PAGE 4 TE REO CONVENOR S MESSAGE: IMPORTANT NOTICES PLEASE READ! Kia ora koutou katoa, Sharing your past for the future Tohatohatia nga wa o mua ki tena te wa a muri ake nei, is the whakatuaki for the upcoming Family History Fair being held in Hamilton July 17 th and 18 th I have been actively engaged on the committee of the NZSG New Zealand Family History Fair and it has been an interesting pathway for Maori involvement in whakapapa and genealogical research and securing Maori values in research alongside New Zealand s European perspectives of genealogy and meetings. The support to Maori on this committee has been invaluable for the Maori Interest group. The 2 nd of March saw a presentation at the Papakura Branch of NZSG where I was invited to present the Maori Interest Group and to talk about what we actually do, there was an excellent turn out of a delightful group of people and I must say that I was infused by their spirit and interesting topics of their respective research, all in all it was a fun evening with the Maori dimension being warmly welcomed with the opportunity for the Maori Interest Group committee assisting others with their research. The 20 th March meeting was with the Maori Interest group holding a meeting at the offices of the Papatoetoe branch of NZSG with the aim to set up a Auckland Sub group of MIG, this was approved in principle and it was agreed that we will be starting small and slowly build up the group from there. Our Kaumatua Sonny Rauwhero was delighted with the meeting and the open discussions that we had with a round table forum, three people responded from the advertisement in the local Courier and Lorraine and I will be organising meetings for them at the NZSG branch in Panmure and expanding the group where we can. There is certainly interest in the community, however it is a community like the rest of New Zealand geared to sports and events and more so with those who have young families, yet are interested to tracing their whakapapa, however where there is a way there is a will. A core value is that we are a spiritual people and the values vary from mauri to wairua to mana and to tapu, all are spiritual concepts which guide our disciplines and enhances our whanau and hapu connections with and to each other. It is these values (Continued on page 5)

TE REO PAGE 5 (Continued from page 4) that turn our hearts to our tipuna and which drives us to seek out our family origins and connections and the aroha that encompasses our memory of loved ones passed. A Hawaiian whakatauki that ties into whakapapa: Ike aku, ike mai, kokua aku kokua mai: pela iho la ka nohana ohana Recognise others, be recognised, help others, be helped; such is a family relationship. In closing, we the Maori Interest group are open to all individuals to assist and help in the research of whakapapa and family connections to whanau, hapu and iwi and we will look forward to meeting and working with all parties in gainful research and planning. Kati ake nei. Owen ORMSBY Convenor May 2010 MIG AGM Saturday 17 th July 2010 With grateful thanks to Richard STEDMAN Editor NZG

PAGE 6 TE REO EDITOR S MESSAGE: Kia Ora, Owen s report on the previous page superbly details the group s activities in recent months and also our hopes for the future. So I will spare you all my usual incoherent ramblings at this time and dedicate a bit more space for newsletter content. Except to remind you all that the group s AGM is fast approaching, so for those not attending our meeting can you please have your AGM Nomination and/or Proxy Voting forms (including any items for the Agenda) with our Secretary by the 20 th June Our AGM is scheduled for Saturday 17 th July 2010 at the Kingsgate Hotel, Te Rapa between 8:45 10:00am. As usual, I need your help with photos so please don t forget to take your camera and also send me a few words for the newsletter and website! Many thanks to those members who have supported the newsletter this issue and as always, good luck with your own research. Please feel free to voice your opinions either through Te Reo or at the forthcoming AGM. Haere Ra Bruce MATHERS Mei 2010 MAORI BANK$ About 1885, King Tawhiao, the second Maori King, proposed to establish a bank called the Bank of Aotearoa. Under his direction bank notes and cheque forms were printed. However the Government of the day refused to grant a charter and the scheme never eventuated. In recognition of King Tawhiao s efforts in the early days of the New Zealand banking industry, his portrait was first incorporated in the early Bank of New Zealand notes. This theme continued in the first issue of Reserve Bank of New Zealand notes in 1934 and in the second issue in 1940 his portrait was featured in the watermark. (Source Reserve Bank of New Zealand) Do any readers still have one of these old currency notes? A blank cheque of this bank is held in the Hocken Library in Dunedin. In 2001, knowing I had worked in a bank, a fellow genealogist gave me a copy of a cheque drawn on a bank named Maungatautari Peeke, together with her translation of the Maori words on it. (My old friends in the ANZ Bank may have been amused to know that I checked this document to see whether or not it met all the requirements (Continued on page 7)

TE REO PAGE 7 (Continued from page 6) of the Bills of Exchange Act 1908 plus amendments the law governing cheques!) Anyway, I decided to refer it to Barbara METCALFE who was at that time the ANZ Bank s New Zealand Archivist. Barbara was quite fascinated and surprised, as she couldn t find mention by learned writers of any Maori Bank other than the Bank of Aotearoa. Above: A copy of a cheque drawn on a bank named Maungatautari Peeke. Below: Translation. (Continued on page 8)

