10 Instructions for Dye Wood and Carve Designs It s EASY 1. Dye the Wood 2. Transfer the Pattern 3. Carve Away Pattern Lines SAFETY FIRST! Never carve toward your self or your hand that is holding your wood! Brace your carving wood and keep your hands out of the path of the tools at all times. Always push the tool you are using away from your body! Carve with the grain of the wood for ease and cleanest cuts. Turn the wood, as you carve, to an angle that is comfortable to work. keep a razor-sharp edge on your tools Require Require Carving Tools Step 1: Dye the Wood 1. Sand wood if necessary. remove all dust. 2. Place dye in container; add 1 cup warm water. Stir until completely dissolved. Note: Sal and fix are not needed to stain wood. 3. Apply the dye liberally to the wood using sponge brush. You do not have to worry about even coverage or brush strokes as you would with paint - just make sure you get dye on all of the wood, including the back. Let dry (approximately one hour). General Supplies: Fine Sandpaper Paper Towels Tracing Paper Containers for mixed dyes Sponge Brush for applying dye Rubber Gloves Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer Stope 2: Transfer the Pattern 1. While your dyed wood is drying, trace the pattern onto tracing paper, using a felt tip or ball point pen. 2. When the dyed wood is dry to the touch, transfer the pattern to the center of the tray by taping the traced pattern in position, and then slipping white transfer paper, coated side down, between the pattern and the wood. 3. Retrace the pattern lines with a pencil, being sure all the lines you will need for carving are transferred before untaping and removing your pattern. You may wish to only transfer the main design lines, and fill in the shading lines as you carve. 10 Phone Fax

11 Try it Step 3: Carve the Design 1. make Outline Cuts along your pattern lines, using the small V-Tool. Remember to push the tool away from yourself, using as little pressure as possible, and remove small amounts of wood with each stroke. To widen or fattern outline cuts, go back over the same lines, tilting the V of the tool slightly to the side, and slice through the wood within the walls of your first cut. the entire veggie or fruit design is carved using the small V-tool, and line width are varied by widening the initial cut. 2. We show two styles of borders around the rims of our trays The triangle border is created just like the main design, using only the V-tool. The other border is created by using a wider tool, the straight Gouge#9 Sweep, which is pushed along the wood in the same manner as described above. Step 4: Finish, If Desired If you wish, protect your carved tray with a few light coats of clear acrylic spray to seal the surface attach a small sawtooth hanger to the back, and hang it up for all to enjoy! That s all it takes to create these bright, fun home dec accents! Why Dye? Dylon Cold water Dyes produce bright, intense colors, yet allow the woodgrain to show through. The colors are vivid when dry, and not washed out! For the deepest, brightest shades, dissolve dye in one cup of warm water and apply full strength to the wood Dylon Cold Water dyes are easy to mix - no boiling is needed! Dyes can be mixed to create unique shades and colors. Dyes are easily applied to wood with a sponge, brush, or cloth. You don t have to worry about even coats as you do with paint! For darker colors, apply a second or third coat of dye. You could certainly use thinned, or even opaque coats of paint, if you prefer, to created your carved veggie and fruit tray, but if you try dyeing, you will discover a whole new look for your wood projects! Try these patterns and dye and carve techniques on boxes, plates and trays, plaques, rounds and planks! Use a copier to enlarge your pattern tracings to fit the basswood product of your choice. 11
