3 FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Dear Friends of the McGaw YMCA, 125 Years Strong. We hope you ll agree the YMCA in Evanston is, indeed, strong. What are the criteria for an institution to last 125 years or more? We asked ourselves that and decided: Strong Mission, Vision, and Values Strong Volunteers and Staff Strong Commitment to Understand and Meet Community Needs Strong Membership Strong Financial and Community Support Strong Generations of Kids, of Families, of Folks of All Ages More than anything, however, a lasting institution is made up of people, people who exemplify these criteria. The YMCA in Evanston has been blessed with thousands of people of commitment and conviction throughout its history. It s our great pleasure to share this report with so many examples of dedication, from the founding Boards of the Evanston and Emerson Street Branch YMCAs, to our current Board, committees, volunteers, and staff today. Starting well before our 125th Anniversary kick-off on January 23, 2010, our goals for this milestone year were to reconnect with many of those whose lives were impacted by the YMCA in Evanston, communicate our vision for the future, and celebrate our history with the community. And we have achieved these goals with strong community participation. Thank you to our Premier sponsors who are partnering with us throughout the Anniversary year, which will close on January 22, 2011 at The Crystal Ball in support of youth programs. Their generosity, support, and leadership has helped us move forward as we mark this commemorative year and look forward to the future. Please join us as we continue to celebrate 125 Years Strong. Sincerely, Vickie Burke Chair, Board of Directors William F. Geiger President/CEO To minimize our carbon footprint, we have limited the print edition of our Annual Report in favor of an online edition that celebrates our accomplishments in an interactive and responsible way. 1

4 THE YMCA OF EVANSTON Evanston YMCA Active Member s Ticket The Young Men s Christian Association of Evanston was founded in the 1880s in response to a public need for the care of the young men of the community. Differing from the usual social or athletic club, it aimed to reach the young man in his entirety and benefit him morally, intellectually, physically, and socially. On June 26, 1885, city church pastors and lay members met to discuss a local association and, after several months of planning, the YMCA of Evanston was duly formed on November 17, Meeting rooms were secured in the Rink Building at Davis Street and Chicago Avenue, and on March 16, 1886, William S. Mather was engaged as General Secretary. A women s auxiliary was organized in The Association prospered, moving to the Blocks Building at 1576 Sherman Avenue in The need for a permanent home led to a June 3, 1892 Board resolution to secure and build a site of suitable size to meet the growing public demand Evanston Directory 1905 Evanston Directory In March 1893, lots at Orrington Avenue were acquired for $27,000, and new headquarters designed by Holabird and Roche were built and opened on October 6, With the front building complete, work began on a Gymnasium, which opened November 28, 1899, followed by a Natatorium on July 1, Outgrowing this site, the YMCA built and opened 1000 Grove Street on January 1, Evanston YMCA founded with 130 members. 5 BACK (AND) TO THE FUTURE On Saturday, January 23, 2010, over 400 guests helped kick off the McGaw YMCA s 125th anniversary year. Entitled Back (and) to the Future, the gala event grossed $150,000 to benefit the YMCA s programs for the youth of the local community. Guests, dressed as everything from 1920s flappers to futuristic beings and everything in between, gave generously, danced, and reconnected across the decades. Michele Rogers greets Jerry Kreiman and Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl Bob & Patty Reece and Jan & Tom Hazlett 125th Anniversary Co-Chairs The event was chaired by Laurie Vree with the aid of over 40 volunteers. For five hours the Sebring-Lewis Center was given over to celebrating 125 years of building community and changing futures in Evanston. We are thrilled, said Laurie, that we had such a wonderful turnout of those who truly appreciate the many programs of the YMCA. Among the guests were: Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl; former Mayor Lorraine Morton; and the cochairs of the 125th anniversary year, Patty and Bob Reece and Jan and Tom Hazlett. Board Chair Vickie Burke and President/CEO Bill Geiger were there to personally welcome everyone. One of the highlights of the evening was the premier of The YMCA in Evanston: 125 Years Strong, a short film by Susan Hope Engel on the history of the McGaw YMCA and the Emerson Street Branch YMCA. The film featured interviews with people and families whose lives have been touched by the YMCAs in Evanston, in many cases across several generations. 