2 What s Inside Workshop? Addresses: Helps children improve their tactile awareness by recognizing the properties of an object through active touch and manipulation without the benefit of using his/her vision. The properties to be discriminated include size, shape, weight, texture, hardness, and spatial orientation. Tactile perception is thought to make important contributions to body scheme and praxis. In order to achieve full awareness of the object, the child will need to perform a variety of hand movements with varying force. This will also provide opportunity for the promotion of in-hand manipulation skills. Ages: School Age Number of Players: A child can play individually or 2-4 children can play simultaneously. Preparation & Materials Needed: 1. Bag: Print the workshop Cover Sheet. Adhere this to bag; a brown lunch style bag works well. The bag cannot be transparent; the objects inside need to be concealed. 2. Game Cards: Print the Workshop Description Game Cards. These may be printed onto card stock or laminated. Cut into individual cards. 3. Items in Workshop: Place the objects that are Inside Workshop inside the bag. You will need to supply the following: Pencil (write list) Key (opens the door) Directions to Play: Paper clip (holds papers) Piece of ribbon (tie up presents) Mini candy cane (elves eat it) Small wooden block (toy elves make) Bow (on top of presents) Puzzle piece (part of a puzzle) Cotton ball (part of beard) Crayon (decorate the toys) Bolt (Holds toys together) Button (from suit) The Workshop Game Cards are turned over in a pile. The child picks a card and reads the description. An adult can help the child read as needed. The child is expected to reach inside the bag with their hand to find the specified item described on the Game Card. He/she is expected to use only their hand and fingers to locate the object on the game card. No peeking! Continue this process with each child. Take turns until the bag is empty. Variations: Help the child/children recognize what he/she may be touching by displaying all or many of the Game cards. Modify the number of items within the bag based upon the skill level of the child/children. Simplify the game by including fewer objects in the bag. Place just a few items in the bag. Without the benefit of the Game Cards, the children can verbalize what he/she thinks is inside Workshop. Place just a few items in the bag.
