3 FROM THE EDITOR Cindy Neff A collector's mind works differently than most. A case in point is the photo on the cover of this Blue Berry Notes. Phil and I were casually walking through an antique mall in Springfield, Illinois, on our way home from last summer's FBICC convention when I spotted the revolving metal contraption originally used for holding rubber stamps. Did I go down the path of today's interior design gurus and think, "How graphically industrial with clean lines and a strong design style."? Uh - NO. It was more like, "AAAHHHH! LADLE HOLDER!!!" I'm articulate like that. And so, my revolving beauty came home with us and happily props up ladles in many configurations. I have learned that the bowls of sauce ladles need to be down, not up, due to the shorter length of the handles and that the bowls of soup ladles need to be up with the tips of the handles on the table to capitalize on the beauty of the patterns in the ladle bowls. Add my favorite bittersweet vines for fall and a few pine branches for Christmas and a new ironstone-lovers vignette is ready for the spotlight. It was gratifying to find out how many of you are ladlelovers, too, when BBN asked for your photographs. The cascade of gorgeous pictures amazed me and gave me hope that my holy grail of ladles, VIRGINIA by John Maddock, is out there somewhere, too. May you find generous portions of thankfulness, kindness and joy ladled into your life this holiday season. 4 My Two Cents Worth By Ellen G. King Past President and Club Historian When reading the last issue of the Blue Berry Notes, I loved Cindy's comment about the little butter pat found in her Grandmother's things and wished once more that I had inherited something in flow blue from my family. Of course, my FBICC family has been more than generous, so I do have lots of lovely items from them that I cherish. However, for this issue's column I thought I would show you the newest treasures in my collection. This pattern has a family-related reason for my liking it. My grandmother had blue morning glories twining beside her back door and I always loved them. The pattern on these beautiful items is shown on our FBICC website's Pattern Identification Database as "Gaudy Morning Glory," maker unknown (left and bottom of page). I don't know that I would agree with that name as I have seen this same pattern with red designs, in addition to the green, and feel that the red would more deserve the Gaudy pattern name than the green ones I have. This partial set is being added to when I find new pieces. As with most of our collections, the hunt is part of the fun. The teapot (1) came from an Ohio auction. One cup and saucer and (1) the two plates came from antiques shows (2). The second cup and saucer came from ebay (3), thanks to an alert fellow club member who spotted it for me and notified me of its sale. I seem to be drawn to those patterns that are not marked and need to be researched. I am in love all over again with this fresh "new" pattern and determined to find more. Then I will be ready to have a tea party with some warm scones, clotted cream and my own summer-made strawberry jam! There is always something to be looking for and looking forward to, in this field of collecting. Aren't we the lucky ones? For this time, that is my two cents worth. (3) (2) The Pattern Identification Database is available to all members on the FBICC website ( and contains an enormous amount of information in an easy-to-use format. To research the pattern highlighted in Ellen King s article, above, or any other pattern, follow these simple steps: Above is a photo of the actual Pattern ID page on the FBICC website that describes Gaudy Morning Glory. This pattern along with photos and amazing details for approximately 2600 more patterns are waiting for you to discover. Time to search! 1. Click MEMBER LOGIN on the home page 2. Type in the Username and Password (See page one of your FBICC Roster) 3. Click RESOURCES and then PATTERN IDENTIFICATION DATABASE 4. 