1 Teaher s notes Teaher Support Programme William Shakespeare About the author Though we know little for ertain about the life of William Shakespeare ( ) modern sholarship enables us to reonstrut his areer with some auray. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwikshire, England, he was eduated at the loal grammar shool. At 18, he married Anne Hathaway, eight years older than himself, and they had three hildren. Some time later he joined a ompany of ators, and by 1589 was probably in London, ating and writing plays. In 1594, he joined fores with the brilliant young ator Rihard Burbage, and beame one of the shareholders in what later beame the King s Men, the foremost ating ompany of the time. For over twenty years, Shakespeare wrote two plays a year on average, experimenting with and reating new dramati forms, exelling in tragedy, omedy, history and romane. He beame rih and suessful, and retired to Stratford in about 1610, while still maintaining his interest in the London theatre. He died in 1616, and the first olleted edition of his works was published in (1604) is one of his tragedies. His other famous plays inlude A Midsummer Night s Dream (1594), Romeo and Juliet (1595), The Merhant of Venie (1596), Muh Ado about Nothing (1599), Hamlet (1601), King Lear (1605), Mabeth (1605) and The Tempest (1611). Summary is a blak general in the Venetian army. He seretly marries Desdemona, the daughter of a rih Venetian, Brabantio. At 1 Sene 1: The play starts with Roderigo, a young Venetian who is in love with Desdemona, arguing with Iago, s ensign. Iago has promised Roderigo that, in exhange for money, he would get Desdemona to aept his offer of marriage but he hasn t told him that she and have just got married. Iago talks about his hatred of for hoosing Cassio as his lieutenant instead of him. To regain Roderigo s trust, Iago and Roderigo inform Brabantio, Desdemona s father, of her relationship with. When Brabantio asks his men to bring lights, Iago unningly leaves Roderigo, telling him that he an t safely speak against yet. Sene 2: Iago tells a lie to. He says that Roderigo is responsible for angering Brabantio by telling him about the marriage, and Iago tells to wath out for Brabantio. Cassio omes to tell that he is summoned to the Duke s palae as news of war has ome: the Turks have attaked the island of Cyprus. Sene 3: Brabantio auses of using magi to get his daughter to marry him. defends himself suessfully in front of the Duke. By order of the Duke, soon has to leave Venie to ommand the Venetian armies in Cyprus. It is deided that he will be aompanied by Desdemona, Cassio, Iago and Iago s wife Emilia, who is Desdemona s maid. Alone, Iago reveals his intention of ontinuing to use Roderigo for money and his hatred of. Iago explains that his plan is to suggest to that Cassio is sleeping with Desdemona. At 2 Sene 1: In Cyprus, everyone is waiting for s arrival. A terrible storm has destroyed the Turkish fleet, and there s no more threat to Cyprus. Iago tells Roderigo that he still has a hane with Desdemona by making trouble for Cassio. He deides to kill Desdemona in her bed, whih is Iago s idea. Lodovio arrives, announing that is to return to Venie and Cassio is to replae him in Cyprus. Desdemona is pleased for Cassio and this makes hit her aross the fae in front of Lodovio. Lodovio is surprised to see how muh seems to have hanged. Sene 2: questions Emilia as to whether Desdemona was unfaithful to him. Emilia says that nothing has happened between Desdemona and Cassio, but dismisses her omments as those of a simple woman. eventually reveals to Desdemona that her infidelity is the soure of his anger, and Desdemona pleads her innoene. Emilia is ertain that some evil person has told to believe Desdemona has been unfaithful, not realising that this evil man is her husband. Iago urges Roderigo to kill Cassio. Sene 4: After dinner with Lodovio, orders Desdemona to go to bed to await him. Emilia makes Desdemona s bed with her wedding sheets as requested. Desdemona realls the song of a maid who was similarly abused, and sings it. At 5 Sene 1: Roderigo and Iago wait in a street to ambush Cassio. Roderigo attaks Cassio as Iago suggested, but Cassio wounds Roderigo instead. Iago stabs Cassio, wounding him in the leg, and hides in the dark. Lodovio and Gratoano arrive, and Iago laims total innoene of Cassio s injuries. Then Iago stabs and kills Roderigo in revenge for his friend Cassio. Sene 2: enters the bedroom. He kisses his wife one last time. And then kills Desdemona. Emilia is let in, revealing that Roderigo has been killed, and Desdemona murmurs her last words. Desdemona dies in front of Emilia. tells Emilia that Iago has told him about Desdemona and Cassio. Montanao, Gratiano and Iago ome in. Emilia tells the truth about the handkerhief. Iago is now in trouble, and stabs his wife. Emilia dies, singing the same song that Desdemona sang. Lodovio, Montanao, Cassio arrive, and wounds Iago, but doesn t kill him., realising what he has done, kills himself and dies next to Desdemona. Bakground and themes It is said that the primary soure for is a short story from Gli Heatommihi, a olletion of tales published in 1565 by Geraldi Cinthio. The earliest reorded performane was on 1 November, 1604, at the Banqueting House in Whitehall, before the ourt of King James I. Love and jealousy: Desdemona truly loves faithfully, but swiftly desends into jealousy beause Iago persuades him to be suspiious of Desdemona and Cassio. s jealousy and rage hange him ompletely, and destroy him at the end.
