3 New: Culture - How to make Americans like you! A big part of living in the United States is learning how to speak English, but perhaps more importantly, learning how to navigate the American culture. In order to do this, you will need to study English obviously. However, it is not enough to simply speak English you need to make friends with Americans so you can practice! In 1937 a gentleman named Dale Carnegie published a book titled How To Win Friends And Influence People. The book became an overnight sensation, and to date it is still highly relevant. Dale realized then what is still true now, no matter what you do for work or in your personal life, the biggest challenge you will have will always be dealing with people. This is certainly true when moving to or travelling in a new country. Let s look at some of the principles of this book together to learn how to make friends in the US so that you can practice your English! If you want to practice English, you need to know how to start conversations with Americans. If you follow this advice, you can start conversations with people everywhere you go. 6 Ways to Make People Like You Principal 1 Become Genuinely Interested In Other People The dog is referred to as man s best friend for a very good reason. If you have a dog then you know this to be true. Whenever you leave your dog at home, even if it is only for a very short period of time, when you come back it is bursting with enthusiasm to see you when you walk in the door. You can be having the worst day of your life, but when your dog jumps up and down and wags its tail, it makes you forget about all of your worries and makes you smile. If you can learn how to show this same type of enthusiasm when meeting new people, you are sure to make them like you. Find out what they like to do and what is important to them and that will make them like you instantly! Exercise 1 Become Genuinely Interested In Other People To show that you are interested in other people, ask them what interests them: What are you interested in? What makes you happy? What do you do for fun? 1. Sports 2. Going out 3. Family 4. Cars 5. Food Interests Follow up questions What s your favorite team? Where do you like to go? Tell me about your family. What kind of car do you have? Do you like to cook? 15

4 Let s practice! Make up a conversation between you and someone that you are meeting. Practice asking questions and follow-up questions. You: Friend: You: Friend: You: Friend: Principal 2 Smile! The first thing that receptionists, customer service representatives, and other phone related jobs are taught is to smile when they answer the phone. The smile is so powerful that it will travel over the phone and radiate on the other end. If a smile is that powerful by phone, imagine what it does in person. Look at these pictures. Who do you want to talk to? Exercise 2 Smile! Nonverbal communication can be more powerful than speaking English, but it might be different than what you are thinking. How can you say the following. without saying anything at all? 1. Hi! 2. Yes/No 3. Good/bad 4. I don t know. 5. I like you/flirt 6. I m busy. 7. Come here. 8. Get out of here. 9. The number Check please 16

5 Principal 3 Remember that a person s name is to them the sweetest sound in any language. I hear this all the time I m sorry, I m not good with names. And that tells me one thing this person doesn t have any interest in me at all. Think about it. Do you remember the last time you met a very attractive man or woman? I bet you learned his/her name instantly. Why? Because you were interested in that person. What happens when you are in a crowded place and you hear your name? You instantly look around to see who is saying it. Using people s names makes them feel good and important. Especially if you don t see a person for a while and remember what their name is. When you are meeting people, make a special effort to repeat their names out loud and remember them so that they will feel special. Principal 4 Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves. A quick study of the English language and most commonly used words will give you a lot of information about people and what they like to talk about. Do you know what the #1 most commonly used word in the English language is? The subject pronoun I! This means that people love to talk about themselves. If you can get people talking about themselves, they will love talking to you, and instantly become your friend. We can also think about this backwards. Do you know someone that constantly talks about himself or herself? Do you like being around him or her? Chances are no, you dread being around that person. If you want to really get good at making friends in the US, start asking people questions and show a real interest listening to them! Principal 5 Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely Giving someone a compliment or thanking them for their help is pretty easy to do, and of course it makes them feel good. But if you can make someone feel important, it will make them burst with pride. This is a little more challenging, but will pay off greatly. For example, think about your daily routine at work. If you are a server at a restaurant, most of your customers probably thank you when they get their food and leave you a nice tip. Now imagine one of your customers tells you you know, I really like how friendly you are and your attention to our table is great! Can you tell me your name so I can be sure to ask to sit in your section next time I am here? By the way, the chicken was delicious, please let the chef know how much I enjoyed it! Let s practice! Take a moment to write down a genuine compliment for the people you know: 1. Boss 2. Coworkers 3. Subordinates 4. Spouse 5. Children 17

6 6. Roommates 7. Classmates 8. Teacher 9. Friends 10. Neighbors Are you outgoing or shy? How interested are you in meeting new people? Smile. How do you feel? What do you do when you hear your name? Do you listen more than you talk? Review: Regular Verbs - Affirmative At this point, you should know how to make sentences both affirmative (+) and negative (-), and also make questions (?) with regular verbs. Let s review: Affirmative (+) I eat hamburgers. Negative (-) I don t eat hamburgers. Question (?) Do you eat hamburgers? Let s practice!
