1 Freedom High School School Year Guitar Conservatory Syllabus Teacher: Mr. Perez (407) Christopher.Perez@ocps.net Room: 829 Web: Course Overview: The FHS Guitar Conservatory is a highly specialized, studio oriented class of no more than ten students who each will receive private bi-weekly instruction. The purpose of the Conservatory is to prepare students for auditioning and being accepted into a collegiate guitar studio, further preparing for a life of professional guitar performance and/or teaching guitar in a school setting. Students in the Conservatory must also be enrolled in one of the FHS Guitar Ensembles. Goals and Expectations: (Students will ) 1. Continue to develop, refine and improve their individual guitar playing TECHINQUE, TONE and SOUND production. 2. Improve their ability to make proper ARTISTIC and MUSICAL choices. 3. Master and play various types of major and minor SCALES and CHORD PATTERNS. 4. PERFORM and LISTEN to others with proper respect and concert manners. 5. Receive evaluations to monitor and assess personal growth and progress. 6. Once each quarter, present a performance as part of an in-class recital. 7. Audition for the FMEA All-State Guitar Ensemble and audition for the OCPS All-County HS Guitar Ensemble. Regarding scope and sequence, music preparation and the audition experience are valuable and necessary requirements of the Conservatory. 8. Maintain a (GPA) grade point average of at least 3.5 UW/4.0 W. Colleges today are very competitive and only allow top students into their schools. Studies outside music are equally important. Successfully completing all class assignments and tests/exams will insure the best opportunities to be accepted academically and musically into the school(s) of your choice. Required Materials: PENCILS w/ erasers (No Pens!) Folder (provided) Scale sheets/chord chart (provided) Evaluation/Proficiency Sheets (provided) A metronome/tuner (There are good clip-on tuners available for under $20). If you have a smart phone, there are several metronome and tuner apps you can get for free or purchase. ** Important ** It is highly recommended that students in the FHS Guitar Conservatory make the smart investment of purchasing a professional entry level luthiered (hand made) classical guitar for home practice and public performance. Upon graduating high school, guitars will not be provided to students. It is expected that students studying at the collegiate level personally own professionally made classical guitars. Quality entry level professionally made classical guitars cost between $1,500 to $3,500, depending on the luthier. Please contact Mr. Perez regarding what and where to make this purchase. The $60.00 Guitar Maintenance Fee is only a one time payment for the school year to cover music purchases, guest artists, festival entry fees, transportation and guitar upkeep/string replacement. Since students in the Conservatory are enrolled in one of the guitar ensembles, double payments are not needed. Payments are due by Friday, September 1 st - checks made payable to Freedom High School, (Please write your phone number and the student s name on the check.) No student will be denied from playing guitar in class due to finances. Unfortunately, the FHS Guitar Program cannot absorb all costs for materials, fees and clinicians. Students and parents should communicate with Mr. Perez if there is a financial hardship so a payment plan may be set up over the course of the school year to cover costs for the class. A list of student obligations for monies owed to the Guitar Program will be sent to the Media Center beginning in October 2017.

3 P.3 - Guitar Conservatory Syllabus ( School Year) We will employ using different guitar music collections, including the Bridges guitar collection. Students will learn the best in classical guitar literature from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern musical periods. Grading: It is my expectation that students will meet all deadlines for this courses. If deadlines are not met, the following consequences will occur: A phone call to involve parents will be made. Student will be expected to make arrangements to complete work during tutoring hours. A grade of F will be placed in the grade book until satisfactory work is completed. 9 week grades: 60% Solo skill proficiencies / Music preparedness / Daily participation 40% Attending-Participating in Master Classes / Recitals / Performances Semester Exams: 100% Performance of a solo and scales (major and minor) Homework: You are expected to practice at least one hour each day outside of class as your homework. Emergency Treatment Form/Additions/Model Release Form: Given we will be performing off campus this year, all parents must fill out and students turn in the OCPS Emergency Treatment Form. This filled out form will allow your child to receive medical attention in case of an emergency. Given the FHS Guitar Program have received much publicity over the past several years, students and parents need to fill out the OCPS Model Release Form. Both sheets are due to Mr. Perez by Friday, September 1, 2017! We also need parents to become additions volunteers to help chaperone the different field trips planned.