6 AN UNFORGETTABLE EVENING Lonnie Barefield, Gerri Sizemore, and Bernice Cherry Dorothy Tate, Talley s niece, recalled how the closing of the Emerson Branch was a great shut-off for many black residents who didn t attend the newly integrated Evanston YMCA. Lucille Harris, Talley s other niece in attendance, said the Branch was an important place for African American youth in the community. I m very pleased they are honoring my uncle after all these years, Harris said. I thought maybe they d forgotten. The McGaw YMCA honored the 60-year legacy of the Emerson Street Branch YMCA on Saturday, May 22, The sold-out event, titled Unforgettable, took place in the Sebring-Lewis Center where 500 guests mingled over cocktails and placed bids in a silent auction before dining and dancing. The evening also celebrated the contributions made by organizers of the Emerson Branch, such as Ted Boyd and Rev. James Talley. Former Mayor Lorraine Morton (center) and other film interviewees The debut of Unforgettable: Memories of the Emerson Street Branch YMCA, a moving new film capturing an oral history of those impacted by the Branch, was the highlight of the night. Closing the Y rang the bell of the decline of a really strong black community, said Lonnie Wilson, an interviewee who was a pre-teen at the time the Branch closed. They made a knitted fabric that held us together, and my generation let the ball drop, he said. 7 EMERSON STREET BRANCH 1909 Though today the McGaw YMCA is one of the places in the community where residents of all races, ages, and professions come together, that was not always the case. In 1908, Rev. James R. Talley of People s Baptist Church was concerned that there were no viable, supervised recreational activities for African American youth in Evanston. After a request that they be admitted to the Central YMCA was rejected, Talley, along with other community and religious leaders, pursued the establishment of a new branch in Emerson Street Branch YMCA Father and Son Banquet Talley became the first Executive Secretary of the branch, which was built on Emerson Street in And with that, the Emerson Street Branch YMCA became an anchor for the social and civic life of Evanston s African American community Emerson Street Branch YMCA Throughout its existence, the Emerson Branch proved an integral part of the development of thousands of African American youth as well as other organizations and religious congregations. It provided room and board for African American students attending Northwestern University, a space for sports, swimming, dances, proms, and a multitude of memories lasting for decades. In 1963, during the era of desegregation in Evanston, the Grove Street YMCA integrated its facilities and in 1969, the Emerson Street Branch was closed. The closing of the facility was considered a mixed blessing by many; it symbolized the end of segregation, but it also brought to an end a remarkable community resource that bound together generations of Evanstonians. Gradually, old wounds over the closing of the Emerson Street Y continue to be healed, and in 1997 Robert Reece became the first African American Board Chair of the McGaw YMCA Cornerstone of Evanston YMCA laid at Maple and Grove Emerson Street Branch YMCA doubles in size. 19 dorm rooms for Northwestern University students Dedication of new 1000 Grove Street building. 8 BRILLIANTEEN Max Coker directs a scene from Wish You Were Here The 1952 and 1953 productions, Good News and Too Many Girls, were known as the Torch Division shows. When Seventeen was presented in 1954, Noel Hughes, then Business Secretary of the Evanston YMCA, kept all funds for the shows in a special account not used since World War II entitled Brilliantine. The nickname stuck and the program became commonly known as Torch Brilliantine. In 1952, Bill Harper, his wife Betty Harper, and Max Coker, saw few theatrical experiences open to high school students in the Evanston community. To address this need, they designed a program to give students a chance to perform in plays and musical productions regardless of cast size or level of talent, emphasizing participation over competition. The program was named after the Torch Division high school program for juniors Cast of Li L Abner Over time, the word Torch was dropped and the present day spelling of Brillianteen was introduced, remaining the current name of the youth theater program Showbook for Brigadoon The 25 performers in the first ever Brillianteen show premiered in the basement of 1000 Grove Street in what is now the Beidler Drop-In Center. Participation has since grown ten-fold, regularly featuring over 200 performers and 50 crew members. 9 BRILLIANTEEN ALUMNI REVUE Bill Geiger & Anne Gilford Little Mary Sunshine 1970 Saturday, March 13, 2010, the McGaw YMCA presented its Brillianteen Alumni Revue featuring performers from the past 59 years reprising their roles in an all-star line-up. Headliners included Nancy Gustafson, an internationally acclaimed opera singer who got her start in the 1973 Brillianteen production Brigadoon, performing with guest Michael DeVries from the Broadway cast of Wicked. President/CEO Bill Geiger calls the Brillianteen program one of the Y s proudest efforts, and the opportunity to bring together so many alumni from past productions is a perfect way to celebrate. Brillianteen is much more than the students on the stage singing and dancing their hearts out. They run the lights, write press releases, fundraise it s an experience very few will ever forget. An alum himself, Bill joined Anne Gilford, director of the Alumni Revue, onstage as Big Jim Warrington and Little Mary from the 1970 production of Little Mary Sunshine. 