DRESS-A-DOLL Charles James evening gowns are beautiful constructions. Many of his sumptuous gowns had simple names such as Butterfly and Clover, but they were architectural wonders.

2 DRESS-A-DOLL Charles James evening gowns are beautiful constructions. Many of his sumptuous gowns had simple names such as Butterfly and Clover, but they were architectural wonders. The silhouette is classic: cinched waists with full skirts that used yards of fabric and lace. But James also took inspiration from artists such as Georgia O Keefe, and echoed the artist s flower motifs in one of his gowns. His heyday was in the 1940 and 1950s, and his roster of clients included Babe Paley, Marlene Dietrich and Gypsy Rose Lee. James never achieved the household-name status of a Christian Dior or Chanel, but he was revered by insiders and his peers for raising fashion design to an art form. Several exhibits of James work across the country, most recently at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, have introduced his elegant designs to a new generation. Our model Cornelia is going to a round of gala events celebrating the designs of Charles James. She wants to wear something inspired by his work, and so she is doing research on line. She s poring over the Met Museum s web site, which has many photographs of his gowns. Will she wear a line-for-line copy, or her own artful and daring construction that is homage to the master? That is for you to decide. Instructions for Dress-a-Doll (Please read carefully) DO NOT USE THE MINIATURE CORNELIA DOLL ON THIS PAGE: --Entries will NOT be returned; they will be placed in a book to be awarded in a drawing of names of ONLY those who submit costumes (one name per person regardless of numbers of costumes the person sends). People NOT able to attend may also send costumes and are eligible to win the book. --Entries will be numbered as received, and luncheon attendees will vote for their favorite costume. The artist who sent in the winning costume will receive a gift. --Costumes for the doll are to be your own work, preferably in color, cut or uncut. 4 Paper Doll Luncheon Information 2015 The fee for attending the luncheon will be $35 for electronic delivery and $40 for regular mail. The room rate will $83 + tax for luncheon attendees who are staying over on Friday March 27, 2015 (including Saturday). Please mention the paper doll luncheon when making a reservation. The luncheon will be held at the Morgantown Holiday Inn in Pennsylvania, with a sit-down meal at noon. If you will be accompanied by someone who will help you set-up your sales table but who won t be eating with us, it s unnecessary to pay for that person. Your online reservation or paper forms including payment must be received by Friday, March 20, 2015 (No refunds after March 20) You may pay via PayPal by registering On-line or send a check to: Sheryl Jaeger Sales Tables: We need to know if you need a whole table or if a half-table is sufficient. If we have lots of people who wish to sell, some may have to be refused, so it will be first-come, first-served, but no more than one table per person/family. We would like everyone who wishes to sell items to have space, but this may not always be possible. There is no extra charge for table space. Raffle items: If you would like to donate an item to the raffle table, let Linda know in advance so she can prepare tags and information for the raffle table display. Freebie table: Over the years the freebie table has featured cut and uncut paper dolls, doll magazines, copies of original paper doll art and even vintage coloring books. Let Linda know when you arrive if you have something for the freebie table. Dress-A-Doll (Please Read Carefully): Jayne Keller has graciously agreed to coordinate this effort once again this year. Jayne, as usual, has done a fantastic job creating the doll and costume. We re including the instructions again, just in case you cut out the doll & accidently throw them away.
