2 Project Description Since its launch in 1979, Nickelodeon (aka Nick) has grown to become the most-watched television network by kids in the United States, and basic cable s #1 network overall. For over a quarter century, they ve hosted a star-studded event bringing kids closer to their favorite celebrities The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, also known as the KCAs. This project was intended to create and build excitement and user engagement with the KCAs, via ios devices, starting eight weeks out from the event. Project Purpose This year, the mission was clear: Make this the biggest, baddest, best KCAs ever! To best support this, Fi needed to create a rich and intuitive multimedia content browsing experience, nested within a platform that allowed for voting, and live streaming of the event But it had to be FUN for kids 8-12, and continue to be fun and engaging throughout the 8-week buildup to the event. Target audience(s) Kids 8-12 years-old, and anybody else interested in the well-known KCA institution, or even entertainment in general. Business or organizational goals and challenges, and how these were addressed (If relevant to the project) KPI s included total downloads, repeat use, and total votes cast via the ios application interface. We engineered a gamified experience, enmeshed with the secret agent theme for 2012 KCAs event, and designed a UI that facilitated and encouraged repeat usage and deeper engagement. User goals and challenges, and how these were addressed Designing for kids 8-12 is not something we do every day, so we dug deep into Nickelodeon s market research to best familiarize ourselves with what grabs and holds the attention of today s kids. Key to the challenge was engagement: both deep and repeated. The cohesive theming combined with gamification elements worked together to deliver an experience that kids used over and over, and over again. User experience process, methodology and approaches, including usability methods and any user input that was obtained and incorporated. No one knows kids like Nickelodeon, so when we dug into their extensive market data and research we confirmed our hunch: Kids love games, especially when there's a sense of accomplishment and collaborative payoff, shared with other players. Now we knew that gamification of the app experience was critical to our core objectives, and we'd be looking to create a game that made every kid a super secret special agent. With the trademark green slime at the heart of the KCA experience, our approach revolved around a global kids effort to collect the most slime ever. The focus was on a smooth and intuitive flow of information and functionality. The trick here was to maintain the integrity of the experience in three distinctly different stages of the event timeline: Pre-Event, During the Event, and Post-Event. Any project metrics that show the extent of user adoption or project success, if applicable (note sources and dates) THE USER EXPERIENCE AWARDS SUBMISSION

3 Total Unique Users = 300k+ Total User Sessions = 2.6m+ Total Votes Submitted = +10% vs *all data obtained via Flurry analytics as of 4/26/12 Notable, unusual or innovative user experience components An in-app game experience without crowding or conflicting with the core functionalities was a unique challenge for our UX & Strategy Team. In the end, we devised a scheme that incentivized core user objectives voting and content consumption while fully cloaked in the secret agent theme. Key components included a global slime collection meter that further built on the idea that this was a global kids effort where everyone was collaborating and working together to make this year s event the best ever, as well as a set of incentives and rewards including secret agent badges and special spy gadgets. Why this project delivers an exceptional user experience and merits an award Simple, clean, uncrowded interface delivers deeply rich multimedia browsing environment along with key functions that drive business and user KPI s.
