ANNE VICKREY EVANS: A THIRTY YEAR FELT MAKING JOURNEY Program for the January 10, 2014 Guild Meeting Anne s first introduction to felt was as a child visiting her grandparents in Norway where nearly everyone had a pair of felt boots. When a Danish friend was visiting 30 years ago, she taught her how to make a pair of felt slippers. From that point on, felt became a focus for her and she eventually wrote five books on the subject, made two videos in addition to developing a line of feltmaking craft kits for children and adults. Her recent work has been in juried and invitational shows, among them the Surface Design Association Conference Fashion Show 2011; ArtWear Fashion Week 2011 & 2013; Uncommon Threads Art-to-Wear Fashion Show, where she received the Juror s Choice award for Best Body of Work in 2012; International Shibori Conference; and the HGA Convergence Fashion Show Anne and her husband, Don, live in Woodland Park, Colorado and manage the FeltCrafts business that provides feltmakers with tools and machines for feltmaking. 2

PPWG PRESIDENTS NOTES BY ANNE EVANS We are starting the New Year with an exhibit of our members' work at the COPPeR Offices on South Tejon on the north side next door to the Pioneers Museum. Bring your labelled work to our January meeting. If you did not sign up at the December meeting you can still participate. The installation will be the end of January. Reserve the evening of the first Friday in February for the opening! This exhibit gives us another opportunity to be visible to the local community. PROGRAM NOTES By Edna Devai This year again our December Guild meeting coincided with the beloved Swedish St. Lucy holiday and we were treated by our Swedish members to traditional baked goods served on this holiday. Helene Fagerquist was dressed in her native costume she sewed from materials woven by her mother. The skirt was a striped wool cloth gathered at the waist accompanied by a vest with a pieced, overlapping peplum and a white linen blouse. The blouse s collar and cuffs were embroidered as was her linen apron. She wore a figured silk shawl, silk cap trimmed with lace, soft, red leather boots and traditional filigree jewelry. Helene also told us that according to protocol, native costumes are acceptable to wear to court functions. Our potluck meal, as always, was delicious and Sarah Richards put up lovely center pieces and buffet decorations. Before and after the business meeting, there was brisk buying of donated items at the Stash Sale. Please watch for the Treasurer s report for the amount of money realized from this fundraiser. As we are moving into 2014, we are looking forward to our January program with Anne Evans of her Thirty Year Felt Making Journey accompanied by a fashion show. In February Mary Madison will talk about her experience at this past summer s Intermountain Weavers Conference. She was the 2013 PPWG Scholarship recipient. In the afternoon, Bernadette Marquez and Cathy Sterling will teach a hands-on cd weaving mini workshop. Among the things we will learn in the workshop are: warping the cd; techniques for starting, finishing, adding new colors; various weaving techniques, including weaving with an odd and even number of warp yarns, weaving spirals, tapestry, and other techniques. Please see registration form for the mini workshop in this Newsletter. I am wishing you all a Happy New Year and plenty of good weaving in 2014! 3

Weaving Sample by Emily Jones The topic for the Color and Design study group was to pick a design from the book Color and Texture in Weaving 150 Contemporary Designs by Margo Selby. My design was Extra-Weft Blocks pages Extra weft is a construction that allows one yarn to weave the base cloth, while a second yarn weaves a weftfaced construction on the surface, creating contrast in color and texture in the fabric. In this collection, block threading has been used, with each block threaded on four shafts which allows the two blocks to weave different constructions to reveal and conceal the extra weft. My sample consisted of Tile, Strip, Dash, Graduation, Mosaic and Ray. For the weft, I choose a 20/2 mercerized cotton, color mahogany and a 16/2 mercerized cotton, color ash, to create a solid and durable ground fabric. The extra weft yarns chosen were fancier and more decorative for added interest such as a polyester thread, rayon cotton, 5/2 cotton, metallic yarns, and fancy glitter yarns. At the end of my sampler, I had about a yard left on my loom. I wanted to weave something that would be useful and not have the long weft floats. I changed the tie-up to a twill with only 3 weft float ends. Threading: block threading with one block threaded on shafts 1-4, and the second block threaded on shafts 5-8 Tie-up: twill using 8 shafts Warp: 20/2 mercerized cotton, mahogany and 16/2 mercerized cotton, ash Weft: 5/2 cotton, denim Sett: 30 epi: 3 end/dent in a 10 dent reed Result: 2 hand towels, 14.5 width x 23.5 width Finishing: machine washed hot/cool, dried, and pressed Source: Color and Texture in Weaving 150 Contemporary Designs by Margo Selby, First edition, 2011 by Interweave Press, LLC, pages

