This letter, the website, and Face Book and our base are the only means we have to get the word out to the folks that are interested in traditional music and beyond! Reflections: Luckily the Frozen Pipes at the Fiddle & Pick didn t burst, and thawed just in time for hosting The 6 th Annual Eighth of January Old Time Music Weekend. The electric bill has tripled the norm but that is small sacrifice in comparison to busted pipes! EOJ was a huge success thanks to a full turnout of registrants, a fantastic staff of talented instructors, and really great hardworking volunteers! Chef Carla s meals were top notch! The weekend featured lots of mini concerts, jams and great classes. Other highlights of the weekend included Bobby Fulcher s History presentation, Kelsey Well s Crankie workshop, All-Star Instructor Band at Nashville s big Contra Dance, and a concert by Opry Star Banjoist, Mike Snider! The final big jam on Sat night; the energy was high while Alan O Bryant led us in our annual tradition to sing along to The Battle Of New Orleans and Chitlin Cookin Time In Cheatham County. I cannot thank everyone enough for this special weekend. It was so great to see everyone and share this experience with such fine folks as this crowd! Thanks for the memories! God Bless you all and thank you most sincerely for your prayers! On January 8 th I went with my friend Sandy to the Hermitage for the 8 th of Jan Commemoration. The Key note speaker was Brian Kilmeade, who has a book out; The Battle of New Orleans. We went through the museum and toured the mansion. I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed taking the day off for this field trip. Next year, the 2019 EOJ Old Time Music Weekend falls on the calendar VERY EARLY! YIKES! For now we are setting the dates of JAN 3,4, & 5 (Thurs night -Sat night year 2019). Save the Dates! I had the pleasure of teaching a fiddle camp at a most lovely Bed & Breakfast in Paducah on Jan 19 & 20. What a great town! Stayed in George Washington s Nephew s House! While we were in a luxurious setting, we spent the weekend with some down to earth folks! I think I would like to do more fiddle camps at Bed & Breakfasts; Anyone interested? Besides our regular on going Tues Jazz Class (advanced), there are two more unique classes added. One taught by Paul Abrams and One by Stan Lawrence. Guitar Chord Melody Class (just started Jan 8 but you can jump on board) Why: Chord Melody provides the guitarist with the opportunity to play songs by themselves without the accompaniment of a band and have the song intact. Melody and chords, no need for back up or could be played with a band; there is more to this class so for more details; like Paul Abrams Music on Facebook Or, call Paul Meeting Mondays weekly ($20 pay as you go) for Guitar players with moderate skills. Acoustic or electric with a small practice amp.

2 Beginning Jazz : This course is for guitar students and other stringed instruments who can play chords or accompaniment, and can solo to some degree over chords to a song they know. Be prepared to learn to read music, study theory and develop improvisational skills in swing and be-bop styles, according to the class preference. We will cover chord structure, scales beyond basic major and minor, playing off the beat, soloing survival skills. Materials will be provided on a weekly basis, and books recommended for purchase. 5 We host Kids Music Day Camp around June 21 every Summer. We are going to have two kid s Music Day camps (registration will be early April): The first to be hosted June for kids that maybe don t play an instrument (yet) or maybe play a little. Learn about music FUN-da-mentals, Get familiar with all of the instrument families, styles of music, learn some history tid bits and how music works. Save the dates! Registration TBA. (text Gretchen if you want show your interest; we need a head count to plan the schedule) The second to be hosted June 18-June 22 Monday-Friday for Kids that play an instrument ages (roughly ages but we have had kids attend that are ages 11 and 17 ) Note: Instruments played at this camp are usually Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin, Banjo, Bass. We can have a discussion about other possible instruments. If this Kids Day Camp is something you are interested in; please text Gretchen ; this way we can plan ahead to have special guest presenters, and schedule lay out for the number of students.
