TOURS DESCRIPTION RAINFOREST MYSTERIES TOUR We have a saying here at the farm: we share the day with our forest friends, but at night the trails belong to Mother Nature. Except, that is, for the Rainforest Mysteries Trail, a mile trail we laid out in the secondary rainforest near our main lodge. Accompanied by an expert guide, our guests will walk this trail and experience the sights and sounds of the rainforest at night.
You may see kinkajous, sleeping birds, translucent glass frogs, red-eyed tree frogs, or perhaps lizards or snakes. You never know the creatures come out on their schedule, guided perhaps by the phases of the moon and whether it has just rained. We assure you of this, however: you will feel the rainforest at night, and that is a direct contact with one of the great mysteries on this planet. Departure from Reception at 7 PM Duration: 2 hours Recommended ages: All ages Rate: $35 per person What to bring: Quick dry clothing or poncho, socks, bugspray, camera. Includes: Entrance fee, rubber boots, head lamp and professional bilingual guides. Discounts: 20% off for students and residents.
CHOCOL ATE TOUR All our guests will, on their farm tour, visit our cacao (or in English, cocoa ) plantation and see our more than 300 cacao trees, most more than 30 years old. After seeing how we use regenerative practices to grow the trees, the next step is to learn how chocolate has been made, both by ancient civilizations and by modern techniques. We ll take you on a thousand-year chocolate journey, and you ll make both the ancient Drink of the Gods and modern chocolate confections. You will first roast and then grind fermented cacao beans. For the grinding you will use an ancient metate or grinding stone, thought to be almost a thousand years old and carved by indigenous people from volcanic rock. Once the task of grinding is completed, you will add the desired spices and flavors to your drink, selecting from New World ingredients such as Vanilla, Jamaica or Allspice, Spicy Chile, and Achiote or Annatto. You can also opt for a more modern hot chocolate experience, using milk and sugar as first introduced in Europe. Drinking this chocolate with different flavors will be a unique opportunity to appreciate and value the spiritual and mystical healing power of chocolate.
Once you ve experienced the Drink of the Gods, you will participate in one of the most celebrated uses of cacao the process of making chocolate. We have professional equipment to make organic chocolates using spices and other ingredients from our own farm. Let your imagination run wild! The time required for this activity is three hours. The tour is at Cafe Luna in Casa Luna, next to reception The tours are scheduled by reception, upon request Duration: 3 hours Recommended ages: yrs old. You re never too old for chocolate! Rate: $35 per person What to bring: Your love of chocolate, your imagination, and your camera Minimum: 2 people. Discounts: 20% off for students and residents
FARM TOUR T A K E A T O U R O F T H E F U T U R E O F F O O D P R O D U C T I O N We offer every hotel guest a complimentary guided tour of our farm, and for many people it s a highlight of their trip to Costa Rica. We are probably not like any other farm you ve ever visited or even imagined. We are dedicated, on every meter of land, to producing the healthiest food for our guests while at the same time regenerating topsoil and biological diversity. We are a leading exponent of the regenerative agriculture revolution, and taking our farm tour will introduce you to this beyond organic celebration of holistic food production.
You will not only see but taste, from season to season, many of the foods and spices we grow at Luna Nueva. If you re open to taste-bud challenges, we can offer you a living experience of Thai food, nibbling on galangal and kafir lime, or you can sample the foundational spices of Indian cuisine such as ginger, turmeric, holy basil, cardamom, and black pepper. We have planted over 90 species of tropical fruit trees, and every day offers up different exotic fruits to sample on the tour. We have many foods historically used for medicine or cosmetics, and we invite our guests to be experimental.
Who knows? The lipstick tree might be fruiting and you can paint your face bright red. Or the bilimbi tree might be producing hundreds of green fruits that look and taste like sour pickles. On the farm tour that sour fruit is growing next to the Miracle Fruit, and sometimes we can chew on the fruits of the Miracle Fruit and turn sour tastes into sweet delights. And almost every day you can eat raw cacao fruits directly off the trees. You ll be amazed how chocolate begins its journey. Departure from Reception: 9:00 am Duration: 2 hours Recommended for all ages Regular Rate: $35 per person, complimentary for hotel guests What to bring: Quick dry clothing or poncho, sun block, mosquito repellent. Discounts: 20% off for students and residents.
