USDA How Satellite the Imagery USDA s Archive Satellite Imagery Archive Works A. What is the USDA Satellite Imagery Archive? B. What are the benefits of participating in the USDA Archive? C. What types of satellite imagery are available? D. How can we see what is available? E. Can we order satellite imagery for a specific project? For more information, please contact: Robert Tetrault USDA-SIA Manager (202) robert.tetrault@usda.gov April 25, 2006 RS
A USDA-SIA Background The USDA s Satellite Imagery Archive was founded by a MOU in Signers include: Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services FSA, RMA, FAS Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs AMS, APHIS, GIPSA Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment FS, NRCS Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics ARS, CSREES, ERS, NAL, NASS Chief Economist Chief Information Officer April 25, 2006 RS
Participating Agencies Each agency participates by paying a subscription fee. The fees are used for: Contract support to develop cataloguing system Manage and process requests from participating agencies Develop and negotiate contracts with satellite imagery vendors Some funding to the imagery budget. Participating Agencies are (2006): ARS FAS Forest Service FSA NRCS NASS APHIS RMA A April 25, 2006 RS
A USDA-SIA Subscription Model USDA-SIA runs on the subscription model which means that the more an agency uses satellite imagery, the less the imagery costs on a per-scene basis. $75,000 subscription enables access to a collection valued at ~ $18 million. Subscription model has resulted in cost-savings for the Department April 25, 2006 RS
B Archive s Subscription Model Reduces Per-scene Prices: USDA pays only 27% of commercial price Dollars per scene USDA Satellite Imagery Archive Reduces Price per Scene for Landsat Satellite Imagery $700 $600 $500 $400 $300 $200 $100 $ Price per Scene without USDA-SIA Fiscal Year Price per Scene with USDA-SIA Average price without contract: $585/scene With USDA-SIA: $160/scene April 25, 2006 RS
B Millions Archive has Saved USDA $16.2 million dollars $4.0 $3.5 $3.0 $2.5 $2.0 $1.5 $1.0 $0.5 $- Cost-Savings for First Reuse of Landsat Data Using USDA Satellite Imagery Archive $5.8 M Fiscal Year Reduced Landsat Data Costs $10.4 M Eliminated Redundant Operating Expenses April 25, 2006 RS
B Benefits Access to collection of satellite imagery valued at ~$18 million. Request imagery through web-based Archive Explorer Images are free to participating agencies Collection is mostly medium resolution Landsat imagery. Resourcesat-1 AWiFS data is new data type. Access to contract with seven satellite imagery vendors. Seven vendors are: Eurimage, Digital Globe, SPOT Space Imaging and OrbImage (merged into GeoEye) EarthSat and RadarSat (merged into MDA Federal and MDA Geospatial) April 25, 2006 RS
