4 Intrductin MiLAB MiLAB is a pwerful sftware tl which, paired with einstein brand sensrs, lets yu cllect, display and analyze data, turning any Andrid device int a true Digital Lab. MiLAB's flexible and cmprehensive features let yu: 1. Cllect and display data in real-time. 2. Display data in graphs, tables, and meters. 3. Analyze data. 4. Exprt data as.csv r.mlb files. 5. And much mre! Installing the Sftware n an ios device Select the App Stre applicatin ( ) frm the Main Menu Within the App Stre, tap the Search bx. Type MiLAB int the search bx and then tap Dne Once the MiLAB sftware is listed, tap Get t dwnlad the applicatin The MiLAB sftware will begin dwnlading and installing autmatically. When the installatin is cmplete, a MiLAB ( ) icn will shw up n yur hme screen. Yu may need t enter yur Apple ID and passwrd t install the sftware NOTE: MiLAB is a free applicatin. Installing the Sftware n an Andrid device 4

5 Select the Play Stre applicatin ( ) frm the Andrid Main Menu. Within the Ggle Play Stre, tap the Search ( ) icn t pen the search windw. Type MiLAB int the search bx and then tap Dne. Once the MiLAB sftware is listed, tap n the applicatin t see mre details. Tap the Dwnlad buttn, then Accept & Dwnlad. NOTE: MiLAB is a free applicatin. The MiLAB sftware will begin dwnlading and installing n yur Andrid device. When the installatin is cmplete, a MiLAB ( ) icn will shw up n yur hme screen. Multilingual MiLAB MiLAB is available in the fllwing languages: English, Plish, Czech, Slvak, German, Hebrew, Chinese (Simplified), Russian, French, Ukrainian, Spanish, Japanese, Prtuguese and Italian. The Main Screen The MiLAB main screen is divided int 5 main sectins: 5

6 The Sensr Cntrl Panel The Sensr Cntrl Panel lets yu run and name experiments, cntrl sensrs and access previus experiments: 6

7 Running an Experiment Tap Sensr Select ( ) t select the desired sensrs. A checkmark will appear by the selected sensrs ( ). Select the desired Sample Rate and Duratin. 7

8 Tap the Run buttn ( ) t begin an experiment. As sn as it is tapped, MiLAB will begin recrding data frm all selected sensrs. It will cntinue cllecting data until the selected Duratin is reached. Tap Save ( ) n the File Menu t save yur experiment. Nte: After the Run buttn is selected it will turn int a Stp buttn ( ). Tapping Stp will stp the experiment befre the Duratin is reached. Nte: Yu must have at least ne sensr selected t run an experiment. If n sensrs are selected yu will receive the fllwing errr message: Legend View After running an experiment, the Sensr Cntrl Panel will switch t the Legend View: 8

9 Legend View gives yu access t: Data frm the sensrs used in the experiment. The Duratin, Rate, and number f Samples invlved in the experiment. Any Functins used t analyze the data (see Wrking with Functins fr mre details). Select the ( Select the ( ) icn t turn the plt lines f the different sensrs r Functins n and ff. )icn t turn the Legend View n and ff. The Experiment Name text bx cntains the name f the current experiment. By default the experiment will be named after the date and time it tk place. Yu can change the name f the experiment by tapping the Experiment Name text bx. This will bring up the keybard and allw yu t type in the name f yur chice. Tap Dne when yu ve finished. Sensr List The Sensr List lists the available sensrs. Yu may have t scrll dwn t view all available sensrs. 9

10 Selecting a Sensr Tap Sensr Select ( ) t select r deselect a sensr. A checkmark ( ) will indicate which sensr(s) is active. Nte: The clr f the Sensr Setup buttn indicates the clr f that sensr s plt line n a graph. While the einstein Tablet+ and the einstein LabMate + are equipped with built-in sensrs, MiLAB is cmpatible with ver 65 different external einstein sensrs. See Cnnecting an External Sensr fr details. Tap the Settings ( change the settings. ) icn next t the sensr s name t view details abut the sensr and, fr sme sensrs, Fr a detailed example f hw t set up a sensr, see Accelermeter. The Setup Menu The Setup Menu cntrls: The Duratin f an experiment The Sample Rate f an experiment The type f Measurement (Aut, Triggered, Manual r Event-Based) The x-axis Predictin Mde T access the Setup menu: Tap n the Setup icn Sensr Setup 10