SACRED SEEDS TOUR The Sacred Seeds Sanctuary at Luna Nueva is a dynamic collection of medicinal plants that protects and celebrates not only biological diversity in Costa Rica and the tropics, but also the diversity of cultural knowledge related to these plants worldwide. Our Sacred Seeds garden currently houses over 300 tropical medicinal plants. In a world where 50 to 200 species become extinct every day due to deforestation, over harvesting, or other human activity, the sanctuary aims to preserve the genetic material and cultural use of these plants.the winding path of the sanctuary brings the visitor through three different sections of environmental diversity representing the various cultural groups of Costa Rica; indigenous, Afro-Caribbean, and European descended Ticos. We offer a guided tour of the Sacred Seeds Sanctuary.
Departure at Luna: Upon request Duration: 2 hours Recommended ages: All ages Rate: $35 per person What to bring: Quick dry clothing or poncho, sun block, bugspray, camera. Includes: Entrance fee, rubber boots, and professional bilingual guides. Discounts: 20% off for students and residents. CABALONGA TRAIL TOUR Allow our experienced guides to uncover the mysteries of the rainforest on this beautiful hike. While this hike is more rigorous than our rainforest mysteries trail, the paths are well groomed so you can relax and admire the surroundings.
This trail is well marked and can also be explored by adventurous guests on their own, recognizing that such guests will assume responsibility for their safety. We ask that guests notify the reception desk before going out on the Cabalonga Trail.
We provide rubber boots in many sizes that are free to use and recommended on this trail as it is often muddy. We encourage you to bring your camera as there are plenty of opportunities to take photos. Departure from Reception: Schedule your guide in advance Duration: 1-2 hours Recommended ages: 7 and above, good physical condition. Rate: $25 per person with a guide, $5 trail use fee without a guide. What to bring: Quick dry clothing or poncho, socks, sun block, bug spray, camera. Discounts: 20% off for students and residents TROPIC AL BIRDING TOUR A Birder s Costa Rica Paradise
Luna Nueva is an excellent location for birding, whether you are an experienced birder looking for species to add to your life list, or a nature lover who wants to enjoy magnificent toucans, jeweled hummingbirds, and colorful tanagers from the lodge balconies or our canopy tower. The lodge is located on the Caribbean slope, at 1080 to 1150 feet elevation. It includes a primary rainforest of 126 acres, and 82 acres of secondary forest, fields and gardens, and features trails to explore and bird on your own or with a professional guide. More than 450 species have been recorded within the Arenal area, and over 250 birds have been recorded on our private reserve alone. View a pdf of Luna Nueva s own bird list, luna-nueva-bird-checklist-2016, and read the review of birding at our lodge by the renowned Costa Rican birder Patrick O Donnell, arenal-costa-rica-christmas-count.htm
Birders and nature lovers will enjoy: A 50-foot high canopy tower, where you can easily observe and photograph colorful toucans, euphonias, honeycreepers, and hundreds more. Maintained trails that cross secondary forest, primary forest, open areas and gallery forests. A Luna Nueva bird list developed by Juan Diego Vargas & Mirna Salas, both professional birding guides, that describes where you can find species of interest on the reserve. Native flowering plants that attract 20 different hummingbird species, including the famous black-crested Coquette.
Proximity to the Children s Eternal Rainforest; San Ramon Cloud Forest; Arenal Lake, and other excellent birdwatching locations (see our birdwatching tours page for more information). As part of our commitment to rainforest restoration, we have planted a wildlife corridor along the Chachagua River that is linked to the Children s Eternal Rainforest, just 600 meters away. Schedule your guide 24 hours in advance Departure from reception 6 AM Duration: Approximately 2 hours Recommended ages: All ages 4 or more people: $35 per person Fewer than 4 people: $50 per person What to bring: Quick dry clothing or poncho, sun block, bug spray, camera.
