They eah have a different purpose, and they are not meant to be used all of the time. Skimming is used to quikly identify the main ideas of a text and is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. Sanning is a tehnique you often use when searhing for key words or ideas. In most ases, you know what you re looking for, so you onentrate on finding a partiular answer. Sanning involves moving your eyes quikly down the page looking for speifi words and phrases. Remember that it is usually not neessary to read and understand every word in a text to find the answers to questions. Reading 1 Disuss these questions with a partner. a When you want to find something quikly in a text, how do you read it? Whih reading skills do you use? b When you read something for pleasure, suh as a book or a magazine, do you read it in the same way as you read a shool Chemistry textbook?