5 The Rare and Unusual Piece By Warren Macy (See numbered photos on page 7.) Left & below, Warren with R&U cameraman Bob Ferriani Well, our 28 th FBICC annual convention has come and gone, and a fine one it was. You might think that after umpteen R&U programs our members would be running out of R&U items to bring and share. As you can see from the pieces featured in this article, that certainly does not seem to be the case. Susanna Pickle brought and presented a most rare and unusual small polychrome inkwell with brass fittings (1). The gorgeous piece had a pump mechanism that would move ink from a reservoir into the well and pull it back again when one finished writing. Adding to the uniqueness were two small, attached candle or nib holders. Not only was it a hit at the R&U program but it was also one of the top selling items in the auction. The last I saw the piece, it was being packed for a trip to Israel. (For more information on this unusual item, go to page 16 of this issue.) Jan Kobach did not disappoint when she presented her stunning green ground KREMLIN footbath by her potter of choice, Samuel Alcock (2). The gold highlights were amazing. She also brought an Alcock polychrome cup with a most rare and unusual make do metal replacement/repair of its loop handle (3). Not only did Angie Montpas do a fantastic job of organizing our great Thursday outing to the Lincoln home (I think I saw Lincoln s ghost on the stairwell!), museum, and tomb, but she also brought a wonderful polychrome pewter-lidded claret jug with a face at the base of Lincoln s ghost?!? the handle for the R&U program (4). FBICC is an international club and our international members add so much to our conventions. I love visiting with Jackie Casey and learning about her life in England. She always brings wonderful pieces to share and sell. This year she brought a number of them in her carry-on to insure safe arrival, telling 5

6 The Rare and Unusual Piece The award for the largest piece this year went to Ed and Bonnie Jordan for their impressive 40 inch flow blue column or pedestal (6). Unfortunately, it was not at Table Sales. Otherwise, to my wife s chagrin, I would have been tempted to try to cram it in the ol SUV and haul it back to Indiana. So big it had to be brought in on a dolly! the customs agent they were gifts for friends. She brought a singlehandled piece (5) that I would not have been able to identify as to its use had it not been labeled in big black letters on its front Shaving Can. Kim Boyer showed up with ANOTHER LaBelle rose bowl (7). This is only the third one I have ever seen. I have one in my collection. Kim has found the other two. The first one he found I was able to persuade him to sell to me and I moved it on to another LaBelle junkie for a slight profit. Kim is getting smarter. He would not sell this one to me. Charlie Washer did not bring a R&U flow blue lamp this year but rather an even more R&U cookbook (8). It contained at least four score and seven of the Washer family s favorite recipes inside a cover featuring a mouthwatering picture of Charlie s plate at the regions 4, 5 and 6 luncheon hosted by Betty Monteiro. I keep watching for it on the NYT s best seller list. Lookout Bill O Reilly here comes Charlie. Well, fall is here. In an attempt to make the most of it, Sept. 28 th Connie and I took a Sunday drive to Louisville, Kentucky, to take in the semiannual Locust Grove Antique Show with fellow members Bill and Pat Wetherton. It was great weather for this quality outdoor show. There was not a lot of blue but I did manage to pick up six Villeroy and Boch turkey plates at a bargain price. After the show, we headed to a favorite restaurant for lunch where Bill and I enjoyed a specialty of the house, Mom s Sortof-Gourmet Fried Bologna Sandwich thick cut bologna, cheddar cheese, dijonnaise on toasted wheatberry bread served with sweet potato fries and marshmallow dipping sauce. I added a bowl of fruit for health reasons. The owner, a friend of the Wethertons, stopped by the table and I was astonished to learn he has a rare and unusual flow blue collection: service for 50 in PORTMAN by Grindley (see above) with everything including 50 bone dishes and a well and tree! As we walked to the car after that meal, Pat and Connie were right Bill and I were full of bologna. 6

8 Elusive Ladles Ladles are the elusive creatures of ironstone dishes. Made in equal numbers to sauce and soup tureens, many were chipped, broken and discarded through the passage of time. The sturdy tureens are available in most patterns, but the delicate ladles so often evade our grasp. DAGGER BORDER (Minton) NON PAREIL (Burgess & Leigh) CLEOPATRA (F. 9 Elusive Ladles Ladle handles are not all created equal. From a tiny four inch shaft on a sauce ladle to a 12 inch monster on a punch ladle, they have distinctive heft, form and detail. Right & above right, ARGYLE (Grindley) chowder (no pattern in bowl), sauce, soup and punch ladles Left & above left, UNKNOWN soup and sauce ladles with oval bowls and handles curved sharply to the right. Others, like the mulberry sauce ladle in FLORA (Hulme & Booth), top, and the flow blue soup ladle in RHINE GRAPE (Utzshneider & Co.), bottom, have handgrips that appear nearly stick straight. Some ladles, like this polychrome soup or chowder example in NANKIN (Doulton), above & right, have what s technically called, a big, ol swoop in the handle. KEELE (Grindley) three sizes of handles Ladles can be hard to identify. Often only a fraction of the original pattern or border was applied. Above & right, the pattern is CAMBRIDGE by Meakin. Note the medallion only appears on one. 9