10 HEALTHY KIDS DAY Nearly 500 children, parents, grandparents, and staff filled the Sebring-Lewis Center on April 17 for Healthy Kids Day, an event that aims to get kids and families excited about health and well-being. The annual event, which is free and open to everyone in the community, featured activities and demonstrations for all ages. A tug of war, bounce castle, Zumba classes, tumbling, and a bike challenge were all part of the fun. Bike Challenge Drawing a long line of future mountaineers, the climbing tower proved a magnet for many kids. The GaGa pit, a Camp Echo favorite and the next evolution of dodgeball, was also filled throughout the day. Evanston s Noodles & Company and the pomegranate tea from Argo Tea were popular stops for healthy snacks during the event, as was the make-it-yourself granola station so budding chefs could experiment with all sorts of ingredients. BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois and NorthShore University HealthSystem served as sponsors for this year s event in honor of McGaw s 125th Anniversary celebrations. Healthy Kids Day is a key event in the implementation of Activate America, the Y s initiative to partner with the community in addressing the national problem of childhood obesity and to support health-seekers. Promoting these active living goals encouraged by the McGaw YMCA, Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl declared April Healthy Kids Week in Evanston. 11 ADVENTURE GUIDES Kickapoo Tribe Indian Guides After World War II, the need to serve the whole family and to support young girls in their personal growth nurtured the development of other parent-child programs. Father-daughter groups, called Y-Indian Princesses, emerged in the Fresno YMCA of California in In 1960, Doug Monahan brought Indian Guides to the Emerson Street Branch and 1000 Grove Street building of the Evanston YMCA. In 1971, he expanded the program by adding Indian Princesses. Adventure Guides is an evolution of the original YMCA parent-child program called Indian Guides. The father and son Y-Indian Guide program was developed in 1926 to support a father s vital family role as teacher, counselor, and friend to his son. Harold S. Keltner, a YMCA director in St. Louis, initiated this program around a blazing campfire while on a hunting trip in Canada with his friend, Joe Friday, an Ojibwa Indian Indian Princesses Parade 2008 Adventure Guides Lakefront Campout One of the strengths of YMCAs both locally and nationally is that they have adapted and responded to societal changes in order to remain relevant and useful to their communities. From late 2000 to mid 2003 YMCA staff and volunteers from across the country met on several occasions to craft a parent-child program that had a broader appeal, and in 2005, YMCA Adventure Guides was launched in Evanston Doug Monahan starts Indian Guides program at Emerson Street Branch and Evanston YMCAs First African American Board members elected to Evanston YMCA Men s Club sponsors drive for Chicago families displaced by riots following Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination First Illinois City Youth and Government program founded at Evanston YMCA. 9

12 Y CLUBS s Y Club Members In the 40s and 50s Y Clubs were highly structured but distinctly social. Members were invited to join each club, charter ceremonies were held, and regular meetings took place with positions ranging from President to Treasurer and Chaplain to Secretary. Many clubs began in middle school and stayed together through high school. True to the notion of Spirit, Mind, and Body, Y Clubs also competed in sports, swimming, drama, and fundraising along with other activities. Started by Evanston YMCA Youth Work Secretary Clarence Red Moser in 1929, the Y Clubs program grew out of a long tradition of activities for boys and girls from the 4th grade to high school. Known by such names as Hi-Y, Junior Tri-Hi-Y, and Trailblazers, the club program has provided countless hours of fun and opportunities for the youth of our community and beyond. 1940s Emerson Street Branch YMCA Hi-Y Club 1986 Members of the (Walter) Payton Club As youth became increasingly specialized at earlier ages, the general nature and formal structure of the club program shifted in the early 90s to its present format. But for current Y Club middle schoolers and old timers alike, fond memories of hanging out at the Y after school is a highlight of their youth. Many clubs still enjoy the bonds of friendship and camaraderie decades after graduating from high school, and thousands continue to share stories of their Y Club days Emerson Street Branch YMCA closed. 