1 AP European History Course Overview This course consists of four quarters. During each quarter there will be multiple opportunities for DBQ and FRQ writing practice. In addition to reading the text, a variety of short primary source readings and excerpts will be provided so students can read multiple authors and experience a variety of viewpoints. This will allow students more opportunity to critically read, to engage in meaningful historical analysis, and practice comparative analysis of documents. In addition, students will have an increased opportunity to practice the skills needed to systematically and effectively interpret documents. I have a program we work from that breaks the DBQ writing process into steps such as how to interpret written documents, understanding the formal features of visual documents, learning to dissect the question, writing a thesis and the like. At least two MC tests will be administered quarterly to assess mastery of content and one take home essay exam. The take home essay exam will be interpretive or analytical in nature and will give students an extended opportunity to analyze primary sources such as maps, pictures, posters, speeches and to use those sources as evidence to reach conclusions based on fact. These essays will cover the broad themes of intellectual-cultural, political-diplomatic, and social-economic history. A majority of the content will be delivered by PowerPoint. The students are given copies of the notes and are required to fill in as we go. I add to the outline by using a plethora of maps, art, political cartoons, tables and graphs. I have embedded video and audio such as speeches and propaganda examples to accompany the text. I usually have an accompanied question for discussion. I also use a student response system called Beyond Question to help keep kids focused. These questions are embedded in the lectures and serve as daily quiz scores. Course Outline First Quarter: Introduction, fast forward 8,000 BCE to Renaissance with focus on Late Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation, Religious Wars, European Expansion, Absolutism and Constitutionalism, The Scientific Revolution, The Enlightenment, 18 th Century expansion of Europe.