10 Ladles - Jager When Marge and Al Jager built a house 32 years ago, it was first things first. The china hutch of their dreams was designed by a nephew who is an architect, and the house, as all homes should be, was built around the hutch. As you can see, it was a great choice. The hutch holds their fabulous collection of flow blue and provides ample space for Marge s passion - ladles. With 30 and counting, you might say she has a soup pot full of them. 13 From the Pattern Identification Database By Helen Swn, Education Chair Have you ever had a flow blue maker speak to you? I suspect that Samuel Alcock often talks with Jan Kobach and Charles Meigh converses with Bonne Hohl. But seriously, (I m not losing it) it is as if certain makers of flow blue yell to me from across an antique mall. Wood and Son is one of those potters. It is strange because I do not collect any of their patterns. Perhaps I connected to this maker because in the early hay day of collecting I could find Wood and Son plates in the Midwest. Checking the database, I found several Wood and Son patterns listed and decided to do some research. The findings are interesting. In 1865, Absalom Wood and his son T. F. Wood, established a pottery under the name of Wood and Son. I often get confused: Is it Wood and "Son" or "Sons?" I soon found the pottery was originally named "Wood & Son" but changed in 1907 to "Wood and Sons." In 1910, the company incorporated and became "Wood and Sons, LTD," finally closing in According to pottery reports, this maker produced a vast array of well-designed, good quality earthenware for the middle market. Most of their wares included tea ware, tableware, and bath ware. It struck me that when entering data into the Pattern ID, I sometimes mix up the patterns of Wood and Son with those of New Wharf Pottery. And well I should. In 1894, Wood and Son acquired New Wharf Pottery. From that date on, the company reissued some of the designs originally created by New Wharf Pottery, including BRUNSWICK, BYZANTINE, CAMBRIDGE, CONWAY, DAVENPORT, KESWICK, MILAN, SA- VOY, SYDNEY and VERONA. These patterns are sometimes identical to the originals, but many are only similar to the originals. The blue color is often darker in the Wood and Son(s) plates than in their predecessors. By all accounts, Wood and Son was an innovative company and produced two of their patterns in color, VERONA MILAN and VERONA, above left-flow blue, above right-with color, which was unusual in late Victorian times. Again, different than other potters of their time, Wood and Sons created mulberry patterns, including SEVILLE, SYD- NEY, FLORENCE, KESWICK, and MILTON. Finally, commemorative china was found among their patterns with current database patterns displaying Blarney Castle, Shakespeare, Martha Washington, and Methodist Church designs, right. Present in the database today are 56 Wood and Son(s) patterns. Kowalsky listed 59 designs in his reference, meaning there are still new patterns for us to discover. There are currently 40 patterns by New Wharf in the database which is a considerable number given its short 16 years of existence. For the most part, the same patterns made by New Wharf and Wood & Son(s) are listed separately, especially when the patterns differ slightly. Note that all of this information, except for the pottery history, was obtained through the use of the FBICC Pattern Identification Database on the club website ( I hope this inspires you to get on board; there is so much to learn. Need help? Call Jim Swan to walk you through using the database. Below are Wood & Son(s) patterns for you to enjoy. 