STOA Workshop Integrated e-ticketing for public transport and touristic sites October 16th, , Conference Room ASP A6G-3, European Parliament, Brussels. Summary An important strategy to overcome the imbalance in the mode share of individual transport compared to collective transport is the development of an integrated multimodal transport system. The overarching idea of such a system is to combine all modes on a single ticket and establish interoperable fare management. Integrated ticketing for public transport has been on the agenda of EU transport policy for over a decade now. And indeed there has been increasing development of smart ticketing schemes over the past years, especially in big cities, but so far existing schemes remained relatively small and mutual acceptance is not possible. Consequently, the Transport White Paper from 2011 proposes to establish a framework for a European multimodal transport information, management and payment system by Integrated ticketing schemes aim at facilitating the combination of modes and the transfer between them. Moreover, e-ticketing could be extended to major entertainment and touristic sites and thus facilitate access to major points of interest within cities, making e-ticketing specifically interesting for travellers and the tourism industry. However, a large number of stakeholders with partly diverging interests are involved in the implementation process: financial service providers, telecommunications operators, public transport authorities, and the tourism sector. Furthermore, the operation of schemes is determined by the preferences of existing and potential end-users. Aim of the workshop is to present a comprehensive picture of integrated e-ticketing solutions that combine public transport and touristic features and to discuss the potential of integrated e-ticketing for both sectors. A focus will be on the different actors that are important for a successful implementation and their view on future developments. Presentations include interim results of the ongoing STOA project, as well as an assessment of the actual state-of-the art from representatives and scientists from the transport and tourism sector.
Programme Arrival Welcome and opening Antonio Cancian, MEP, Transport and Tourism Committee Integrated Ticketing: drivers and barriers for implementation Maike Puhe, Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology Putting the visitor first - the iamsterdam city card Hans Dominicus, Director Research, Development & Market Intelligence, Amsterdam Marketing Role of multi-application e-ticketing for public transport Brigitte Ollier, Director UITP Euro Team, International Association of Public Transport Tourists transport habits and the influence of integrated ticketing Prof. Dr. Phil. Werner Gronau, University of Applied Science, Stralsund, Leisure and Tourism Management Discussion Closing remarks Antonio Cancian (MEP, Transport and Tourism Committee) Information: Peter Ide-Kostic, STOA Administrator: peter.idekostic@ep.europa.eu
Integrated eticketing: drivers and barriers for implementation The presentation will be based on the interim results of the STOA project on integrated e-ticketing for public transport and touristic sites. It will focus on the complex process of implementing integrated e-ticketing systems. It will address relevant drivers and barriers for the different stakeholders involved in the process, particularly focusing on existing and potential end-users. Maike Puhe has been employed at the Institute of Technology Assessment and Systems Analyses (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) since She participated in several STOA projects and is currently the project leader of the STOA project on Integrated eticketing. At present her work focuses on the mutual relationship between technological innovations and socio-economic developments within the mobility system. Against this background, her research activities focus on the potentials of technologies to change established mobility patterns and to enable new mobility concepts. Putting the visitor first - the iamsterdam city card With a background of 20 years experience in visitor management, the city of Amsterdam has developed an integrated platform for leisure and transport. Visitors are using a concept for entrance facilitation and public transport, at the same time they are leaving valuable data by their footsteps. Visitor behaviour, collaboration, accessibility and implementability are keywords of this speech. Hans Dominicus is director of Amsterdam Marketing s centre for research, development and market intelligence. He graduated at the University in Breda in tourism management (1980) and has worked in different fields of international tourism. He joined Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Board in 1990, where he held different management positions. Since 2013 several organizations are merged in Amsterdam Marketing as overall City Marketing organization. Together with the University INHolland (Amsterdam) and the Shanghai Normal University he initiated a knowledge centre in urban tourism in Hans Dominicus holds various positions in the international tourism network and has seats in several committees and advisory boards, both on European and global level.
Role of multi-application e-ticketing for public transport The presentation will draw a picture of integrated ticketing that could be used in different countries for public transport trips It will be shown that existing contactless technology is mature enough, allowing public transport operators to use a single common specification for usage devices that can support and load different tickets and are able to work securely. The presentation will give an overview on the work conducted by the Smart Ticket Alliance and will show that such developments will facilitate environmentally sustainable mobility and that in particular tourists in urban areas will benefit. Brigitte Ollier is Director of the UITP European Department, which is the department, within the International Association for Public Transport, in charge of the interest representation towards the European institutions. She has been involved in European affairs since 1986 and was notably the Head of the Business Friendly Environment Department of the European Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry from 1989 to 2002, where she was responsible for policy co-ordination and management of European projects related to single market issues, enterprise policy, environment, regional policy and transport. She holds an MBA from OUBS. Tourists transport habits and the influence of integrated ticketing Especially within metropolitan areas integrated ticketing becomes more and more popular in recent years. Little research has been done so far to get a more detailed inside to the interrelation of integrated ticketing and tourism development. The presentation will focus on how or to what extend those developments may influence tourist behavior in the future and if a significant change in the travel mode choice of tourists can be expected, due to integrated ticketing? Might integrated ticketing even influence the decisions making process of choosing a specific destination? Might therefore integrated ticketing be even able to spurn on tourism development within a certain destination? Based upon several case studies the presentation will try to give an inside to existing knowledge on theses aspects. Prof. Dr. Werner Gronau holds the position as Professor for Tourism, Travel & Transport at the
University of Stralsund/Germany, functions as Director of the Tourism&Transport Research Center of the University of Nicosia/Cyprus and is affiliated to the University of Bergamo/Italy as Visiting Professor. He holds a German Degree in Human Geography from the Technical University of Munich and a PhD in Tourism Studies from the University of Paderborn/ Germany. He is member of several research groups in the field of Tourism and Transport. Furthermore he works as Reviewer for several academic journals, such as Tourism Management, Leisure Studies or EuroMed Journal of Business. Furthermore he is chief-editor of the transport journal Studies on Mobility and Transport Research. His research interests focus on sustainable destination management and tourism related transport issues. He has worked in several research projects granted by different institutions as for example the German Ministry of Research or the European Commission and presented the results on international conferences, in various journals and books.
