4 About our All-Star Performer/Instructors: Aubrey Atwater & Elwood Donnelly Banjo, Tin Whistle, Clogging &, Vocals, Percussion Aubrey and Elwood are nationally and internationally recognized artists having toured extensively in the United States and occasionally abroad to Canada, Ireland, and England. Together they have delighted audiences for over twenty-seven years. Both self-taught musicians with roots in Rhode Island, they have produced an extensive catalog of recordings and both have written books and songbooks. Their music blends traditional music with Celtic roots, old-time gospel, acapella and dance tunes, with original works. Jess Dickinson Hammered Dulcimer Jess Dickinson has performed all over as a soloist, with orchestras, and in bluegrass bands. Author of instructional materials for the Hammered Dulcimer, Jess is a sought after instructor and performer and his instructional videos may be found on YouTube. Eileen Gannon Celtic Harp Specialized in Irish music, Eileen has won numerous awards and is an internationally recognized harpist having earned the All-Ireland Senior Harp Champion world title in Eileen holds a Bachelor s in music performance from St. Louis University with a Master s degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of Limerick. Her background includes performing with a variety of ensembles including orchestras and a chorale and extensive teaching experience. Tull Glazener Tull is well known in the dulcimer community as a former featured columnist for the Dulcimer Player News and prolific arranger of music for dulcimer. With numerous tablature books and recordings to his name, it s no surprise he s a sought after instructor and performer as well. Tull grew up playing brass instruments, piano and organ. He received a dulcimer as a gift and promptly forgot about it until he saw a performance in Indianapolis and he s been playing dulcimer ever since! Jeff Hames Jeff began learning the dulcimer at an early age when his grandfather gave him a dulcimer. Despite being a younger member of the dulcimer community, Jeff has won numerous awards and is already a sought after instructor with a busy teaching schedule! Marsha Harris Native American Flute, Bowed Dulcimer A recipient of numerous awards, Marsha Harris brings her own special blend of musical styles from old time music to original compositions. Marsha is a well-recognized performer and teacher spanning eclectic musical styles and several instruments. 4
5 Jim Miller Ukulele, Autoharp, Music Theory Jim has extensive experience in the traditional and folk music world, while also being a fantastic teacher and builder of hammered dulcimers. Jim is also a famed, in the dulcimer world at least, inventor of new folk instruments. While his inventions delight audiences, they may not always be the most practical. Jim currently teaches at East Tennessee State University in the Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music program. Linda Thomas & Dan DeLancey Hammered Dulcimer & Guitar A trained musician and music teacher, Linda Thomas first became interested in the hammered dulcimer when she saw it in a festival years ago. After a few quick lessons on the basics of set up and tuning, Linda took over her dulcimer education and is self-taught. Dan DeLancey grew up around Old Time and Bluegrass in a musical family. He learned to play guitar from listening to his grandmother s records and developed an interest in flatpicking lead guitar upon his discovery of Dan Crary and Doc Watson. Dan has received numerous awards for his flatpicking. Both Linda and Dan are sought after performers having recorded a dozen albums, published numerous instructional books, and are well-recognized instructors. Carol Walker Carol Walker, a former high school choral teacher, and classically trained pianist, harpist, and vocalist, bought her first dulcimer in A natural music teacher, Carol quickly became well known for her workshops in the folk music community. A recording artist, performer, and publisher of instructional books, Carol will be teaching a class featuring her knowledge of Manx music and has made two trips to the Isle of Man. Heidi Hess-Bynum Fiddle, Bowed Psaltery A classically trained cellist and violinist, Heidi grew up in Nashville, TN at a time when even classical ensembles were infused with fiddling. Her early exposure to Old Time and Bluegrass fiddling has helped to kindle her interest in these musical styles in recent years. Heidi holds a Bachelor s in Music Performance/ Teaching Music from Transylvania University with a Master s in Training and Development from the University of Saint Francis. She is a member of the Heartland Dulcimer Club. Suzanne Dennis Children s Classes Suzanne Dennis discovered the dulcimer at a craft festival many years ago. It took her back to her childhood and reminded her of watching her mother play piano and wanting so badly to play music also. It was years later that she had the opportunity to learn the dulcimer which put her on the path to join the Heartland Dulcimer Club. Suzanne teaches elementary school and uses the dulcimer in her classroom. Children immediately love the dulcimer. It seems doable to them, and they can start playing immediately. 5
