First, we will look at HeritageQuest Online where you can find census records, local histories, and more. Then, we ll explore Ancestry Library Edition, where you can find a wide variety of historical records and images. You ll get a chance to search both of these as we move forward.

Let's see what resources GALILEO provides for Alice's genealogy research. Slide 4 Using HeritageQuest Online Duration: 00:00:25 Finding Genealogy Databases To help Alice see all of the genealogy resources in GALILEO, click the Genealogy link on the Browse by Subject tab and then click the Genealogy category. Then, you will see the Subject Search tab, but go ahead and click on the Articles and Databases tab to see a list of all the databases. We will look at two of the these, but let's start with HeritageQuest Online. Click Play to see what you and Alice can find in HeritageQuest Online.

Explore HeritageQuest Find Your Folks! HeritageQuest Online includes searchable census images, books, periodicals, and more. Try finding your ancestors...you might even find a few famous people, too. Click the blue dots to find out what's here. Click the Finished?" button when you are ready to move on. Census Find families and their neighbors in the census records. Census Tip: Maps In the Browse Census section, you can choose to see state maps from different years. This is great for knowing when counties were created and how county lines changed over time. Books Find books with family histories or information about places in your area. PERSI Look for article citations in PERiodical Source Index (PERSI), which includes many genealogy and history periodicals. In each citation, there is a link to request the full text of the article. Revolutionary War If an ancestor fought in the

5 Revolutionary War, these applications have wonderful details. This example is for Deborah Sampson Gannett, a woman who fought under the alias Robert Shurtleff. The record indicates she fought bravely and was wounded in battle. The Committee on Revolutionary Pensions decided to grant her husband's request for her pension after her eventual death due to the wounds she received. Freedman s Bank The Freedman s Bank includes records of depositors in branches of the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company, , which was set up after African Americans were freed from slavery. There were branches in Atlanta, Augusta, and Savannah. This example is about Jacob Reilly, who was a cook for several privates in General Sherman's army. U.S. Serial Set The U.S. Serial Set includes documents of Congressional actions, such as memorials, petitions, and private relief actions. In this example, the governor of Georgia is requesting payment from the federal government for use of the railroads after the war.

Search Census: Abraham Lincoln Browse the census for historical state maps Find a book about your area Search Revolutionary War: Robert Shurtleff Search Freedman s Bank: Jacob Reilly Search Serial Set: your area Now it's your turn to see what you can find. You should see a new window that just opened on your computer screen. If your pop-up blocker stopped it, you will need to allow pop-ups from this site and then replay this slide. Use the buttons at the bottom of the player to go back and then forward to this slide again. Go ahead and explore HeritageQuest Online. If you can't think of something at the moment, here are some search ideas for each section: - Search for Abraham Lincoln in the census records. - Remember to Browse the census records to see historical state maps. - Find a book about your area or about a family in your town. - Look for Robert Shurtleff in Revolutionary War records and read her story. - See Jacob Reilly's record in the Freedman's Bank records. - Check the Serial Set for Congressional actions in your area. 8 Find all this and more Click the blue dots to learn more about navigating to these items. One Search Box There is one search box from which you can search all of the content in Ancestry Library Edition. Notice that you can add major life events or family members if you know them to narrow your search. Advanced Search Options Try the Show Advanced link to see even more search options. See Database Catalog Try this link to see a list of all of the databases within Ancestry Library Edition. Charts and Forms The Charts and Forms tab provides ancestral charts to keep records of a family tree as well as forms to track research. The blank census forms can be helpful when interpreting scanned images of old census records. Search by State or See Collections Click the Search button to search for records by state or to see all of the collections in Ancestry Library Edition. Or, you can use the dropdown menu to search within certain types of records. Click Finished? See more about

Explore Ancestry We just saw how to navigate Ancestry Library Edition. If you click the Search button, you'll be able to see all of the special collections in Ancestry Library Edition. Click the blue dots to investigate. Birth, Marriage, and Death Find vital records, which may include an ancestor's dates, places, names, and other information. The Social Security Death Index, a collection of note in this area, includes millions of records with names, birth and death dates, and last residence. Census and Voter Lists include census records dating from 1790 to 1930 for the United States as well as many state and county records. (The 1940 census records will not be released to the public until 2012.) There are also census records back to 1841 to 1901 for the United Kingdom and some from Australia, Canada, and Germany. This area also

10 includes voter lists. Immigration and Travel Immigration and travel records include passenger lists from many ports in the United States, particularly New York, Boston, and Philadelphia as well as citizenship records, passports, immigration books, and more. Military Military records include draft, enlistment, and service records; veteran and prisoner lists; awards and honors; and more. Collections of note in the military records are the WWI Draft Registration Cards, records from WWII and the Korean Conflict, and an extensive Civil War collection. Schools, Directories, and Church Lists This section includes city and area directories, professional and organizational directories, church histories and records, and more. Tax, Criminal, Land, and Wills This includes land records, tax lists, court records, wills, and bank and insurance records. Reference, Dictionaries, and Almanacs Ancestry Library Edition also includes reference materials with dictionaries, maps, and more for assistance in

11 locating and understanding records. This section includes a map center with many historical United States maps; the Genealogical Library Master Catalog with citations for family histories, genealogies, and town and county histories from libraries all over the U.S.; and a guidebook to help a genealogy researcher get going in the right direction. Stories and Publications The Stories and Publications section includes a search of an extensive list of family and local histories, oral histories and interviews, obituaries, historical newspapers, genealogy publications, and more. Photos and Maps The Photos and Maps section includes historical photos from around the world, school yearbooks, and a collection of historical maps from 1513 to 1990.

Expand the new window and click on Ancestry Library Edition. Search for a famous person, such as Mary Flannery O'Connor or a relative of yours. Go to the Search tab and click on Georgia to see all the databases available for Georgia. Search Photos and Maps to find an image from your area. Don't forget to check Charts and Forms to see what your researchers may be able to use. When you are ready to move forward, click the Play button. We'll do a quick review and take the quiz when you get back.

First, we saw that we can find our ancestors and even some famous people when searching genealogy databases, such as HeritageQuest Online. We also found local histories and records there. Then, we explored Ancestry Library Edition and found that we could find many historical records and stories by state and print charts to help genealogy researchers.
