1 Towards Enhancement of Communication Systems, Networks and Applications for Smart Environment 1.0 Introduction A great deal of research in communication systems, networks and applications (CSNA) has been geared towards creating a smarter environment with the objectives of improving quality of life and building sustainable societies. The enhancement of CSNA has been intended to integrate technologies and services such as transportation, smart home and office, smart building, smart government, smart city, smart grid, and many more, tremendously impacting on almost every aspect of our lives. Artificial intelligence based approaches, such as deep learning, reinforcement learning and game theory, have been identified as the enabling techniques underlying recent advances in various aspects of CSNA, from the application to the physical layers of the network protocol stack, to provide smarter environment which has been characterized as dynamic, heterogeneous and complex. Looking forward, the use of artificial intelligence based approaches is expected to have considerable impact in both traditional and next generation technologies, including 5G, cognitive radio networks, vehicular networks, wireless sensor networks, and so on. We invite researchers to contribute original research papers examining the state of the art, architectures and protocols, algorithms and solutions, as well as prototype and field tests, for next generation communication systems, networks and applications contributing to a smarter environment. Most towns and cities around the world cannot afford to miss the boom of smart environment in order to provide better quality of life for their citizens. The smart environment initiative is foreseen to attract significant investments and pilot projects. The enhancement of communication systems, networks and applications (CSNA), coupled with the use of artificial intelligence based approaches, has played a significant role in the feasibility of smart environment. This has led to a growing and thriving research community investigating various aspects of this research area, from the networking (e.g., 5G and cognitive radio) and artificial intelligence (e.g., deep learning and reinforcement learning) domains to cross-disciplinary domains (e.g., application of artificial intelligence to CSNA applied to smart environment), with the objective of addressing the dynamicity, heterogeneity and complexity of the smart environment. This special issue, which consolidates advances in CSNA and the use of artificial intelligence to establish smart environment, will appeal to a wide research community due to its holistic coverage that includes networking and artificial intelligence domains, as well as crossdisciplinary domains. Papers selected for publication in this special issue, which present novel contributions to this research areas, will be of interest to a wide readership, including industry practitioners, researchers as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students.

4 5.0 Biographies of Guest Editors Kok-Lim Alvin Yau Kok-Lim Alvin Yau is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Computing and Information Systems, Sunway University. He researches, lectures and consults in cognitive radio, wireless networking, applied artificial intelligence and reinforcement learning. He received his B. Eng. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (First Class Honors) from the Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia (2005), a MSc (Electrical Engineering) from the National University of Singapore (2007), and a PhD (Network Engineering) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand (2010). He was awarded the 2007 Professional Engineer Board of Singapore Gold Medal for being the best graduate of the MSc degree in 2006/07. He serves as an Editor of the KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Systems, Guest Editors of Special Issues of the IEEE Access, IET Networks, and IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine, as well as a regular Reviewer for over 20 journals and magazines published by Elsevier, IEEE, IET, Springer, Taylor and Francis, and Wiley. He serves as TPC and reviewer for various major international conferences including AINA, Globecom, ICC, LCN, PIMRC and VTC. He also served as General Co-chairs of IET ICFCNA 17 and IET ICFCNA 14, as well as Co-chair Organising Committee of IET ICWCA'12. David Chieng David Chieng is currently the head of Location-based technology research in MIMOS focusing on Indoor Navigation & Tracking System. While in MIMOS he also successfully completed 2 national funded research projects on HetNet and rural wireless access. Prior, he spent 4 years in British Telecom (BT Innovate & Design) leading the Broadband Wireless Access research group focusing on BT Wireless Cities initiative. From he led a work package in EU ICT FP7 Carrier Grade Wireless Mesh Network project. From , he worked on a European EPSRC Cordless Access to Multimedia Applications project. From , he was a principal researcher in Brokering Open Network Differentiated Services project funded by Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd. He was selected as a member of UK@COMDEX 2001 team at Las Vegas, Nevada where he presented his agent brokering system prototype. From , he worked as a VoIP product specialist. From , he was a lecturer, then senior lecturer in Faculty of Engineering, Multimedia University and was leading joint research projects funded by Panasonic R&D Centre, in Computer Telephony Integration and Ubiquitous Computing. David received his MSc(electronics) and PhD(computer networks) from Queen s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, U.K., in 1998 and 2002 respectively. He has authored and co-authored over 60 publications in international journals, book chapters, and prestigious conferences such as INFOCOM, ICC, Globecom, COMMAG, PIMRC. He has filed 22 patents in the area of wireless and computing and serves as a regular reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Comms, IEEE COMMAG, IET Communications, IET Wireless Sensor Systems, Computer Networks, Computer Communications and TPC and reviewer for various major international conferences such as ICC, VTC, WCNC, etc. He also served as TPC-chair for IET ICWCA'12.

