Learning Target: Students will be able to clarify misunderstandings from chapters 1-11, make predictions for part two, and ask remaining questions from part one.
Exit Ticket: 3: What are THREE things that are more clear about the plot or characters after today? 2: What are TWO predictions that you have for part two? 1: What is ONE question you still have about the book?
Atticus: Father of Jem and Scout Jem: Older brother, deeply affected by the happenings in town, starts to think critically about them Scout: Narrator, thinks with her fists instead of her head Tom Robinson: Man accused of raping a white woman Miss Maudie: Voice of reason within the town Main Characters of Maycomb Boo Radley: Town recluse, victim of many rumors, begins to reach out to Jem and Scout
Map of Maycomb
Chapter 8 Key Points 1. A snowstorm in Maycomb--they make a snowman to look like Mr. Avery, Atticus makes them adapt it because it is so close 2. Miss Maudie's house is on fire 3. Someone drapes the blanket over Scout (Boo) 4. Miss Maudie is cheerful despite losing her house
Student Questions Part 1 1. Mrs. Dubose a. Why is she so mean? 2. Miss Caroline a. Why does Mrs. Caroline scream when a student walked in? 3. Mrs. Maudie a. What was the reason her house burned down? b. What is Miss Maudie's reaction when her house burned down? What does this tell us about her? 4. Miss Stephanie Crawford 5. At school, why does Scout get into a fight with Cecil Jacobs? 6. Who is the most influential person in Francis life? How do you know?
Student Questions Part 1: Boo Radley 1. Why can t Boo Radley leave his house? Who is he, why is he considered a phantom? 2. Will Boo Radley ever get in touch with the kids? 3. Why does Mr. Radley take away all Boo is trying to do? 4. Why do the kids think it is a good idea to mess with Boo Radley? 5. Why does everyone care so much about the Radleys? Why are people afraid of them? 6. Does Scout live near Boo? 7. Did Boo Radley really come out and give them the blanket? 8. Who saw Boo Radley at the fire scene?
Mockingbirds don t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don t eat up people s gardens, don t nest in corncribs, they don t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That s why it s a sin to kill a mockingbird (Lee 90). "Atticus said to Jem one day, 'I'd rather you shoot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something
Chapter 9 Key Points 1. Scout starts a fight with Cecil Jacobs (n word lover) 2. Tom Robinson trial is introduced 3. Christmastime with Uncle Jack--cursing punishment for Scout 4. Scout should act more like a lady (Aunt Alexandra) 5. Francis calls Atticus an n-word lover, Scout punches him 6. Scout overhears Uncle Jack and Atticus talking in the kitchen
Student Questions Part 2: Atticus 1. Who is Atticus and what does he do? 2. At the beginning of chapter 10, Scout is ashamed of Atticus; list his faults as she sees them. 3. Why was it important to shoot the dog? What animal do they really mean when they are talking about the dog? 4. What does one shot Finch mean? 5. Why didn t Atticus want Jem and Scout to know about his shooting? 6. Was the dog actually rabid? 7. Why is Atticus so scared to shoot a gun? Did something happen to him when he was a child? 8. What was Atticus talking about when he talked to Uncle Jack? 9. Who is Atticus defending? 10. Why is Atticus so protective over the kids wanting to know more about the Radleys? 11. Is there a chance Atticus could win his case because he is going against the Ewells? 12. According to Atticus, why does he have to take this particular case?
I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away It was the first time I ever walked away from a fight. Somehow, if I fought Cecil I would let Atticus down (Lee 76-77). -Cecil Jacobs Scout, you ll get in trouble if you go around saying things like that. You want to grow up to be a lady, don t you? (Lee 79). -Uncle Jack I guess it ain t your fault if Uncle Atticus is a n----- lover besides, but I m here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family (Lee 83). -Francis Your father s no better than the n------s and trash he works for (Lee 102). -Mrs. Dubose
Let this cup pass from you, eh? Right. But do you think I could face my children otherwise? You know what s going to happen as well as I do, Jack, and I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through it without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb s usual disease. Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don t pretend to understand I just hope that Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town. I hope they trust me enough...jean Louise? (Lee 117).
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it (Lee 30).
"'A lady?'jem raised his head. His face was scarlet. 'After all those things she said about you, a lady?' Atticus said, 'She was. She had her own views about things, a lot different from mine, maybe...son, I told you that if you hadn't lost your head I'd have made you go read to her. I wanted you to see something about her.- I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.'" In this quote, Atticus explains to the children why he considers Mrs. Dubose to be a "great lady" and a brave person. How does this fit his explanation of why he is defending Tom Robinson?
Exit Ticket: 3: What are THREE things that are more clear about the plot or characters after today? 2: What are TWO predictions that you have for part two? 1: What is ONE question you still have about the book?
Reminders: 1. Quiz tomorrow Chapters Quotes Due THURSDAY 3. Read Chapter 12 for Wednesday