Step Into 2014 With Radiant Orchid: Pantone's Color of the Year by Jane Rock Costanza A new year brings new color trends with the hottest one being "Radiant Orchid," the 13th annual Color of the Year, named by Pantone since they began the series in Love it or not, it is having a major impact on designers world wide. One only has to run a search on images.google.com, or simply type in "radiant orchid" on etsy.com to see your screen flooded with items drenched in this color. Orchid is one of the warmer versions of its parent color: purple. It brings to mind less regal connotations than purple, becoming more feminine (think bride's maid dresses) and tropical (think sarongs and bali-prints). One of the immediate questions for weavers, spinners, and dyers is, "How are we going to work with this?" Let's start by going back to basic color theory. One can't go wrong using lighter or darker tints, tones, shades and combining with a neutral of either black, white, cream, or taupe. For tints the original hue is lightened by adding white; for tones the complementary color is added to grey things down and mellow the color; and for shades, black is added to deepen/darken. Monochromatic schemes, even in vibrant colors can have a soothing and elegant effect. Monochromatic Color Scheme A complementary combination will add some vibrance. Since orchid is a more red-violet color its complementary would be a greenish-yellow. The first scheme below began with a medium intensity green-yellow then put through the paces of tint, shade, tones but can be punched up by moving more toward the yellow rather than the green. The choice of more green rather than more yellow suggests the foliage of an orchid. Using more yellow to key it up could suggest a tropical sunshine setting. These types of choices and decisions are one of the many ways several designers can use the same pattern yet wind up with completely different looking items. Remember that a commercial color wheel is a jumping off point for using the basics of color theory. It is up to each designer to tweak and fine tune within the hues, tints, shades, and tones and her/his own aesthetic preferences. (Continued on next page) 7

Complementary Color Scheme (leaning more to the green in green-yellow) Complementary Color Scheme (leaning more to the yellow in green-yellow) Analogous color schemes are excellent for giving the illusion that more colors are being used than really are. It's often within analogous combinations that luminescence can be discovered. Analogous Color Scheme Again, keep in mind the wide range available when using tints, tones, and shades of the colors that make up the original scheme. In this case a tint and a tone of a red hue were used and two shades (a 33% black and a 66% black) of a violet were used. While this author uses a lifetime of colorwork in oils, watercolor, acrylics, inks, and dyes, so much of this as is the case for many designers is second nature. That being said, as the Web Chair for PPWG, it would be remiss if this article did not contain some great web resources to assist in the use of this often difficult to use color. An excellent place to begin playing with the color is by using Adobe Kuler at Simply plug in the following: RGB or the hex code B163A3. These are the numbers provided by Pantone for the fashion industry. For Photoshop users, once you plug in the above code(s) into your color picker, you can easily jump over to the CMYK to add in black (K) at various percentages as well as using the color sliders to play with tints and tones. Looking for inspiration? Simply go to and type "radiant orchid" into the search box. Thousands of images will appear. One of my favorite inspiration gathering websites is also Many users don't realize that it's not necessary to type in specific items. By typing in a color, in this case "radiant orchid," hundreds of items pop up and the fun begins. (Continued on next page) 8

