2 ScyLight SeCure and Laser communication Technology New ARTES Framework called ScyLight (pronounce skylight ) is proposed for ESA Council at Ministerial level (Dec. 2016) Rationale: Optical communications are considered to be one of the next major revolutions in satellite communication, bringing unprecedentedly high levels of transmission rates, data security and resilience. Technical developments and early implementations cannot demonstrate its full capabilities, as the optical solution is mainly used in non-optimized (satcom) systems. Due to the highly innovative nature and the associated high technical and commercial risks, some of the activities to be conducted may require support at an increased intensity. ESA-led activities to address system level approach involving all satcom stakeholders. 3 ScyLight - Objectives The overarching objectives of ScyLight are: Address the development and use of innovative optical technologies for satellite communication as well as new market opportunities. Demonstrate the maturity of optical communication technology to the end user community. Support industry to develop capabilities and competitiveness in the field of optical technologies, enabling seize related emerging market opportunities for products based on the newly developed technologies. ScyLight will address the following thematic areas: Optical Communication Terminal Technology Intra-Satellite Photonics/ Optical Payloads Quantum Cryptography Technologies ESA 01/01/2016 Slide 3

4 ScyLight Framework (1/2) ScyLight will will be implemented in 4 Lines (requiring Letter of Support by National Delegation): Line 1 (Common System and Technologies Activities) covers ESA-initiated market and system studies including optical transmission/propagation studies, ESA coordination of user and expert groups (i.e. satellite primes, operators, service providers, industry and international partners) to define the roadmap and derive ESA ITTs. development activities on critical and commonly required components and their validation, evaluation and in-orbit verification coordination efforts with standardization bodies. ESA Workplan, Open Competition, parallel contracts, 100% funded Line 2 (Optical Communication Terminals and components) covers Industry initiated developments and in-orbit verification/proof of concept on terminals and components addressing: Intersatellite Links and Data Relay Services, Direct to Ground Links, Optical feeder links, Airborne to Space/Ground Links, Optical User-Ground Stations. Direct Negotiation, depending on risk up to 75% funded, requires description of the target customer base or future target market. ESA 01/01/2016 Slide 4

5 ScyLight Framework (2/2) ScyLight will will be implemented in 4 Lines: Line 3 (Intra-Satellite Photonics / Optical Payloads) covers Industry initiated developments and in-orbit verification/proof of concept addressing: extremely high bandwidth equipment, optical fiber/harness at spacecraft level, technologies resulting in lightweight, low volume equipment. Line 4 (Quantum Cryptography Technologies) covers development and in-orbit/service demonstrations via ESA-led activities but also via Industrial/University/Research Inst.-led proposals on: Quantum Cryptography technologies Quantum Key Generation and Distribution systems (end-to-end) Direct Negotiation, depending on risk up to 75% funded, requires description of the target customer base or future target market -ESA Workplan, Open Competition, parallel contracts, 100% funded -Direct Negotiation Industry: up to 75% funded University/Research: 1up to 100% ESA 01/01/2016 Slide 5
