One The Weather Game ( 1) - Lesson Collection Set #3
Two The Weather Game ( 2) - Lesson Collection Set #3
Three The Weather Game ( 3) - Lesson Collection Set #3
Teachers Instructions (1/2) The Weather Game (your city)? Students: It will be. Getting Started: Put the students into groups of four. Give each group one set of Weather Cards give them a few minutes to look at all of the cards. 1. Student ability: High Beginner ~ Intermediate 2. Approximate length of lesson: Number of students necessary: Preferred age/maturity: JHS, HS, College, Adult 5. Type of lesson: Pair Work Activity * * * * * Language Target: Talking about the weather (sunny / rainy / cloudy / snowy / windy / stormy / partly cloudy) while practicing past, present and future tenses. Prior to Class: Prepare one set of Weather Cards for each group of 4 students. It s best to enlarge the cards (either with a printer or with a copy machine). It is also nice (but very time consuming) to color the cards (and/ or print on colored paper) and laminate each card. This only needs to be done once, then the cards can be used over and over for years. Setting Up: In front of the class, look out the window and say: Teacher: How is the weather in (your city) today? Students: It s sunny (rainy / cloudy / snowy / windy / stormy / partly cloudy). Teacher: How was the weather in (your city) yesterday? Students: It was.... Teacher: What is tomorrow s forecast for There are four cities (London, Sydney, Paris and New York). At the top of the regular cards is one word: Yesterday, Today or Yesterday. When a student plays a card, the elements of the card must be included into a short dialogue. For example, if the card shows partly cloudy, London and it says Today, the appropriate question will be: Student A: How is the weather in London today? Student B: It is partly cloudy in London today. Explain the rules of the game. (This game is based on the popular game Uno.) 1. Deal five cards to each student and place the remaining cards face down on the table. 2. One student begins by placing a single card face up on the table. The same student then asks an appropriate question about the card. For example, if the card shows a rainy Sydney. At the top it says Yesterday. The appropriate question would be: How was the weather in Sydney yesterday? 3. Going clockwise around the group, the second student checks to see if he/she has either a Sydney card (with any weather condition) or a stormy card (with any city) in hand. If so, the second student answers the question: It was rainy in Sydney yesterday. Then the student plays the matching card on top. The Weather Game [Lesson Collection Set #3 Lesson 17]
α Teachers Instructions (2/2) (This is exactly the same as Uno except that in Uno, numbers match numbers and colors match colors. In this game, cities match cities and weather conditions match weather conditions.) 4. If the second student does not have a matching card, he/she must say pass and pick up a card from the pile of cards in the middle of the table. 5. The next student must then play either a matching card (Sydney or stormy) or say pass. If a matching card can be played, for example a rainy New York, this card is played and the player asks a new question. What is the weather forecast for New York tomorrow? 6. The next student must play either a rainy card, a New York card or pass. 7. Special Cards Wild Cards Wild cards can be played only when a player does not have a matching weather or matching weather card. When a student plays a Wild Card, he/she must say the name of one of the cities. The next player must then play a card with that city or pass. 8. Special Cards Skip Cards There are four different Skip Cards one for each city. If a Skip Card is played, the next player will miss a turn, i.e., he/she is skipped over, like leapfrog. 9. The winner is the first student to play all of his/her cards. Variation: In pairs, divide one deck of cards between the two students. Remove the Wild and Skip Cards. One student plays a card and asks the appropriate question. The other student answers the question then plays a weather-matching or citymatching card. After playing, he/she ask an appropriate question. They continue until one of them can t play a matching card or until all of the cards have been used.