13 ALL Y CLUB REUNION On July 2nd, nearly 100 Y Club alumni gathered at the McGaw YMCA to dine, dance, and reminisce with friends. Some traveled a great distance, having not been back to the Y for 30 or 40 years. Others had stayed in the area, keeping close ties to the Y, and continuing to participate as adults, parents, and grandparents. Dr. Dick Fischl, a well-known Evanstonian, is just one of those Y Club alums with decades of Y memories. Board Member Casey Lewis Varela (Pebbles 1992) with 1945 Jefferson Club alums Bill Tramel (Event Committee) and Dick Fischl As a boy in 1931, Dick met Johnny Weissmuller, the famed Olympic swimmer who was touring the country giving swim shows. After he swam 4 laps in the Y s pool on one breath, Dick got to ride on his shoulders. In 1932, Weissmuller would star in Tarzan The Ape Man and become the best know actor to play the role. Can you imagine the thrill, says Dick, for a little boy to ride on Tarzan s shoulders? Former staff were also present, such as Carolyn Kent, the Y s first female Aquatics Director, and Zenol Moore, who pioneered Women and Girls programming for an impressive 30 years, from 1955 to Special thanks to Y Club Committee member Justin Salk and his corporate partnerships for supporting the All Y Club Reunion, along with providing great food from Justin s Bar in Chicago. Alumni also sampled other Y Club food staples from their youth, such as Gigio s Pizza and World s Finest Chocolate. 14 A BRENNER RUNS THROUGH IT Jon Brenner's lifelong YMCA affiliation began as a youth with swim and movement classes at the Hyde Park YMCA. As he grew older, he attended Camp Martin Johnson in the 60s and 70s in Northern Michigan, which nurtured his love of canoeing, camping, and other outdoor pursuits. Later, while serving as Aquatics Director and swim team coach at the Evanston YMCA, he happened upon the chance to bring his tripping skills to Camp Echo. Jon Brenner He joined the Echo staff in 1982, where he expanded and coordinated the Adventure Trip program over the next nine years. Of the many Camp Echo Adventure Trips Jon created, inspired, and led, his favorite was always the Trailblazers Trip. It was also at Echo that he met Terry Hansen, whom he later married at camp in September Jon and Terry moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin in September 1991 when Jon was hired to coach the WAVE swim team at the La Crosse YMCA. Sadly, Jon passed away on January 31, 2010 after an 18-month battle with brain cancer. Recognizing Jon s role in the history of Camp Echo Adventure Trips and his special love for the Trailblazers Trip, a group of former trip guides and friends of Camp Echo established and provided seed funding for a scholarship endowment in his name: A Brenner Runs Through It. The purpose of A Brenner Runs Through It is to award two Trailblazer scholarships annually to one boy and one girl. Trailblazers is an entry-level trip for 7th and 8th graders where separate groups of 12 girls and 12 boys canoe for three days on the Big Two Hearted River and hike for three days on the North Country Trail. The hope is that their participation in this trip will start them down the trail of even more adventure trips a fitting tribute to Jon s memory Olympic Champion Bart Connor gives demo where he started at the YMCA First female Board Chair Luann Bleveans First Jewish and second female Board Chair Alice Kreiman Project SOAR program begins mentoring youth

15 CAMP ECHO 1899 Summer camping for the Evanston YMCA began in 1899 when Evanston boys first attended Camp Hope on the shores of Phantom Lake, Wisconsin along with boys from the Milwaukee YMCA. In 1900, a separate session of Camp Hope was set aside for boys from Evanston. Two years later, the Evanston YMCA began its own camp at Black Lake, Michigan and the search for a permanent camp site Portage Lake After three summers on Black Lake, the camp moved to White Lake, Michigan in 1905, to Bear Lake, Michigan in 1906, and to Portage Lake in Onekama, Michigan in In the ensuing years the camp shared a site with the Chicago YMCA, and then moved to Diamond Lake. In the early 1920s, YMCA Board Member and Boys Work Committee chairman F. P. Davis, Sr., Boys Work Secretary Freeman, General Secretary James Bixby, and Chester Cook, Board and Committee member, began looking for a permanent site. After rejecting several sites, they arrived at the south end of Ryerson / Long Lake and were electrified by what they saw a beautiful lake with a peninsula in the middle cleared except for trees around the edge and a real forest of trees in the distance. They negotiated the purchase of the property and Camp Echo officially opened on the site in Camp Echo Boys Leaving For Trip Camp Echo has a life-long impact on those who attend, with campers returning year after year for swimming, sports, and outdoor fun. Generations now share the thrill of yelling ECHO! out over the lake at the closing campfire and seeing the burning triangle rise on the far shore. 