11 Use the Sensr Setup buttn t access a number f ptins fr individual sensrs including setting the range, units and calibratin (depending n the sensr). T access Sensr Setup: Tap the Sensr Setup buttn This will bring up the Sensr Setup Windw. Different sensrs will ffer yu different ptins; 11

12 Duratin T set the experiment's Duratin: Select the sensrs t be used in the experiment Tap the Setup icn Flick the three scrlling wheels (Hurs, Minutes, Secnds) t scrll t the desired time Tap the Prceed icn Sample Rate T set the experiment's Sample Rate: Select the sensrs t be used in the experiment Tap n the Setup icn Flick the Rate scrlling wheels t set the desired Sample Rate (between 100,000 samples per secnd and nce per hur) 12

13 Tap the Prceed icn Aut Sampling Aut Sampling is the default measurement type. T use Aut Sampling: Select the sensrs t be used in the experiment (Optinal) Tap the Setup icn (if yu want t change the default Duratin r Sampling Rate) (Optinal) Tap the Prceed icn (if yu used the Setting menu) Tap the Run buttn Triggered Sampling Smetimes yu will nly want t start an experiment when a certain cnditin is met, fr example when a slutin reaches a certain temperature. This is called a Trigger. T set a Trigger: Select the sensrs t be used in the experiment Tap the Setup icn ( ) This will bring up the Trigger menu: 13

14 Tap the Trigger Sampling buttn Select which sensr t base the Trigger n (e.g. Temperature) Set the trigger t either Abve r Belw a value Use the numeric keybard t enter a value (e.g. Temperature abve 80 C) 14

15 Tap Prceed Nw data will nly be recrded when the cnditins are met. Manual Sampling Fr sme experiments yu will want t manually determine when t take a measurement. T cnduct Manual Sampling: Select the sensrs t be used in the experiment Tap the Setup icn Tap Manual Sampling Tap the Prceed icn (if yu used the Setting menu) Nte that the icn n the Run buttn has bee replaced with the Manual Sampling icn Whenever yu want t take a measurement tap the Run buttn When yu are finished measuring, tap and hld the Run buttn. Nte that a red circle will begin frming arund the Run buttn. When it is finished the measurements will stp 15

T use Event Based Time Measuring: Select the Phtgate sensr t be used in the experiment - Usually the Phtgate and/r the Smart Pulley Tap the Setup icn Tap Event Based Time Measuring Frm the Measurement drpdwn chse either Time, Vlume r Acceleratin (see details belw) Then chse t measure At One Gate r Between Gates r as Pendulum (see details belw) 16

There are varius methds f analyzing the different measurements. In sme measurements yu will be asked t enter the dimensin f the mving bdy, r the distance between tw Phtgates t allw fr the calculatin f velcity and acceleratin. The methds depend n the selected Measurement. These sensrs ften use flags fr mre accurate measurements. After chsing sme methds, yu will be able t enter the Width f the flag. By default MiLAB assumes yu are wrking with 3 cm flags. Time At ne gate Measures the time it takes the bdy t crss the Phtgate (e.g. between blcking and unblcking the infrared beam). Between gates Measures the time it takes the bdy t mve frm ne Phtgate t the secnd Phtgate (e.g. between blcking the first and blcking the secnd infrared beams). Pendulum Measures the time perid f an scillating bdy (e.g. the time interval between blcking the beam the first and third times). Velcity At ne gate Measures the time it takes the bdy t crss the Phtgate (e.g. between blcking and unblcking the infrared beam) and returns the velcity. Yu shuld enter the bdy s width. Between gates Measures the time it takes the bdy t mve frm ne Phtgate t the secnd Phtgate (e.g. between blcking the first and blcking the secnd infrared beams) and returns the average velcity. Yu shuld enter the distance between gates. 17