14 Oldroyd By Cindy Neff From time to time, history and collecting collide. Take the case of two comely presentation jugs crafted out of fondness but separated by the passing of time. Found in a British auction room in 2011, the pattern CELESTIAN by John Ridgway, circa 1845, donned the first jug which proclaimed in charming script, "Jane Oldroyd 1848." Who was Jane Oldroyd and what was significant about 1848? The questions came rapidly, but the answers took a little more time. A pleasant investigation revealed that the surname "Oldroyd" developed around Yorkshire in the northern portion of England and came from the Middle English "ald" (old) and "royd" (clearing). Had Jane Oldroyd actually lived in Yorkshire in the beautiful and expansive landscape full of old clearings? It turns out she did. Mark Oldroyd, a weaver, and Elizabeth Sidebottom married on December 25, 1816, in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. A fruitful marriage, Jane was the sixth of ten children born to the couple. Sarah Ann (1817), John (1818), Mary Ann (1821), Elizabeth (1823), Emma (1825), Jane Elizabeth and Joshua (1828), Rachel (1833), James (1836) and Hannah Maria (1841) were all born in Yorkshire. Now the mystery of the inscription on the pitcher deepens. Jane was born in 1828 not Was her 20th birthday celebrated with the gift of a commemorative jug? Jane Elizabeth Oldroyd Sharp Jane Elizabeth Oldroyd grew to a young woman and married Henry Sharp ( ) in 1847 or 1849, depending on the record you view, in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, where her parents had married. Two children, Elizabeth Oldroyd Sharp and Sarah Jane Sharp, joined the family in Yorkshire. In August of 1863, the families of Jane and her sister Rachel, boarded the ship Marco Polo in Liverpool and disembarked in Melbourne, Australia, in November of the same year. While they were the first to emigrate, other family members joined them over the years. In fact, eight of the ten Oldroyd siblings lived, died and were buried in the region of Victoria, Australia. Did Jane leave the special pitcher behind when packing for the journey from England to Australia? Likely she did since it was found in England nearly 150 years later. From the records discovered, the Oldroyd sisters and their husbands prospered in Australia. In fact, Jane and Henry Sharp added to their family John Henry and Hannah Maria (1867) and Mark Henry (1872) during the first 10 years they lived down under. But why the fuss about the pitcher presented to Jane and discovered in England? Because history and collecting were about to collide. ebay seller posted something astounding: a jug in the CE- LESTIAN pattern by John Ridgway with the inscription "Sarah Ann Oldroyd 1848." It was a perfect match. Three years after the pitcher inscribed "Jane Oldroyd 1848" flew from an auction in England to a cozy home in Israel, an unlikely discovery was made. A British Sarah Ann Oldroyd Lyon Is there an answer to why Sarah Ann, who was born in 1817, would be given a pitcher inscribed identically to her sister's, who was born in 1828? Not definitively, so far. Is it possible that several other Oldroyd siblings also received identical jugs marked with their names and 1848? The desire to know is there, but the research leaves us in the dark. It's up to those who collect to uncover the next piece of Oldroyd history. What we do know is that both Jane and Sarah Ann made the arduous journey by ship from England to Australia, and both had to make hard choices about what to take along. Apparently, flow blue pitchers - even costly ones 14

15 Oldroyd with their names inscribed on them - were too delicate for the crossing. 16 Ink Pumps By Dan Sapira (numbered photos on page 17) During the 28th FBICC convention in Springfield, Illinois, an extraordinary ink pump was shown at the Rare & Unusual program by Susanna Pickle and later sold at the auction. It is a very exceptional and scarce flow blue item and, of course, attracted much attention. After the auction ended, the ink pump was with us and we made a promise to write a note about it for BBN. Although they look complicated, the way ink pumps work is relatively simple. Inside the pot there is a weight. Through the weight there is a metal screw-type axis connected to a knob on the lid. The knob on the lid turns to raise and lower the weight which adjusts the ink level in the small dip pot on front of the inkwell. Very simple, isn't it? Arriving home we had to keep the promise to write about this treasure and wanted to include an ink pump we purchased in London in 2010, as well. Now in our part of Israel, the situation is not like it was before, so between alarms, the two other items were located (a difficult task by itself) and pictures were taken so that all of you could see these examples of an inkwell and ink pumps. In picture #1 there are three inkwells that are 2.25, 2.5 and 4 inches tall respectively. The smallest is shown in picture #2. It has the dip pot but no other filling ports. The inkwell is filled through this port and the level of the ink in the dip pot remains constant until the well is nearly empty. The second one is an ink pump. It has a weight which moves up and down by a small, rotating disk. It is missing the knob which is not functional, only ornamental. The interesting