16 CHILDREN S CENTER 1995 The McGaw YMCA Children s Center grew out of a long progression of part-time early childhood and youth development programs at the Evanston YMCA. The desire to combine healthy living, education, and physical activity succeeded thanks to the efforts of community volunteers, parents, and retired teachers wanting to work with their own children and the youth of the Evanston community Sarah Opdycke leads a class for toddlers Accredited since 2006 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the McGaw YMCA Children s Center is the largest single-site early childhood provider in Cook County. The Center employs 33 full-time and 51 part-time staff members who, reflecting the diversity of our community, speak more than 17 different languages. The Center also serves as a preferred provider to Northwestern University parents, offering discounted memberships, full-day infant and toddler care, preschool for children 2-5 years, and after school care. 1980s Mommy and Me class led by Anne Gilford The Center moved to its present location at 1420 Maple Avenue in 1995, and now boasts 19 classrooms, an art room, a library and media center, auditorium, and both indoor and outdoor playgrounds. 17 125TH ANNUAL MEETING Volunteer Awardees Tom & Jan Hazlett and Bob & Patty Reece On June 29, 2010, the McGaw YMCA held its 125th Annual Meeting of the Members of the Association. In addition to reporting on the past fiscal year and the 125th Anniversary, electing two new Board members, and honoring volunteers, this year s meeting was held at the Children s Center to celebrate its achievements as well as the central role youth development has played throughout the history of the YMCA in Evanston. Board Chair Vickie Burke shared her personal story of the inception and growth of early childhood programs as introduction to Sonja Coster, Vice President of Children, Youth, and Family Services. Sonja was joined by Tina Kalil, a Part Day Preschool Parent Advisory Group member, and CJ Jones, a School s Out Parent Advisory Group member, to talk about the inspirational impact the Children s Center and its programs have had on their families and the Evanston community. The association membership unanimously elected Board candidates Pam James, who has been involved with the Y for 16 years through the Children s Center and Youth Sports programs, and Elida Graves, who is currently President of the Food Assistance Center of Evanston. Seven volunteer awards were presented at the close of the evening to: Jan and Tom Hazlett and Bob and Patty Pam James, Elida Graves, and Board Chair Vickie Burke Reece for their inspirational leadership as 125th Anniversary Co-Chairs; John Peterson for his years of service as Board Chair, donor, and leader in developing the McGaw YMCA s strategic vision; Roderick Vernon for his selfless community work and role on the Residence Committee; John Cleave for his crucial support of the MYST swim team; Jennifer Khan, for creating the beautiful garden at the Children s Center; Gretchen Quinn for volunteer teaching at the Children s Center; and Sarah Flax for her tireless work with Brillianteen New vision statement: We will welcome everyone; inspire, activate, and impact all in spirit, mind, and body First Annual Youth Triathlon held in partnership with Northwestern University th Anniversary. 18 YOUTH TRIATHLON In July 2009, families from across the North Shore headed to Northwestern University s Evanston campus at the crack of dawn to see over 175 young athletes swim, bike, and run in the McGaw YMCA s first annual Youth Triathlon. Now in its second year in 2010, the event gives kids of all athletic abilities a positive introduction to multi-sport racing and a course officially sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Keeping pace on the bike course Event distances are selected to be demanding, but achievable, for the various age groups of racers (5-7 years, 8-10 years, and years). Races are run in heats in the morning and followed by post-race festivities, including games and a moon bounce. The event is another part of the McGaw YMCA s commitment to the Activate America initiative, a community partnership to improve health and wellbeing by supporting healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility across Evanston and the North Shore. Splash and Dash participant urged on In addition to Northwestern University serving as the principal event partner, the 2010 event was generously supported by the Runner s Edge, Kraft Foods, Chicago Athlete Magazine, Turin Bicycle, Duxler Complete Auto Care, Evanston Running Club, MecaFresh, Noodles & Company, and the Wellness Revolution. 19 RESIDENT MEMBER PROGRAM 1929 The McGaw YMCA Resident Member Program is the only single room occupancy program in Evanston and provides safe, affordable housing for low-income men. As full members of our Association, all residents can benefit from our fitness and recreation facilities and programs Residence Room at the 1000 Grove Street building Until the late 50s, most YMCAs in the United States were built with hotel-like residence or dormitory rooms. This need figured prominently in the expansion of the Emerson Street Branch YMCA in 1929 and the new 1000 Grove Street building in These rooms became a part of American culture, known as an inexpensive and safe place for a visitor to stay in an unfamiliar city. In 1940, there were about 100,000 rooms at YMCAs across the