4 1 THE ACADEMY FOR CREATIVE MEDIA AT WEST OAHU Creative Media is a dynamic and growing professional field. It is both a 4 year and transfer pathway for students interested in pursuing or continuing on in the Creative Media Arts. This concentration provides students with an opportunity for professional positions in a wide variety of emerging media industries, such as Video Game Design and Development, Interactive Design, Motion and Visual Graphics, and Transmedia Film, TV Production and New Media; or a solid foundation on which to continue on for advanced education in Media. This degree is especially appropriate for students who have a passion for applying analytical and creative thinking skills in digital media. Transfer students in the UH system who have completed an Associates degree program in a digital media program at a UH Community College or from outside of the UH system may be eligible for admission. The 4 year student will develop within the breath of Creative Media arts that enables them to engage in creative problem solving from a multi-discipline approach. The transfer student will be introduced to the breath of the humanities while reinforcing their depth of knowledge in the Creative Media fields. Website:

5 ACM FOCUS AREAS HUMANITIES APPLIED SCIENCE 2 Video Game Design and Development Do you love playing video games? Think that you might like designing them yourself? Learn how to be apart of their creation and design, develop, and bring your own to life on the game design and development track! Interactive Design/Motion and Visual Graphics Interactive Design and Motion graphics utilizes a variety of media combined with computer technology to create moving graphics for communications media, such as film, video, television, gaming, smartphones, internet, etc. Transmedia Film, TV Production, and New Media Learn about different aspects of film and tv production while incorperating new media into the process. Through this track you can learn to write a script, create short films, edit, produce, as well as how to protect yourself as a creative. General Creative Media Students take 18 credits in Art (ART) or Creative Media (CM), with at least three level courses from the various tracks.

6 3 CREATIVE MEDIA CLASSES Explore some of the possibilites to start your creative media journey! ART 112 Introduction to Digital Art Want to see if your interest lie within the Creative Media realm? Taking this required ART 112 course will carry you through the basic fundamentals of Digital art and/or will help you brush up on the skills you already possess. Pre: Placement in ENG 100 or concurrent enrollment in ENG 22. CM 142 Introduction to Video Game Design Sign up for CM 142 to learn the design process and development of Gaming -- Ready, Set, GO! Pre: Placement in ENG 100 CM 155 Introduction to Screenwriting Harness your screenwriting abilities while birthing potential short films in CM 155! Pre: ENG 100 or equivalent with a C or better.

7 4 CM 351 Innovative Advertising Let s face it, we live in the AdAge. Learn different strategies and objectives of successful Advertising process in CM 351! Pre: Placement in ENG 100 or concurrent enrollment in ENG 22. CM 353 Making a Short Film Your short films might turn into films on the Big Silver screen one day, who knows! Join CM 353 and get started! Pre: CM 120 CM 401 Creative Professionals In the pursuit of our careers, it is important we know the legal boundaries and rights of our professions under the law. Learn more in CM 401! Pre: ART 112 with a C or higher; and ENG 100. CM 400 (alpha) Creative Media Taught by a visiting artist or practitioner, this course provides students with an advanced workshop in a creative media technique or skillset. We currently offer A: Advanced Screenwriting; B: Stop-Motion Animation; C: Visual Design for Mobile Applications; and D: Documentary Arts. Pre: ART 112 with a C or higher; and ENG 100.

8 5 MEET THE ACM FACULTY C Chris Lee is a motion picture producer (Valkyrie, Superman Returns), former President of Production of Columbia/TriStar Pictures, and the Founder and Director of the Academy for Creative Media at the Univer- H Heather Giugni is an esteemed and accomplished filmmaker and currently acts as a mentor to UHWO Academy for Creative Media students. She also is the cultural collection specialist for Ulu ulu. G Gary Shimokawa is an director, producer and professor. He has directed and produced shows for over 35 years totaling over 600 episodes. He is also a professor here in the Creative Media program. S Sharla Hanaoka is an local born art director and also the Creative Media Associate Director here at UHWO. She now teaches both at Leeward Community College and the University of Hawai i - West O ahu.

9 SPRING 2017 CM STUDENT ASSISTANTS 6 KEVIN BECHAYDA is a junior with a passion for filmmaking. He has an eye for perfect composition and an ear for music. He enjoys spending his free time playing his guitar and ukulele and getting things off high shelves for his short co-workers. JANELLE SAOLE is a junior focusing on music composition and sound. She enjoys singing her heart out at the top of her lungs and saying hi to strangers. Her signature look is wearing her hair in a bun, high a top her head. ASHLEY GUZMAN is in her last semester of the Creative Media Program and focusing on Graphic Design and Film. She likes to have sing-a-longs to Disney songs with her co-worker Janelle and laughing until she turns purple.

10 7 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the difference between applied science and humanities? The only difference are the core requirements for both of them! You can view these on our website Do I have to choose a focus area? No, you are able to do a general creative media track and take classes from each of the different focus areas. Do I have to be a two-year transfer student to join the creative media program at UH West Oahu? No, you may join our program as an incoming freshman! Are there online classes available? Yes there are online classes available! Please check the semester class availability online to see when they are being offered.