PAGE 8 TE REO (Continued from page 7) What did my own efforts tell me? Well the date (March 17 th 1905) and the signature (Ingi Ki Tawhiao) suggested that the cheque was issued by the fourth Maori King, Te Rata Mahuta Tawhiao Potatau Te Wherowhero, to give him his full name ( ), who travelled to England in 1914 and was granted an audience with King George V. Then my New Zealand Historical Atlas revealed that Maungatautari was the name of a place and a mountain in the Waikato, the latter of great importance to the Maori in mythology and history. Also, it was interesting to note that the cheque was No. 47 and that it pictured the huia, which bird is said to have been extinct since People who live in the Waikato, particularly in Cambridge, may be familiar with the rest of this story. For my part I found it on the Internet in an essay J.H. Alexander had written for the National Library of New Zealand. I shall quote only extracts. Sales in the early 1880s by owners of Maori land resulted in large sums of money for deposit with local banks. The Maori reasoned that as the Europeans were making a profit by keeping their money, there was no reason why they should not be their own Bankers and enjoy the profit themselves. A Bank to the Maoris of those days was a place where money was kept for safety, to be available to the owner when required. Hence the name in translation of the Prospectus The Maungatautari Money House. (My modern Maori dictionary defines Peeke as sack. Appropriate for a treasury?!) There were no advances, no overdrafts: everything would go in; nothing would go out. The Directors were mostly well-known Chiefs selected from various tribes. Depositors were confined to people of the Maori race. The premises consisted of a large raupu whare divided into three compartments office, strong room, and sleeping compartment. Hours for deposit were 10 am to 4 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Initially there was great confidence. Every Maori who had a pound which he could not otherwise dispose of put it in the Bank that it might grow. But disquiet developed when it was observed that some directors had unlimited resources at their disposal. Depositors demanded their money back, but the directors refused to give it. Opposition banks were attempted without success. The source of deposits had all been used up. When the Bank was at the zenith of its power, the directors decided that the money in the bank could not be used for a better cause than to finance a trip by them to England to lay a petition before the Great Pakeha Queen who would redress all the wrongs their race had suffered. When they learned of this, depositors wreaked their fury on remaining officials and the Money House, which was reduced to a heap of smouldering ashes. The audacious defence of the directors (Continued on page 10)

PAGE 10 TE REO Additional Sources : Above is a cropped image of a blank bank cheque for the Bank of Aotearoa blank cheques of this type are also thought to be held by both the Te Awamutu and Cambridge Museums and the Hocken and Otago Libraries. The full image is available at (Continued from page 8) upon return from England was that their mission had been a success, and did not the depositors know that it was the custom of Banks to charge interest? In other words, the interest charge for keeping their money had eaten up all the principal! All of which makes cheque No. 47, of which I was given a copy, a mystery. If depositors could not touch their money, why was it drawn? This story rings a bell for me. I seem to remember reading about it long ago in a magazine article which included a photo of the raupu whare.`` About nine years after I last wrote about Maori Banks, my wife and I were shouted by one of our daughters to a short holiday at a surprise destination. Imagine my surprise and delight when it turned out to be a motel complex near an entry to Maungatautari Mountain Scenic Reserve. The facsimile and translation of the Maungatautari Peeke cheque were given to me some years ago by pioneer Auckland genealogist Alice LOOSE. The article Maori Banks is one I wrote for a newsletter for retired ANZ Bank staff and their families. The story of this bank, on which I based the article can be found on the National Library website Te Ao Hou (The New World). Selwyn PAINE. teaohou/image/mao29tea/mao29tea050.html

TE REO PAGE 11 ARMY RECORDS With ANZAC Commemorations only a few days ago, it is a timely reminder of the wealth of information available through army records; NZDF Archives Preserving our Military Heritage for New Zealand. NZDF Archives at Trentham Military Camp is the repository for some 1.5 million personnel files relating to 420,000 New Zealand service personnel who served in New Zealand s Military Forces. These files are an invaluable resource for documenting the social and military history of New Zealand. They provide a unique record of the military service of the men and women who defended our country at home and overseas. NZDF Archives holds the files of all those who served in New Zealand s military forces from the 1st January 1921 to the present day. South African War ( ) and First World War ( ) files. Almost all of the files of those who served in the South African War and the First World War have been transferred to Archives New Zealand in Wellington. For information about these files please contact Archives New Zealand. NZDF Archives continues to hold the files of only the relatively small number of South African and First World War veterans who continued to serve after 1st January 1921 or who re-enlisted to serve during the Second World War ( ). Records of service in Australian forces. Copies of personal service records can be requested via the National Archives of Australia's (NAA) RecordSearch database. RecordSearch describes over 7.7 million records created by 9000 Australian Government agencies, mostly since Searchable records include documents, photographs, posters, maps, films and sound recordings. Generally, 30 years after a record is created, the public can access it. We continuously add new descriptions and digital images. Currently, 18.2 million digital images are available for viewing. The Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) was a First World War army corps of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force that was formed in Egypt in 1915 and operated during the Battle of Gallipoli. General William BIRDWOOD commanded the corps, which comprised troops from the First Australian Imperial Force and 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The corps was disbanded in 1916 following the Allied evacuation of the Gallipoli peninsula and the formation of I Anzac Corps and II Anzac Corps. Source :

