make the poem more interesting. Illustrate your poem. PINK Tall pink flamingo, Floaty balloon, Sweet, chewy bubble gum, Soft delicate carnation, Cupcake sprinkles

13 Color Scavenger Hunt Print a copy of the sheet on the next page for your child, and attach it to a clipboard. Head outside and see how many things you can find that are each color. Younger kids can make a tally mark on the page in the corresponding grid. Older kids may want to write the name of the items they discover, or have an adult write for them.

15 Eat the Rainbow For snacktime, offer a plate with different colored foods so kids can 'eat the rainbow.' Try these healthy ideas to serve along with some crackers, cheese, or dips like hummus, ranch dressing, honey, or peanut butter: RED: beets, bell pepper, apple, cherries, tomato, strawberries, raspberries, watermelon YELLOW/ORANGE: carrots, sweet potato, pumpkin, apricots, orange, grapefruit, pineapple, cantaloupe, banana, sweet pepper BLUE/PURPLE: blueberries, blackberries, cabbage, black beans, grapes, raisins, plum GREEN: kale, spinach, leafy greens, broccoli, honeydew, peas, kiwi, grapes, cucumber, bell pepper, celery

16 Draw some colorful fruits & vegetables in the basket.