Remember that onscreen colors vary from monitor to monitor, thus the importance of knowing the Pantone name and number for the Color of the Year: Radiant Orchid , and the various RGB, CMYK, and the hex code put out by Pantone at: Have fun, punch the color up, tone it down, lighten it, darken it, spin it, weave it, dye it. Wouldn't it be lovely to have a 2014 Color of the Year PPWG challenge? Pikes Peak Weavers Guild Regular Meeting Minutes December 13, 2013 for Bev Weaver by Cathy Sterling President Anne Vickrey Evans called the meeting to order at 9:40 am. Ellen Alderson moved to approve the November meeting minutes as they appeared in the December newsletter. The motion was seconded by Sandra Hutton and passed without opposition. Susan Bowman brought up Kudos for Beverly Weaver who has an article entitled Hit and Miss runner with Sari Strips in the Jan/Feb issue of Handwoven. Sandra Hutton and Susan Du Bois also have an article entitled Handpainted Shawls in Silk Noil. Additional articles also appear from other CO weavers. Officer and Committee Reports: President: Anne mentioned we need a publicity chairperson. Vice President: Edna Devai reported the January program is Anne Evans who will share her felting journey as well as present a fashion show of her creations. Recording Secretary: Beverly Weaver was unable to attend today due to illness. Cathy filled in as minutes recorder. Treasurer: Sandra Hutton gave her treasurer s report. Membership: Barb Byerly reported everyone is paid up. She introduced Susan Gillaland, our newest member. Standing Committee Reports: Demonstrations: Peggy Doney reported a marvelous time at the Pioneer s Museum. She said numbers picked up throughout the day and everyone was kept very busy. There were two types of weaving meat tray and cd both quite popular. Edna spun on a drop spindle and Peggy spun on her spinning wheel. Museum officials reported over 1700 people. She said Shea (from the museum) said ours was one of the best booths! : ) Peggy also reported she needs a replacement to oversee and be in charge for the June demonstration at Rock Ledge Ranch. Please get in touch with her if you are interested. Hospitality: Anne thanked Judy and Helene for the wonderful snacks today. Library: Linda Shaffer was sick. Emily Jones said she has two items for the raffle. Yearbook: Susan Bowman reported in reading the by-laws again, the Yearbook (directory) is supposed to be given out at the September meeting so it should be worked on in July in order to be ready to pass out in Sept. New Business: COPPer Exhibit: Anne reported a PPWG exhibit will be held at the COPPeR offices in February. The exhibit will need to be set up the end of January. We need at least two people to help with setting up the exhibition. Word is it will be very busy on Art Walk Night. Two tables will be set up that night but the exhibit hung on the walls will stay up 2-3 months. Forms are available to be attached to each piece you plan to display. Bring your items to January s meeting. Items will be for sale, unless you don t want yours to be. Scarves and shawls are welcome. There is some shelf space about 4 wide. The items for the table display will only be for Art Walk Night. Discussion continued about the need to hang a banner identifying PPWG as the exhibitors. A question was asked about how old items could be for the exhibit. The recommendation was probably no older than about 3 years. Details are still being worked out on hanging the pieces. Feel free to call Dottie Weir with questions. (Continued on the next page) 9

Announcements: Sandra Hutton announced the guild was given a Schacht table loom from someone who didn t want it anymore and contacted the guild through the website. Sandy also made a bag for the newly acquired 8 shaft table loom for all the tools that came with it. She was especially concerned about the crank getting lost, so she designed a pocket with Velcro closure inside the bag. She said it can be rented for the Sheila O Hare workshop in Denver. The workshop is in March and anyone can sign up for it. Sheila O Hare developed a tapestry type technique which brings pictures to the front. Edna announced brochures for fiber celebration would be on the show and tell table. The meeting was adjourned at 10:15. Sample Schedule We need volunteers for weaving, dyeing, and spinning samples for the newsletter. Hopefully we will always have a weaving, spinning, and dyeing sample for each newsletter. As you can see there are still some holes left in the signup sheet. If we don't have volunteers, then we won't have samples that month. If you would like to volunteer, please let sample chairperson know. For weaving, we need two (2) samples (6 x 6 minimum, 8 x 10.5 maximum). For spinning we need two (2) samples which need to be butterflies approximately 4 yards long. The two (2) dyeing samples may be on fiber or handwoven cloth. So the size of the sample will depend on the media. The newsletter editor needs digital photos of the sample for the newsletter. Please save the photos in.jpg format and them to (editor@pikespeakweavers.org). If you do not want to take the digital photos yourself, please give or send the samples to the newsletter editor to take the photos. Please contact the newsletter editor to make arrangements for the photos. Your weaving, spinning, and dyeing descriptions need to be given, mailed, or ed to the newsletter editor, at (editor@pikespeakweavers.org). The sample chairperson will print the descriptions from the newsletter for the sample notebooks in the library. If you have other information for the sample notebooks, please give it to the sample chairperson at a meeting. If you have a large or more expensive item you would like me to advertise before Distaff Day, just me and I'll send out the word. Vendors: Tables are free. me ASAP if you would like me to reserve one for you. We have 14 tables so the faster I hear from you, the more certain you are to get a table! Door Prizes: We love to redistribute the wealth so if you have a door prize you can donate, we would love to have it! Spin Doctors: If you have a question about spinning, find one of the volunteer Spin Doctors who have graciously offered to help. We ask a $5 donation to help cover the expense of the space.