thing is the weight-groove which fits over an internal guide to keep the plunger from rotating in the cylinder. This pump is shown in pictures #3 and #4. The third one is the most interesting. In pictures #5 and #6 there are side and top views where we can see the brass parts. There is the turning knob with an inscription on it, ink pot, dip pot with a little chained cover and the nibs pots on the side. The inscription on the brass top is shown in picture #7 and says in French, "*ENCRIER POMPE * BOQUET BREVETTE RUE RICHELIEU 1*," which is translated as, "*INKWELL PUMP * PAT- ENTED RICHELIEU 1," a street name in Paris. It also says, "MEDAILLE D'ARGENT 1859," which translates as, "SILVER MEDAL 1859," perhaps from the 1859 Paris Universal Exhibition. The disassembled ink pump and all its parts are shown in the last picture, #8. The flavor of FBICC conventions resides in this small article. There's always something atypical or uncommon to observe and there's always something intriguing to learn. 19 2014 Region One Meeting By Agnes Holst The 2014 Region One meeting was held October at the Holiday Inn in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. Club members came from Ontario, Canada, as well as Virginia, Michigan, Wisconsin and many states in Region One, braving delays caused by road construction and traffic accidents. After registration on Friday, a group of 30 met at the Shady Maple Smorgasbord for a wonderful dinner, which offered a selection of Pennsylvania Dutch choices in addition to more common fare. Our after-dinner speaker was Lee Woolf, right, who is an avid toy train collector. While wearing his railroad cap, Lee gave a very informative speech about the history of Lionel and American Flyer trains, interspersing it with realistic toots on his train whistle to the enjoyment of everyone. To finish off the evening, we were all invited to the home of Bob & Bonne Hohl, left, for wine, cheese and camaraderie in a flow blue-filled atmosphere. Saturday morning began with Table Sales with five members participating as sellers, below. Following Table Sales, a knowledgeable speech about Parian Ware, a type of bisque porcelain, was given by Barbara Kamerance, left. Everyone enjoyed Show and Tell, with special pieces presented by several members of the club. A cute Flow Blue Quiz had the attendees entertained, as well. Show & Tell above left, Marilyn Shaver above, Irene Beer left, Barbara Kamerance This was the second year the regional meeting had an auction of items donated by members to benefit FBICEF. Bob Hohl presided as auctioneer and was very persuasive in encouraging people to bid higher and higher. As a result, $277 was raised for the Flow Blue International Collectors' Educational Fund (FBICEF) through the auction. The total raised during the weekend when counting book sales and donations was $614! After another session of Table Sales, a buffet lunch was enjoyed by all. Then it was time to either head for home through the autumn leaves or take advantage of the abundant antiquing in the area. 19

24 ***Blue Plate Special*** Just in time for holiday shopping, FBICC opened a three-month enrollment window for FIRST TIME members. From October 1st through December 31st, 2014, FIRST TIME members may join FBICC for the low, low price of $25 and enjoy a Blue Plate Special membership for all of Now is the perfect time to give family and friends an FBICC membership for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays or any other gift-giving opportunity. This offer closes soon, so give a Blue Plate Special today. (For more information turn to the Club Bulletin Board on page 22) Blue Plate Special Progress Maintaining and building FBICC membership constantly challenges the Board of Directors. While several programs and ideas have been enacted over the past few years, none have been as successful as the Blue Plate Special. At the end of October this special offer to first time members had been in Blue Berry Notes, on the FBICC website and posted on the Flow Blue Followers Facebook group (a grassroots group not directed by the club) for one month. In that month, FBICC received 11 Blue Plate Special memberships, three returning memberships and one regular new membership for a total of 15 additional memberships. In October of 2013, FBICC received five new memberships and three returning memberships for a total of 8 additional memberships. The numbers are impressive and still climbing. If you have an idea related to maintaining and building membership, please contact one of the Board members listed on page two. They are eager to listen and devise new ways to develop FBICC. 24