country, more than any hotel chain. By 2006, however, YMCAs with residences became relatively rare, but the Evanston YMCA Resident Member Program is still a strong part of our commitment to welcoming all in our community Annual Resident Member Christmas Dinner 1963 Dormitory Room at the Emerson Street Branch YMCA Many resident members are employed in our Member Relations and Building Services departments. Many also volunteer at the Y as well as other organizations in the Evanston area. We continued this initiative and have extended complimentary memberships to 22 more families and adults this year. As part of efforts to satisfy and retain members, we were able to increase our overall satisfaction rating of excellent by 10% this year as reported through our annual Member Satisfaction survey. This increase has resulted in an average member retention rate of 71% which exceeds the bench mark set forth by YMCA of the USA for independent Y s. We donated 74 memberships during the 2010 fiscal year to local businesses and charities to use in silent auctions or events, which included 4 youth memberships donated to Walker School for their character award recipients. 2,350 2,300 2,250 2,200 2,150 2,100 2,050 2,000 1,950 1,900 11,600 11,400 11,200 11,000 10,800 10,600 10,400 10,200 10,000 9,800 9,600 Family Memberships 2,300 2,185 2,097 2,118 2, Individual Members (Head Count) 11,458 10,863 10,341 10,420 10,

21 HEALTH AND WELLNESS To better meet the needs of health and well-being seekers, we continued in 2010 to expand the resources in our Health and Wellness Center. We purchased additional equipment in response to member feedback, and invested in additional small equipment to expand workout options for members. All staff have been trained to identify the needs of a health seeker and have transformed the way we look at our training options to create more of a partnership with our members. As a result, many new members took advantage of Personal Training in 2010 to help them meet their wellness goals. We enhanced the way we stay connected and support health seekers with their goals by offering 3 levels of free Member Orientation. We also increased the number of free meetings with wellness staff from one to four, which has increased connectedness with staff and other members. I'm thrilled with the YMCA. The indoor pools, the whirlpool, sauna, the friendly staff, classes for days, and classes that start early. Everything is in one place and, in my experience, it's a lot friendlier and more welcoming than other places family oriented with no pretense. I'm amazed when I hear about all the weight I ve lifted since I joined 900,000 pounds! Sharon Robinson, Member Our free, annual events to promote the lifelong practice of healthy lifestyles such as America on the Move week and the International Family Festival continued to engage hundreds of community members of all ages. Healthy Kids Day was a record success in 2010 with over 475 kids, parents, and individuals from the community in attendance. With loads of fun activities, family wellness incentives, and a climbing tower, we helped educate and support families and community members in their health and well-being needs. Our Group Exercise course schedule continued to grow with over 80 free classes last year for all health and well-being seekers. We also began offering quarterly Jams four half-hour classes open to members and community participants on Friday evenings to sample such activities as Yoga, Zumba, Cardio Mix, and Cardio Kickboxing. These jams have been a huge success and are helping us design and offer new classes for our members. Our first Family Jam to encourage families to work out together was also a great success with more than 50 family members in attendance. RESIDENT MEMBER PROGRAM Our Resident Member Program served 276 men and awarded more than $78,000 in fee assistance and subsidies an 82% increase from the prior fiscal year. Over 89% of our 172 accommodations remained consistently occupied in We continued to organize social events, holiday celebrations, and community outings for resident members. We also strengthened relationships with many local organizations to enhance the services available to resident members. Some key partners include Evanston s Illinois WorkNet Center, Connections for the Homeless, PEER Services, Housing Options for the Mentally Ill, and Trilogy. My life just spiraled out of control for me. But at that point in time, I was able to move into the YMCA, so slowly my life started getting back on track. Working here, living here, the McGaw YMCA is home. It s not a room, it s home. Rich, Resident Member 19