5 Junaid Qadir Junaid Qadir is an Associate Professor at the Information Technology University (ITU)-Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. He is the Director of the IHSAN Lab at ITU that focuses on deploying ICT for development, and is engaged in systems and networking research. Prior to joining ITU, he was an Assistant Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (SEECS), National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan. At SEECS, he directed the Cognet Lab at SEECS that focused on cognitive networking and the application of computational intelligence techniques in networking. He has been awarded the highest national teaching award in Pakistan the higher education commission s (HEC) best university teacher award for the year His research interests include the application of algorithmic, machine learning, and optimization techniques in networks. In particular, he is interested in the broad areas of wireless networks, cognitive networking, software-defined networks, and cloud computing. He serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Access, IEEE Communication Magazine, and Springer Nature Big Data Analytics. He is a member of ACM, and a senior member of IEEE. Qiang Ni Qiang Ni is a Professor (Chair) and the Head of Communications Group at the School of Computing and Communications, Lancaster University, Lancaster, U.K. Prior to that, he led the Intelligent Wireless Communication Networking Group at Brunel University, London, UK. His main research interests are communications, networking, Cognitive Radio and Smart Grid technologies. He has led various UK and EU projects in these fields. Prof Ni has published more than 160 papers which have attracted over 4800 citations. Prof Ni is the Fellow of IET, Fellow of The Higher Education Academy, Senior Member of IEEE and was an IEEE Wireless Standard Working Group Voting Member and a contributor to the IEEE wireless standards. He is the Editor of IEEE Access, Wiley Journal of Security and Communication Networks, KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Systems and IEEK Transactions on Smart Processing & Computing. 6.0 Potential Source of Papers This special issue will solicit papers through three ways: conference, invitation and open call for papers as follows: a. Selected Papers from IET International Conference on Frontiers of Communications, Networks and Applications 2017 Extended versions of papers submitted by authors who have presented their work at the IET International Conference on Frontiers of Communications, Networks and Applications (ICFCNA 17) will be selected to publish in this special issue. The ICFCNA 17 is a forum that brings together researchers from academia as well as practitioners from industry to meet and exchange ideas and recent research work on all aspects of

6 communications, networks and applications for smart environment. The Guest Editors have planned to select high-quality papers relevant to the scope of this Journal from the accepted papers. Selection is based on the reviewers comments and scores achieved by the papers, as well as the presentations made during the conference. The Guest Editors will invite authors of selected papers to substantially extend their papers with at least 70% difference compared to the conference version. The title of extended version should differ itself from the conference version which helps to identify the distinguishing parts of the conference and extended versions. The selected extended papers may be accepted or rejected based on the Journal reviewers comments and scores. The Guest Editors have successfully published extended versions of selected highquality papers from the previous conference in a Special Issue entitled Creating a Smarter Environment through the Advancement of Communication Systems, Networks and Applications in IET Networks, which is available at 0 in IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Our previous conference was successfully held and presented papers have been published at in IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The team of the Guest Editors is confident that this special issue will similarly attract high-quality research papers in this impactful research area. b. Open Call for Papers Papers submitted by authors who are informed about this open call for paper advertised and distributed through popular mailing lists (e.g., Technical Committee on Computer Communications, TCCC), our conference website, technical committees (e.g., Technical Committee on Cognitive Networks, TCCN and Wireless Communications Technical Committee, WCTC), our professional circles of academia and industry, as well as our personal websites. With the extensive contacts of the Guest Editors in the research community, there will be a broad distribution of the open call for paper. For these actions, we will abide to the guidelines of the Journal. c. Invitation Papers submitted by authors from the professional circles of the Guest Editors. The team of the Guest Editors consists of researchers from both academia and industry spanning multiple countries. Renowned researchers in this research area will be invited to submit papers. All papers submitted to this Special Issue via the three above approaches will undergo a peerreview process, with each paper being reviewed by at least three international reviewers. This ensures that only high-quality research papers are accepted for publication in this Special Issue.
