2 To the Student In FOCUS on Building Number Sense, Book C, you will read problems and answer questions. You will practice using a math strategy. It is called Building Number Sense. You will learn about the strategy on the Learn About pages. You will see a sample passage, sample questions, and sample answer choices on the Lesson Preview pages. Then you will practice using the strategy. Each lesson has a passage and five questions. After you finish reading the passage, answer the five questions. For the first four questions, fill in the correct answers right on the Answer Form on page 53. Or, you may fill in the correct answers right on the page. For the fifth question, show your work. Then write and explain your answer. Fill in the circle on the Answer Form to show that you have completed the fifth question. Use the Tracking Chart on page 47. Show when you have finished each lesson and the number of questions that you answered correctly. After each group of five lessons, complete a self-assessment. This will let you see how you are doing. 4 Learn About Building Number Sense: Place Value, Even and Odd Numbers, and Writing Numbers Numbers are made up of digits. Each digit in a number has a place value. The value of a digit depends on its place in a number. The chart shows the place values of the digits in the number 3,527. The value of the 5 in this number is 500. thousands (1,000) hundreds (100) tens (10) ones (1) Numbers are either even or odd. Even numbers have the digits 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 in the ones place. Odd numbers have the digits 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 in the ones place. The number 3,527 is odd because it has a 7 in the ones place. The number 3,527 has 3 thousands, 5 hundreds, 2 tens, and 7 ones. Numbers can be written in different ways. Standard form: 3,527 Word form: three thousand, five hundred twenty-seven Expanded form: 3, Jenny has 276 pennies in her piggy bank. What is the value of the 7 in the number 276? The 7 is in the tens place. Seven tens is 70. The value of the 7 in 276 is 70. Remember: Each digit in a number has a place value. The value of a digit depends on its place in a number. Numbers are either even or odd. Even numbers have the digits 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 in the ones place. Odd numbers have the digits 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 in the ones place. Numbers can be written in standard form, in word form, or in expanded form. 2

5 Learn About Building Number Sense: Counting and Ordinal Numbers Listing numbers in order from least to greatest is called counting. Counting can help you find what number comes just before or just after another number. The counting list below shows that the number 9 comes just before 10 and just after 8. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 Ordinal numbers are used to tell the place in order of something in a list or a row. The ordinal numbers are first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and so on. The red circle is the fourth circle in this row. start The table below displays the numbers and words for the numbers 1 through one first 2 two second 3 three third 4 four fourth 5 five fifth 6 six sixth 7 seven seventh 8 eight eighth 9 nine ninth 10 ten tenth Marlisa drew a row of shapes on her paper. In what place is the triangle? start The square is first, the circle is second, the rectangle is third, the diamond is fourth, and the triangle is fifth. The triangle is the fifth shape in the row. Remember: Listing numbers in order from least to greatest is called counting. Counting can help you find what number comes just before or just after another number.