NZSG Māori Interest Group, pages A4. $18.00 including P&P within New Zealand. Available from the Secretary of the NZSG Māori Interest Group: Brenda Joyce, 17 Peterhouse Street, Tawa, Wellington 5028 or NZSG, PO Box 14036, Panmure Auckland The first edition of our Whakapapa guide was written nearly three years ago and, mainly because of recent legislation, has become outdated. The committee worked hard last year to write an updated and expanded edition. This was launched at the AFFHO Congress in Auckland, January It discuses the philosophy underlying whakapapa research and includes many more examples of documents that can be accessed and where to find them, useful websites and suggested answers to many frequently asked questions. TAKOA TE AKA KUMERA O AOTEAROA This book is a comprehensive directory of New Zealand marae their contact persons and postal and addresses. It is invaluable as the material is frequently updated and new editions printed. Most public libraries have copies. 14 PAGE 14 TE REO WHANGANUI RESEARCH Most people researching their whakapapa are aware of libraries and repositories that hold national resources such as Archives New Zealand and the National Library. However, once you have found out the Iwi and Hapu to which your people belong it is well worth while going to the local repositories as they often hold a wide range of local resources. What is more the staff will be knowledgeable about the people and history of their area and may be able to offer specialized local advice about your research. I was recently in Whanganui and spent a wonderful time exploring the research opportunities in the city. There has recently been some controversy about the spelling. Basically, the river and the district are spelled with an H ie Whanganui while the city has usually been spelled without the H ie Wanganui. It seems that now the city name can be spelled with or without the H. Repositories are all sited close together in the city centre so they are easily accessible to visitors. Apart from the Museum Archives ($5.00) using the archives in person is free although you will be charged a nominal fee for photocopying. For some you will need to make an appointment. If you are unable to visit the city staff will carry out research for you for $60.00 per hour. It is important to gather together all the information you already have and write Alexander Heritage and Research Library. This is a beautifully maintained Art Deco building with a spacious reading room holding a wide range of resources, books, records, on-line access to data bases and extremely helpful staff who will advise you on your research. 18 PAGE 18 TE REO CANOES, TRIBES AND SUB-TRIBES OF THE WHANGANUI REGION Te taura whiri o Hinengākau, the plaited rope of Hinengākau, describes the relationship amongst the three hapū (sub-tribes) of Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi, and their connection to the Whanganui River. To their east are Ngāti Apa, Ngāti Hauiti and the hapū of inland Pātea, on the west side of the Ruahine Range. To the west are Ngā Rauru Kītahi and the peoples of Taranaki, including Ngāti Ruanui. The Whanganui people and Ngā Rauru trace descent to the Aotea waka (canoe), which made final landfall at Pātea. Ngāti Apa are affiliated with the Kurahaupō canoe, while the people of inland Pātea trace their lineage to Tamatea-pōkaiwhenua of the Tākitimu, who explored the Rangitīkei area and up the Whanganui River. 19 TE REO PAGE 19 CAN YOU HELP? We are planning a series of items about access to whakapapa research in the regions. Once you have found out the Iwi and Hapu to which your people belong it is well worth while going to the local repositories as they often hold a wide range of local resources. What is more the staff will be knowledgeable about the people and history of their area and may be able to offer specialized local advice about your research. The first item is on the previous pages about Whanganui District and Wanganui city. We ask members to write similar items about local areas they know well as these will be most helpful to our readers... not long items that will take hours to write just factual information about whakapapa research in the Regions. Please consider contributing your specialized local knowledge. or post to the groups secretary. BJ INFORMATION OFFERED A friend has recently pointed me in the direction of the above-mentioned site and what a Treasury it is! BM The Coromandel Heritage Trust was formed in 2003 to establish THE TREAS- URY, a purpose-built archive and family history centre in Thames, New Zealand. The Treasury will preserve and promote the history and stories of the people in this region - a region which played such a big part in the early development of New Zealand. The Treasury houses an ever-growing collection of resources relating to the early history of Thames and the entire Coromandel Region. For the historical researcher, we have a large collection of history books (Continued on page 20) Queen Aotea, third wife of King Tawhiao, mother of Puahaere.
