Oil and Gas Focus Group 34
Subsea UK/NSRI simulation community Is a simulation community needed for the UK subsea sector? There is a precedent
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group The NAFEMS CFD working group includes contributors from many industries, several from the oil and gas sector The idea of a focus group for oil and gas applications had been mooted for several years. In 2016 we formed a specific oil and gas focus group The focus group comprises expert CFD users from across the sector and is currently preparing guidance for CFD practitioners for a range of applications.
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group There is already some high-level guidance available (for example, DNV recommended practice guidelines) However, there is currently no coordinated system of documentation on how to undertake practical CFD analysis for many oil and gas applications Whilst practitioners may agree on the high-level approach, the devil is in the detail, and it is likely that the approaches developed across the industry in the absence of detailed guidance will be inconsistent.
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group Experienced CFD engineers are undoubtedly undertaking similar kinds of routine simulations but have established their own methods and workflows which will differ, so CFD predictions will be inconsistent across our industry For CFD engineers entering the industry there is no coordinated literature that can assist when establishing new capability.
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group Inconsistency is bad for the industry it reduces confidence in advanced simulation approaches Without low-level, detailed guidance aimed at the practitioner, as the use of CFD and other simulation methods increases, so will inconsistency Without low-level guidance, there is a greater risk of poor practice
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group Example for atmospheric dispersion Severe expansion in mesh causes unrealistic distortion of plume envelope Inappropriate meshing motivated by HPC complacency prevented the CFD mesh from being adequately refined in the regions of interest
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group The focus group has set out to share knowledge and collaborate for the good of the industry review existing documentation and guidance produce practical guidance for CFD identify potential shortcomings in existing CFD software blind tests verification and validation It may not be possible to reach consensus on everything, but at least any open questions can be properly documented and returned to when better V&V data becomes available.
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group Document structure for technical safety
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group Document structure for flow assurance
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group Document structure for subsea/hydrodynamics
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group NAFEMS is not the only organisation to recognise that there is inconsistency in the industry TechnipFMC is leading a JIP in Houston aiming to consolidate CFD approaches in the offshore industry
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group
NAFEMS oil and gas focus group NAFEMS is not the only organisation to recognise that there is inconsistency in the industry TechnipFMC is leading a JIP in Houston aiming to consolidate CFD approaches in the offshore industry There is significant crossover between the JIP members and the NAFEMS focus group.
Subsea UK/NSRI simulation community Clearly there is some overlap between NAFEMS oil and gas focus group and the Subsea UK/NSRI simulation community Subsea UK/NSRI UK focussed CFD, FEA, other simulation methods Oil and gas, offshore wind, subsea mining, wave/tidal, defence, ocean science NAFEMS O&GFG International O&GFG has so far focussed on CFD, but NAFEMS remit is all forms of engineering simulation O&GFG is oil and gas in name many of the guides will be applicable to other industry sectors
Subsea UK/NSRI simulation community Is a simulation community needed for the UK subsea sector? Let us discuss