18 Acceleratin At ne gate A card with tw flags must be attached t the mving bdy. The Timing Wizard measures the crssing time intervals f the tw flags and returns the acceleratin. Yu shuld enter the flag's width. Between gates Measures the crssing time at the first gate, the time it takes the bdy t mve frm ne gate t the secnd gate and the crssing time at the secnd gate and returns the average acceleratin. Yu shuld enter the distance between the gates. Custmizing the x-axis By default MiLAB uses Time fr its x-axis. T change the x-axis: Select the sensrs t be used in the experiment Tap n the Setup icn Tap the x-axis field and select a sensr frm the drpdwn menu Tap the Prceed icn Predict Tl An imprtant step in many experiments is predicting the utcme befre running the experiment. In rder t use the predictin tl: Select the sensrs t be used in the experiment Tap the Setup icn Flick the Predict switch t On 18

19 Tap the Prceed icn Nte the Run icn has been replaced with the Predict icn Tap the Run buttn Use yur finger t draw yur predictin n the graph. Remember yu can scrll the graph if yu need a mre space fr yur predictin. Tap the Run buttn again t begin measuring Cnnecting an External Sensr The einstein Tablet+ and einstein LabMate+ nt nly cntain built-in sensrs but can accmmdate ver 65 different external sensrs. T cnnect an external sensr: Plug ne end f the mini-usb cable int the sensr and the ther int ne f the 4 prts labeled 1, 2 3, 4 n yur einstein device. The sensr shuld appear in the sensr list in the Sensr Cntrl Panel. It can then be selected r unselected just like the built-in sensrs. In sme cases, an external sensr may need t be identified manually. In these cases the external sensr will appear in the list as Empty 1 : Tap the Empty 1 bx and a list f sensrs will appear: 19

20 Tap the Radi buttn next t the crrect sensr and then tap utside the menu t return t the main screen. Nte: Sme lder sensrs may require an adaptr t cnnect t the einstein device. Setting the Duratin and Sample Rate fr an Experiment Experiment Setting lists the sampling Rate, Duratin and number f Samples fr the experiment. T change the Sensr Setup: Tap the Setup buttn ( ) next t the Sampling Rate. This will pen the Setup menu: 20

21 Use the Rate dial t adjust the sampling rate. Use the Duratin dials (hurs, minutes, secnds) t adjust the Duratin f the experiment. Sampling The Sampling Rate shuld be determined by the frequency f the phenmenn being sampled. Fr example, sund recrdings shuld be sampled at the highest sampling rate pssible, but changes in rm temperature may be measured at slwer rates such as nce per secnd r even slwer, depending n the speed f the expected changes. If the phenmenn is peridic, sample at a rate f at least twice the expected frequency. There is n such thing as ver-sampling. Fr extremely smth graphs, the Sampling Rate shuld be abut 20 times the expected frequency. Nte: Sampling at a rate slwer than the expected rate can cause frequency aliasing. In such a case, the graph will shw a frequency much lwer than expected. Accessing Previusly Run Experiments Once yu have run an experiment numbered buttns will appear n the Sensr Cntrl Panel: Tap ne f the numbered buttns t access the data frm that experiment These buttns nly prvide access t the data frm experiments run during the current sessin. See the Archive sectin t access data frm previus sessins. Calibratin There are three methds f calibrating sensrs within MiLAB - Set Zer Calibratin, One Pint Calibratin and Tw 21

22 Pint Calibratin. Sme sensrs can use Set Zer Calibratin in additin t either One r Tw Pint Calibratin Set Zer Calibratin Tap the Settings buttn next t the sensr s name This will bring up the Sensr Setup menu Flip the Set As Zer switch t set the current value as the zer r base value. One Pint Calibratin Tap the Settings buttn next t the sensr s name This will bring up the Sensr Setup menu 22

