4 PRESENTATION: Fran Milano Copyright The original maker of a design is the only one who is legally allowed to share the pattern, photograph it, or put it in a show. The copyright lasts the life of the author, plus 70 years! WOW! The purchase of a pattern gives you the right to make it ONE time. If you want to enter it in a show, you should get permission from the original maker. Fran suggested we, as a guild, should discuss how to handle these guidelines for future quilt shows, etc. Martha Bradberry and Robin Yeargan: (mother/daughter) Martha (mom) grew up on a share cropper s farm in Chilton County, Alabama. Her father used to grow cotton. Martha remembers picking cotton as a young girl. Martha and Robin shared photos of working on the farm, picking and processing the cotton. They described what it was like to live and work on the farm. So interesting and enjoyable! Thank you Martha & Robin! Lynda Rygmyr - video Linda showed a video from Batik Man Films, Printed Fabric Production, which showed the process of turning cotton into the bolts of fabric that we get. Amazing to watch! You can look online to watch it if you missed it. Well worth seeing! Thanks Lynda! Quilts for Kids: Ellen announced that Q4K is donating a quilt to the Linda Massay Youth Home fundraiser. Ellen also read another note from Emma s House thanking Q4K for their support and generosity. Comforters: Meets the 1st Friday of each month at Bitterroot College. Rummage Sale is June 1 & 2 at Community Grange. Lunch will be served on Saturday for the workers. Sapphire Quilt Club Quilt show upcoming on July 13-14th Upcoming Programs: Lynda Rygmyr reported that March will be a presentation by Heritage Group. A Quilt University presentation & workshop will be upcoming in April. May presentation & workshop by Laurie Schmidt, Using the Squedge Ruler. Missoula Quilter s Guild is having Bonnie Hunter come in to do a presentation & workshop, September 27th-29th. Lynda has handouts if anyone is interested. See missoulaquiltersguild.org for more info. 5 ANNOUNCEMENTS From Fran Milnao We didn't have Marion Mendenhall handing out 'Beads' for Show n Tell in February, and there were several people who specifically mentioned they wanted to start earning their beads! We apologize and will call for a show of hands at the March meeting to get everyone caught up. There has been less participation in bringing Fat Quarters, and it s possible people just don't know what that is. We have new members (and forgetful old members, lol). Simply put: Bring a Fat Quarter each month and you are entered to win the 'pot'. Each month, you will receive an reminding you of the color of the month to bring. March green April purple May florals June quilter s choice Nametags: Wear your nametag or pay the piper! There is a $.25 fine if you don t wear your nametag. As someone who is trying to learn as many names as possible, it is really hard if folks don't have their nametag on! New members, if you need a pattern for making your nametag, please get one at the next meeting. SUNSHINE: Nancy Foisy is our 'Sunshine' contact. Members, please contact Nancy directly to send get well or condolence cards to members when appropriate ; foisy2@hotmail.com. Page 5

It s a great way to make friendships, do what you love and pass on that love to people who are comforted by your generosity. Any questions, please call Barbara Bayer or Judy LaSalle at BI-ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE Set-up: Friday June 1, 9 AM until????? Sale: Saturday June 2, 8 AM to 2 PM. 7 SPRING RETREAT aka Gathering of the Tribe Our annual Spring Retreat was called, "Gathering of the Tribe by our dear departed Jamie Grant, and in her honor and memory we would like to keep that name. As the Tribe Gathers this April 5,6,7,8, here are some reminders. NOTE: This year we are gathering at Glacier Camp on the westside of Flathead Lake. Glacier Presbyterian Center, O Neil Rd., Lakeside, MT Check-in time is 3 PM on Thursday, April 5th -- Check-out is Sunday, April 8th at 11AM. If you arrive too early on Thursday the 5th, you can just go jump in the lake! A substantial Dinner will be served at 6:00 PM on the 5th, 6th, 7th. A hearty Breakfast will be served at 9:30 AM on the 6th, 7th, and 8th. All meals prepared by the chef on premises. No lunches provided. Bring a snack to share if you d like. There is a refrigerator there for our use. Quilt Shops in the area have been asked to give us a discount, so ask when you visit them. You might get a nice discount, or a punch in the nose, so step back when you ask. There is a nice shop on Main Street in Polson, 2 shops in Kalispell, one in Whitefish. The one in Polson giving us 15%, the others 10%, but you must identify yourself as a Bitterroot Quilt Guild member retreating at Glacier Camp, BEFORE checkout. Bring your own cutting tools, new blades, rulers, cutting mat, and possibly an ironing mat/ cutting mat combo with your own iron to have at your own station. If you are using fusibles, Please do this sort of thing at your own station might keep you from being tarred and feathered. We had two irons, and two ironing board covers ruined at one of our retreats, cutting down on number available to others. So, please bring your own pressing mat, pressing sheets, iron, ironing mat/bd, and iron cleaner if you play with fusibles. You might want to do most of your cutting at home, to 1. Avoid mistakes when chatty comes up to chat, and 2. you won t plug up the 2 main cutting stations. (However, this is not a tar and feather offense neither the chatting or the plugging ) There are 40 of us, so be kind. Bring your instruction booklet/repair manual/trouble shooting guide for your Gertzfuger machine. If you break down, someone might be able to help, but only if you have the instructions that go with your Gertzfuger machine. Also bring extra bulbs, needles, feet, power cord, knee lifter etc that goes with your machine. My Bernina ones may not fit that Gertzfuger. Page 7
8 Remember to bring Your Own Reusable Water Bottle. We will not be handing out costly landfill-clogging, ocean-choking plastic water bottles. Wine, wine glass, side table, flashlight, matches, Ott lights, bulbs for Ott lights and machines, needles, pins, pin cushion, thread, thimble, bobbins, scissors, project instructions, patterns, material, seam ripper, rotary cutters, blades, specialty rulers/templates, glasses, Rxs, short ext cords, ext power strip, notebook, pen/pencil, jammies. PLEASE ~ NO PERFUMES!! Some are allergic! Looking forward to seeing you all there, Sharon sammcfro@gmail.com PROGRAMS March 28 - "All you ever wanted to know about feedsack quilts" with the Heritage Group April 25 - Jenny Clark from Kalispell, MT, a certified Quiltworx teacher, will give a Lecture and Workshop. Workshop will be on Quiltworx Water Wheel quilt. May 23 - Laurie Schmitt from Polson, MT, will give a Lecture and Workshop. The workshop will be on using the Squedge ruler and different designs you can do with it. May 24 - Workshop: Using the Squedge Ruler with Laurie Schmidt June 27 - TBD For more information, contact Lori Robbins (270) , ext. 207 Page 8
9 Workshop In April, Jenny Clark from Kalispell, MT, a certified Quiltworx teacher, will give a Lecture and Workshop. At the workshop, Jenny will teach us how to make the Quiltworx Water Wheel quilt. The Waterwheel pattern is a Cut Loose Press pattern, which is different than a traditional Quiltworx pattern in that it utilizes various tools and Charm Elements to create fast, fun, projects and layouts aimed at the beginner or a customer that simply wants to try out a fast project to learn a new technique or how to use a new tool. See the picture here patterns/waterwheel/ Workshop will be April 26th 9:00am-4:00pm, Corvallis United Methodist Church, lunch included. Cost $50, plus $27.90 for pattern and elements #18 & #19. You will receive supply list and cutting instructions upon signing up. If you are interested, let Lynda Rygmyr know via lyndary@osorail.com or call/text , ASAP (by March 20th.) We need to know how many plan to attend so we can order pattern. Page 9