22 PROGRAM OUTCOMES CAMP ECHO In 2010, our residential camp in Fremont, Michigan, offered over 25 different programs to participants of all ages. Off-season programs included Outdoor Education for school groups in May and September and a fall Adult Getaway Weekend. Last summer, Camp Echo served over 1,000 different participants in our youth camps, as well as nearly 500 adults and children in our family camps representing over 100 families. Increased contributions to Camp Echo programs allowed us to offer $122,000 in camp fee assistance to children, teens, and families, and offset an additional $220,000 in expenses associated with other YMCA youth programs. 192 volunteers donated 2,059 hours to Camp Echo throughout the year. Volunteers attended committee meetings, planned fundraising events, greeted parents and campers at the buses, roofed buildings, pulled out piers, and so much more. This was my 8 year old daughter s first time at Camp Echo. The experience was great a lot of fun but with an important focus on inclusion and core values. My normally shy camper made new friends, tried a variety of activities, and despite our concerns did not show an inkling of homesickness. I can already see that this will be a childhood long commitment and Camp Echo will play a fundamental role in shaping the person she becomes. Letter from a Camp Echo 2010 Camper Parent AQUATICS Teaching Evanston and the North Shore to swim remains a top priority for our association. Thanks in part to $18,000 in donor-supported fee assistance for our swim lesson program, more than 1,000 Evanston and North Shore residents of all ages improved their swimming abilities. We also partnered with such organizations as The Salvation Army, Family Focus, and Y.O.U. to provide swim lessons for their participants. Another focus of our aquatics programs is fostering an appreciation for athletic training and competition in the young people of our community. Our swim team, MYST, brought together over 200 swimmers ages 5 to 18 from 130 families. Training six days a week throughout the school year, they competed in local, state, and national swim events. Five members of MYST set eight team records in April 2010 at the 87th YMCA Short Course National Championships. It's more than just a meet, it's a real unique experience for the kids mixing fun, camaraderie, and high level competition. Craig Strong, Competitive Aquatics Manager and Head Coach The second McGaw YMCA Youth Triathlon brought a unique athletic experience to young athletes and beginners alike in July of 2010, attracting 250 participants and deepening our outreach efforts to the greater Evanston community. Through the spring and summer months, we had 50 youth participate in a new Youth Triathlon Training program to help prepare them for the Triathlon in July. Our aquatics staff does not work alone in building strong swimmers and teammates. Over 80 community volunteers and numerous partnering organizations helped realize these successes. 20

23 YOUTH AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT Our Children s Center served a total of 511 children age 6 weeks through grade 5 in 2010, with enrollment at or over capacity for all our programs including 113% capacity for Camp WaNaGo. We awarded 31% of our children some level of fee assistance, totaling over $310,000. Our net operating position has also grown steadily each year, from a deficit of $160,071 in 2005 to a record surplus of $350,000 in I asked, Genesis, what do you like most about the Y? She said to me, We do cool stuff here. I got to be in a play. I got to narrate a hockey game on a video. And I said, Genesis, what is it that you think I like? She said, That s easy, Grandma. You like a place where you know I m safe and I can have fun. Genesis-Grandma CJ Jones, School s Out Parent Advisory Group More than 1,300 fathers and children from over 780 families across Evanston and the North Shore participated in Adventure Guides, which organizes activities and campouts to bring dads together with their kids in grades 1-3. Our local Summer Adventure Club programs involved 42 participants from grades 6-8 and awarded $17,379 in fee assistance. Our three Learning Centers provided free or low-cost supplemental literacy and tutoring services to 93 local children, with over 40 volunteers donating nearly 3,300 hours. Our Project SOAR mentoring program paired 74 adult volunteers, including 63 Northwestern University students, in a year-long mentoring relationship with an Evanston-area youth in grades 4-8. Y Clubs, our after-school youth program, engaged 21 middle school students and awarded $6,057 in fee assistance. Our 59th annual Brillianteen musical production, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, involved 136 cast members and 91 crew members from local high school students as well as 200 adult community volunteers donating over 5,000 hours. Brillianteen, Jr., our fall theater program for middle school students, presented a student authored and produced talent show with the support of staff, a student intern, and 3 community adults volunteering their artistic skills and over 200 hours to the project. I never thought I would do theater or even Brillianteen. It changed my self-esteem and increased my friendships at school. I was surprised to get the role of Jacob and play the father of 12 colorful brothers. I m not even a singer, but they gave me the chance to showcase myself in front of a thousand some people. It was the best experience. Charles Jefferson, ETHS Class of 2010 The McGaw YMCA provided over $1.34 million in fee assistance and subsidies to make programs and services affordable to all. 21