23 Tap Manual Calibratin t bring up the Calibratin menu Prepare t measure smething that has a knwn value (e.g. a slutin with a knwn ph f 7). Tap the bx marked Pint 1 Real Reading field and enter the knwn value Measure the substance and wait fr the readings t stabilize Tap the lck buttn Tap Calibrate 23

24 Tw Pint Calibratin Tap the Settings buttn next t the sensr s name This will bring up the Sensr Setup menu Tap Manual Calibratin t bring up the Calibratin menu 24

25 Prepare smething that has a knwn value (e.g. a slutin with a knwn ph f 7). Enter this knwn value in the Pint 1, Real Reading field Measure the substance and wait fr the readings t stabilize Tap the lck buttn Prepare smething else that has a knwn value. Enter this knwn value in the Pint 2, Real Reading field Measure the substance and wait fr the readings t stabilize Tap the lck buttn Tap Calibrate The Archive T access the Archive: Tap the Raise Archive buttn: This will pen the list f saved experiments: 25

26 Tap the experiment yu wuld like t access and its data will be shwn in the Data Display. Clsing the Archive T clse the Archive, tap Launcher: This will return yu t the Main menu. Searching the Archive T search the Archive: Tap the Search bx. This will bring up the keybard. Enter the name yu are lking fr and tap Dne. The results will appear in the Archive list. Tapping an experiment name will give yu access t that experiment, its graphs, tables, meters and ther details. Data Views Tlbar The Data Views Tlbar gives lets yu pen new graphs, tables, meters, maps and ntes: Nte: There must be ne view pen at all times. Returning t the Main Screen Tap Hme ( ) t return t the main screen. 26

27 Viewing Graphs Graphs are the mst cmmn methd f recrding and analyzing data frm sensrs. By default, experiments are run in Graph view. Tap Graph ( ) t tggle a graph n and ff in the Data Display (See Wrking with Graphs fr mre details) Plt Styles Graphs can be displayed in ne f three styles: Line, Plt Pints, Line and Plt Pints. By default graphs are displayed as a Line. T change this: Tap the Plt Style tab This will bring dwn the Plt Style menu Tap n the desired plt style Viewing Tables Table view displays a data in the frmat f a table. Tap Table ( ) t tggle a table n and ff in the Data Display. 27

28 Viewing Meters Meters are a simple, effective way t view data. Tap Meters ( ) t tggle the meters n and ff in the Data Display. Accessing Lcatin Services Fr sme experiments r ther prjects it s imprtant t nte yur lcatin. Lcatin Services als puts a high quality atlas at yur fingertips. Tap Lcatin Services ( ) t tggle a wrld map n and ff in the Data Display. Nte: Lcatin Services nly applies t tablet cmputers equipped with a GPS nt t LabMate r LabMate+. 28

29 See Wrking with the Lcatin View fr mre infrmatin. Taking Ntes It's ften useful t take ntes while running r analyzing an experiment. These ntes can later be used in reaching cnclusins and writing up lab reprts. T write a nte, tap Ntes ( ). This will bring up a blank nte: Tap again n the blank nte t bring up the keybard. Tap the Clse icn ( ) n the keybard when yu have finished writing. Nte that when yu save yur experiment, yur ntes will be saved as part f that experiment. Infrmatin Icn Tap the Inf ( ) icn t tggle the versin infrmatin n and ff in the Data Display. 29

30 Tap Help ( ) t tggle the help menus n and ff: Tap ne f the highlighted areas fr mre infrmatin n the functins in thse areas. Wrking with Multiple Views One f MiLAB s mst pwerful features is the ability t view data in multiple views at the same time. Yu can, in fact, simultaneusly view a graph, a table, meters, a nte and a map. T view data in multiple frmats: Tap the desired icns ne at a time. Tap the apprpriate icn again t clse that view. When multiple views are pen there will be ne main view and up t 4 views in the right-hand pane. T mve a view, tap the desired view and hld until the frame turns red. Then drag that view t the desired lcatin. Nte: One view must be active at all times. 30

