Unit 8 task 2 By omer muratoglu and George Kabasubabo-koni

What is a producer? Overall, the producers have the command on every feature of a film s production. They gather, assemble and endorse the whole production team. The producers are responsible for creating an environment where the cast and crew and exploit their talents. They (the producers) are credited with the success of the completed movie. They take control and lead from the start of the film to its completion. Source:

Examples of TV Producer(s) Dan Schneider Shows produced: ICarly, Victorious, Sam and Cat, Drake and Josh, Kenan and Kel Source: Wikipedia

Examples of Film Producer(s) Kevin Feige Films produced: Thor, The Avengers, Captain America (Civil War), Spiderman (Homecoming) Source: Wikipedia

Skills and qualifications There are no specific qualifications needed to become a producer. Courses that you may take if you want to become a producer are marked (with much detail) by the film industry. They can award you the creative skillset tick for your preparation to go into filming and the high standard of education they provide. It is recommended that you start off your career as a production assistant or runner so that you can develop and prove your trust and reliability towards yourself and others who are likely to be working with you in the long term. 7 Working hours The working hours for a producer can be long and irregular. It is common for a producer to work under a freelance contract (when the producer is self employed and is hired to work for different companies to complete tasks). Most of the work for the producer is done at the office, producers do visit studios and/or locations but these are generally for meetings or conferences. The median salary for a producer is about 45k a year.

Editor Editors work closely with the directors. Most of the editor s work takes place during post production. The editor and director use their creative skills to assemble material which has to be finalized and approved by the producer(s). Once the approval is given, the created material can then be processed and released

Example of tv editor

Example of film editor: Daniel P. Hanley Examples of films edited: - Rush (2013) The Da Vinci Code (2006) Inferno (2016) How the Grinch stole Christmas (2000)

Skills and qualifications There are no qualifications needed in order to become and editor. The main skills that you must acquire when it comes to editing is creativity, the best editors are all creative because their imagination runs wild and allows them to be inspired by the ideas they have. Editors also need to have good communication skills as they (or you) would have to work with the producers as well to complete the work before it is finalised by the producers.

Director In the production of a film/television series the director is responsible for the managing of most aspects of the production. One of their duties is to try and realize their vision of what should happen and what things should look like by informing all of the different departments of what he wants in a scene such as colouring, props and giving instructions to actors on what he wants them to do. The director does not just manage this but also the budget and more technical aspects of production such as working with people to ensure that his vision is realized without going over the set budget, and working with the editor in deciding what scene s the movie will use in the end. The average wage for a director is around 30000

Examples of Director's (film) Directors can take different approaches to the job as seen with the examples below. Film directors Steven spielberg ( spielberg takes a very active hand and tries to micromanage as much as he can, and does not generally use improv although their are likely still cases why it is used.) -example of work, minority report. Mark duplass ( duplass takes a much more lenient take on directing trusting the different departments to do their jobs well enough, and allow for large amounts of improvisation from the different actors.) - togetherness.

Examples of directors (tv) Many aspiring directors start on tv which is why people such as steven spielberg started their career as a director as a tv director. Examples of people who work as tv directors at the moment could be mark cendrowski who directs the tv sitcom big bang theory and has over his career directed many more tv shows and has decided not to move to movies and stick with tv. Another person who directed for tv is ray dal who directed the frozen planet series of tv documentaries.

Director qualifications Regardless of what qualification you possess you can not straight away become a director, as you will be required to spend some degree of time doing other roles such as filming or editing before you are granted the opportunity, the way this works is as you get better you will deal with more responsibility so rather than a large jump it is a much smaller and more manageable one. The average level of education that directors have vary with the vast majority having at least a certificate program to show that they have understanding on the different types of theories the creation of film requires.

Director skill requirements There's a variety of skills that a director requires. These skills include the creativity and vision needed to bring the script to life in a way that can be enjoyed by an audience. The leadership skills to lead a large group of people and motivate them to work to the best of their abilities, as they are in charge of all other members of the crew that is working on a movie, however in some instances they may be replaced if they disagree with the main actor if they are a large name themselves. Directors need to be able to deal with situations that arise quickly to ensure they stay within time frame and need to be able to manage a budget for the film.

