For full access to these free utilities, visit The Quantile Framework for Mathematics, developed by educational measurement and research organization MetaMetrics, comprises more than 500 skills and concepts (called QTaxons) taught from kindergarten through high school. The Quantile Framework depicts the developmental nature of mathematics and the connections between mathematics content across the strands. By matching a student s Quantile measure with the Quantile measure of a mathematical skill or concept, you can determine if the student is ready to learn that skill, needs to learn supporting concepts first, or has already learned it. 2 Unit 2 Lesson 1 Student Expectation: Students will use manipulatives to create tables of shapes Reteach Generate Tables of Real-Life Situations Shapely Tables K C Teacher note: Students having trouble creating tables might find it difficult to see where the numbers come from in the tables. In this Reteach activity, students will use manipulatives to create tables with the pictures relating 5 common shapes with the number of sides for each shape. Group size: pairs Materials: directions and example, transparency page 32; shapes, pages 33-37; large pieces of butcher paper; markers; rulers; scissors; glue sticks; answer key, pages Before class: Copy the shapes, pages 33-37, on colored paper for each pair, so each pair can have a set of manipulatives. There is no need to cut them. Students will be directed to do that during the activity. Gather other materials. Directions: Place transparency page 32 on the overhead with the directions and example for this activity. Distribute materials to each pair, and go over the directions and example. Allow students to start creating tables. Circulate among the pairs as they work. 1. Listen to see if the students can explain what each column of the table represents. 2. Evaluate whether the students are able to generate the data for a table. 3. Make sure the students are able to generate the paired numbers relating the number of shapes to the number of sides. 4. Look to see if the students are placing the data in the correct columns and rows. 5. Headings are important. Did the students use the headings correctly? Gourmet Curriculum Press, Inc. 31

3 Unit 2 Lesson 1 Student Expectation: Students will use manipulatives to create tables of shapes Reteach Directions and Example Generate Tables of Real-Life Situations Shapely Tables You are going to create 5 tables relating the numbers of a specific shape and the number of total sides on those shapes. The first table will look like the one started here: Number of Triangles 1 2 Cut out the triangles, and glue them on the table. Number of Sides 3 6 Count the sides to determine the number that should be placed in column 2. There are enough shapes to create a table for each shape that will show from 1 to 6 of that shape. Under each table, explain what patterns you see in the table. For example, 2 triangles have 3 sides more than 1 triangle. Complete these steps for each shape until all 5 tables are created. 32 ( T ) Gourmet Curriculum Press, Inc.