31 Wrking with Graphs In general, graphs in MiLAB represent the data frm ne r mre sensrs alng the y (r vertical) axis vs. time alng the x (hrizntal) axis. By default, graphs in MiLAB aut scale which means yu can see the entire graph displayed. T zm in n ne part f the graph, tuch the screen and spread 2 fingers. T zm back ut pinch tw fingers tgether. Pinch t Zm ut Spread t Zm in Nte: Yu can als spread and pinch alng the x r y-axis t zm in r ut n these axes. Duble tap n the graph t return t the riginal aut scale graph. Yu can als mve the graph r axes by tuching and dragging them. Analyzing a Graph Analyzing the infrmatin cntained in a graph is ne f MiLAB s mst imprtant and pwerful functins. T analyze a graph: Run an Experiment. After running an experiment, the Functin menu will becme active. See Wrking with Functins fr mre details. In rder t use MiLAB s analysis functins yu must select at least ne pint n the graph this is knwn as a cursr. Many Functins require tw cursrs. Nte: If yu are using mre than ne sensr, bth cursrs must be n the same sensr s plt line. Wrking with Cursrs Yu can display up t tw cursrs n the graph simultaneusly. Use ne cursr t display the data at ne plt pint, t select a plt line r reveal a hidden y-axis. Use tw cursrs t analyze the data in the graph. T display the first cursr: In Graph view, tap any pint n a plt line. MiLAB will nw display the crdinate values. 31

32 T display the secnd cursr: Once the first cursr is placed, tap any pint n the same plt line. When there are 2 data pints selected; the differences between the 2 pints will appear at the bttm f the graph windw. dx refers t the value between the X axis f the 2 pints. dy refers t the value between the Y axis f the 2 pints. Mving cursrs: Tuch and hld a cursr then drag it left and right n a single plt line Tap the plt line f a different sensr t mve the cursr t that plt line. Remving cursrs: Tuch and hld a cursr, flick it quickly ff the screen in any directin. The cursr will disappear frm the plt line Wrking with Functins 32

33 Once yu have selected a cursr, this will activate the Functins menu. Tap Functins ( ) t access the list f Functins available t yu. Tuch ne f these t apply the Functin. Nte: In rder t run a Functin n a data set, the x-axis must shw prgressin. In any experiment where the x-axis represents time this is nt an issue but in certain cases the x-axis displays fluctuating data and in these cases yu wn't be able t run functins n the data. In the Sund v. Light graph the light levels n the x-axis fluctuate up and dwn s functins cannt be run n the data. 33

34 In the Magnetic Field v. Current graph the current level prgresses alng the x-axis s functins can be run n the data. List f Functins In the frmulas belw, G1 and G2 represent selected data sets r time series, and A, B and C are cnstants that yu can enter. Curve Fit: Shws a curve fit line based n the graph and tw selected pints. Can be expnential, linear, plynmial r pwer Abslute: Add: Derivative : Divide: Draws a line f the abslute values f a data set. Draws a line f the additin f tw data sets. Draws a line f the slpes f every three cnsecutive pints f a data set. Fr high recrding rates and a small t, this line may be very nisy, which is why smthing the data set is recmmended befre applying the derivative functin. Draws a line f the divisin f tw data sets Exp.: Draws a line f e raised t the pwer f a data set. Integral: Draws a line in which each pint is the discrete integral f all the preceding pints in a data set. Linear: Ln: Draws a line f linear displacement f a data set. This functin is useful when yu want t change the pint f rigin f a data set. Draws a line f the natural lgarithm f a data set. The argument must be psitive. 34