Job advertisment In the modern world it is possible to find job advertisements of director positions for both tv and films online, which means it is extremely easy to find said vacancies. The main way that directors get their position is that they are selected by a producer who will have a list of directors in mind when thinking of a film and then the director is free to pick and choose which film s they feel catch their interest and they think they can work with.

Job conditions. For Directors the Job conditions vary from contract to contract how ever there are aspects that tend to remain the same form one contract to the next. On topic which is always touched upon is conditions of the director turning up to work and what happens if the film needs to be put on hold. The reason for this is that it is important conditions like this are put up in case of the director getting injured and being unable to film so the company can hire another director and so the director knows what would happen is a event stops production such as death of a main actor.

Job conditions slide 2 Another major point of contracts is to sort out the rights that the director has in regards to the film. This means in effect any sort of claim that they may have such as wanting their name to be associated with the movie ect. Something which the producer normally gets the rights to so they can use it to advertise the film if the director is well known. This also states the compensation that the director is entitled to in the creation of a film meaning what the contract gives them is all they will receive. Directors work very irregular hours and long shifts which takes large amounts of time and can be required to travel long distances how ever a studio normally coves long travel expenses.

Screen writer A screen writer will create the script of a film, television show, game ect. Telling actors what actions they need to take and what needs to be said. They will use size 12 font size and courier as the font, the general rule of thumb is that they will try and write the script so that one page is the equivalent of one minute of screen time. As screen writers are freelancers the only thing which separates professionals from amateurs is whether they have a manager or not who will represent them and negotiate for prices. Because of this their is no minimum wage for screenwriters but the writers guild sets a minimum price for a piece of work set by the writer guild of great britain of just over

Examples of screen writers While it is not necessary to fulfill another role in in the development process there are a fair few directors such as quentin tarantino who make the decision to write the screenplay for their productions. While there is a large number of directors ho do their own screenplays there's till many who chose not to and need their screenplays and need them written by someone else which is where people like cinco paul come in who create screenplays for them or for animated films which is pauls speciality writing screenplays for films such as despicable me and horton hears a who.

Qualifications needed. As most screenwriters work as freelancers they have no requirement for formal qualifications as long as they can create screenplays of a quality that a company is willing to buy their product however would still benefit from experian and qualifications in english due to the techniques it will teach you. However there are some companies that hire their own screenwriters which they keep on full time such as the bbc which requires a degree in english to ensure they are capable before they are hired by the company. Which i imagine is representative of others who hire screenwriters full time.

Job advertisment Their are very few full time jobs for screenwriters however they can be found offered by some companies which post the advertisements on their web sites such as the BBC. Most screenwriters however are free lancers and will send of their screenplays to a company hoping that they they will be purchased with the more professional screenwriters having managers who will sort this out for them and getting them better prices than a screenwriter them self could manage for a cut of the profit.

Job conditions Due to the nature of the job, their are very little conditions on the work itself as screen writers are freelancers. However there are conditions put on the purchase of the works by companies such as the companies making sure that writers cannot ask for more if the film is very successful. Most of the work done is done at a writer's home which serves as their main base of operation, meaning people needed to be able to work without supervision, however this does grant the opportunity to choose one's own hours.

How do they fit together. The production of a film works very much like an old machine with many different gears and cogs moving and working together to create the desired result/product. The first aspect of film creation is the creation of the screenplay by a screen writer as it serves as the backbone on which the film is created using it as a guideline, the screenwriter will then send off the screen play to a company to try and sell it for money. After a screenplay is sold it could either be kept or made into a movie if the company decides the latter they will appoint a producer.

How they fit together slide 2 The job of the producer is to ensure that that the film has everything it needs such as the cast and a director and makes sure it is progressing nicely. Once a director has been chosen to taken on a film they will take up command of most operations decide what shots to take e.g. and will then once the filming has been finished will work with the editor with choosing the shots and effects that they want. While the editor works with the director for choosing when shots should end and they also do large amounts of post production work necessary to create the desired end product.