Sme functins, such as Subtract, require yu t cmpare 2 plt lines. T cmpare tw plt lines: Place tw cursrs n ne f the plt lines. Tap Functin ( ). Tuch the Setup buttn next t the desired functin. In the Setup menu G1 will be the plt line yu selected. Use the G2 drpdwn menu t select the plt line yu wuld like t cmpare it t. Tuch Okay. A new plt line will appear n the graph displaying the results. Wrking with Multiple sensrs MiLAB can wrk with multiple sensrs in rder t create sphisticated experiments. If there is nly 1 sensr selected, yu will see the y-axis n the left hand side listing the units fr the ne active sensr: 35

36 Tw Sensrs If there are 2 sensrs selected, yu will see 2 y-axes, ne n the left and ne n the right. The y-axis n the left represents the 1 st sensr, and the y-axis n the right represents the 2 nd sensr. Three r mre sensrs If there are 3 r mre sensrs selected yu will see 2 y-axes, ne n the left and ne n the right. The y-axis n the left represents the 1 st sensr, and the y-axis n the right represents a 2 nd sensr. T change the sensr displayed n the y-axis tap the plt line f the desired sensr and that sensr s name and measurement units will be displayed n ne f the y-axes. 36

37 Wrking with Lcatin View Mst tablet cmputers cntain a Glbal Psitining System (GPS) device which MiLAB can use as a lcatin sensr. The Lcatin sensr allws yu t recrd data such as Latitude, Lngitude, Altitude, Velcity, Bearing and Time. Nte: Lcatin view nly applies t tablet cmputers cntaining a GPS nt t LabMate r LabMate+ Nte: Yu must have yur Tablet s GPS active and accessible t MiLAB in rder t use the Lcatin sensr. Yu must als be in a lcatin where yur device is in cntact with a GPS satellite. Checking r unchecking the bx next t the sensr, will enable r disable the lcatin sensrs: Sensr is enabled Sensr is disabled When yu tap the Setup icn ( ), the Lcatin Setup windw will appear. Here yu can enable r disable Latitude, Lngitude, Altitude, Velcity, Bearing and Time measurements. 37

38 Use the bxes t enable r disable each ptin. Enabled Disabled When the Lcatin sensr is enabled, a lcatin icn ( ) will appear n the map shwing yur current lcatin. Tapping n the lcatin icn will display the Lcatin pint windw: T view the Lcatin sensr data n a map, tap the Lcatin Services icn ( ). Tap the Sensr Setup icn n the map t center n either yur current lcatin r t center n the rute assciated with the current experiment. This menu will als allw yu t switch between a satellite map and a regular (rad) map. Run an experiment with the Lcatin sensr active and map view n t display yur rute. Wrking With Vide Sync Vide Sync is a flexible tl allwing yu t add vide elements t yur experiments and even sync them t yur results. This wuld allw yu t film an intrductin t an experiment and then sync a recrding f yurself cnducting the experiment. Syncing the recrding allws yu t cmpare what was happening t yur experiment when certain results were achieved. Fr example, in an experiment t find the biling pint f a liquid, yu can take a vide recrding f the liquid while measuring the temperature and then afterwards g back and click n the graph t bserve the liquid at different temperatures. 38

39 T Vide Sync: Select Camera as ne f the sensrs. This will autmatically pen the Camera windw shwing yu what yu're filming. Tap Run t begin the experiment, the camera will start filming. Tap Stp r wait fr the Duratin t expire. The camera will stp recrding autmatically. Tap anywhere n the graph t set a plt pint, the camera windw will autmatically sync t that pint in the vide. Name the experiment using the keybard and then tap Dne. Tap Save ( ) t save yur experiment. Nte: If yu d nt name the experiment it will be saved and named after the time and date it was run but this will make it difficult t identify afterwards. In additin, when yu exit MiLAB yu will be prmpted t save yur wrk: Starting a New Experiment Tap New Experiment ( ). Yu will be prmpted t either Save, Clean r Cancel: Tap Save t save yur current experiment. Tap Clean t remve the current results. Tap Cancel t cancel starting a new experiment. Accelermeter Mst tablet cmputers are equipped with a built-in Accelermeter which MiLAB treats as a sensr.
