1 This fall in Mixed Media upstairs at the Guild we have classes and workshops in stained glass, felting, five different types of basketry, shibori, basic and wool yarn dyeing, wheel spinning, knitting thrum mittens, silversmithing, weaving and tile mosaic, not to mention the famous wooden bird carving classes STAINED GLASS Introduction to Stained Glass DATE: Wednesday September 16 - November 4, 7-10pm (Wednesdays- 8 weeks) Instructor: Francine Dennis CLASS FEES: $192+ $50 materials = $242 This fun and challenging program introduces you to textures and colours of stained glass, glass working tools and patterns. In addition, you will learn skills like glass scoring, breaking, grinding, shaping, copper foiling, soldering and finishing. You will complete at least two projects. You will choose from one of the patterns provided for your first project; learn how to make a template from which you will create a Sun Catcher, using the Tiffany method. The course consists of eight three-hour classes. A variety of patterns is available for use in class. After you have completed the Sun Catcher, you will have the opportunity to try another project of your choosing. Templates made from the patterns are yours to keep. Glass for your project is included in your course fee. Enrolment is limited to eight persons. Required tools to bring from home: Pencil and Fine Point Permanent marker, Scissors, File Folder or 8 2 X 11 piece of poster board, Safety Glasses, One Sheet of carbon paper, Cork backed metal ruler, Kitchen sponge, Rag (old towel or T-shirt), and a Storage box (Plastic or cardboard large enough to hold all your tools and project pieces) Colour Wheel in a Celtic Knot design by Francine 1 of 10

2 FELTING Felting with Pre-felt DATE: Thursday Sept. 24, October 1, and October 15, pm. (Thursday evenings- 3 classes) Instructor: Pat Moore CLASS FEES: $60 + materials $20 Using dyed wool prefelt you will make a scarf, then choose a shibori method to embellish your scarf and dye it again. Depending on the shibori method you choose you could end with a bubble scarf or a stretchy textured scarf. Using more wool prefelt and cutting out designs from prefelt we will make another scarf that will have your individual mark on it. Material fee $20.00 BASKETRY Examples of Shibori: Stretchy and Bubble Textures Basket-Tee DATE: Monday October 26 th and Tuesday October 27 th,9 am. - 3 pm. (Bring lunch!) (Mon and Tuesday, 2 days of classes) Instructor: Rosanna Strong CLASS FEES: $96 + materials $TBA Here is your chance to use up all those different craft materials in your "I will use it someday" pile, like old tee shirts, guitar strings, rope, shells... Participants will create one of a kind twined baskets using found items from home or the dump (Walt Humphries would be proud). Bring extra bits to share with the others in the class! 2 of 10

3 Twining with Cattails and Rushes Basket-Tee DATE: Monday September 30 th and Tuesday October 1 st, 9 am - 3 pm. (Bring lunch!) (Mon and Tuesday, 2 days of classes) Instructor: Rosanna Strong CLASS FEES: $96 + materials $TBA Have you ever wondered what could be used locally to make baskets? In this workshop, participants will be able to use locally harvested rush and cattails to twine a lovely round basket. As well as, learn the technique to make rope with these materials and incorporate them into the baskets as another textural element. Twined basket by Rosanna Random Weave Baskets/Baskets with Willow DATE: Friday October 23 rd 7-9 pm and Saturday October 24 th 9-5 pm. (Bring lunch!) (Friday and Saturday, 1 evening and I day of classes) Instructor: Rosanna Strong CLASS FEES: $80 + materials $TBA It's a basket! It's a raven! It's willow! An easy basketry technique that can be used to construct beautiful nest-like baskets or easily adapted to sculpt realistic forms out of 3 of 10

4 willow. Participants will have an opportunity to harvest willow as a group during this workshop. Market Baskets Salish Raven random weave sculpture by Rosanna DATE: Thursdays November 12 th and Friday November 13 th, 7pm-9pm. (Thurs and Friday evenings, 2 classes) Instructor: Rosanna Strong CLASS FEES: $32 + materials $TBA Dump the plastic shopping bags and those cloth ones too in favour of your own Eurochic market basket. Perfect for the 12 items or less line at the Co-op or for carrying your favourite wine to the next potluck party. 5 Potato Baskets DATE: Saturday November 14 th and Sunday November 15th, 10 am to 4 pm. (Bring a lunch!) (Saturday and Sunday, 2 days) Instructor: Rosanna Strong CLASS FEES: $96 + materials $TBA Not just for potatoes, these beautiful rib style baskets can be used to hold many things around your home or garden. In my Aunt Mary's case, she is going to use hers for harvesting her gigantic Kelsea onions. A Basket for Onions or Potatoes or Whatever Else! DYEING Basic Dyeing Techniques DATE: Sunday Nov. 22, 10 am- 4 pm (bring lunch!) (Saturday -1 day of classes) Instructor: Donna McDonald Come spend the day playing with Procion MX dyes. We will be exploring two techniques that will yield some very interesting results with a minimum amount of effort - Parfait Dyeing and Scrunch and Pour. After a short discussion and demonstration on dye safety and color mixing, it will be time to play. You will need to purchase 1 m of fabric the day of class at a cost of per metre. This fee includes the cost of the fabric and the dyes you will be using. This will allow you to try each of the techniques once. Additional fabric will be available the day of the class for you to purchase. How much fabric you buy will be up to you depending on how fast you work and how much 5 of 10

6 you want to dye. I guarantee you won't want to stop at just one metre!! (Fabric fees must be paid the day of class!) Supply list provided at registration. Shibori Dyeing Basics Hand-dyed fabric DATE: Sunday Nov. 29, 10 am- 4 pm (bring lunch!) (Saturday -1 day of classes) Instructor: Donna McDonald This will be a fun day of creating patterns when dyeing fabric using the Japanese technique of Shibori. After a short discussion on dye safety and color mixing, it will be time to play. Three simple techniques will be shown. You will need to purchase 1 m of fabric the day of class at a cost of per metre. This fee includes the cost of the fabric and the dyes you will be using. This will allow you to try each of the techniques once. Additional fabric will be available the day of the class for you to purchase. 7 Wool Yarn Dyeing DATE: Thursday October 8th, 7-10 pm (Thursday 1 class) Instructor: Erin Suliak CLASS FEES: $24 + materials $6 plus yarn Revive your ugly stash yarn or create your own one-of-a-kind colourways. In this class we will learn how to dye wool yarn with vibrant low-acid dyes. Explore overdyeing and other techniques to play with colour. Bring a couple of skeins of wool or wool/silk blend stash yarn that you would like to transform, or purchase yarn in class. before after Ugly Yarn...and Beautiful Dyed Yarns! SPINNING Wheel Spinning DATE: Wed. November 11 th to Wed. December 2 nd, 7-10 pm (Wednesdays, 4 classes) CLASS FEES: $96 + materials $25 Instructor: Erin Suliak Captivated by handspun yarn and want to make your own? This class is an introduction to wool yarn spinning using a spinning wheel. Learn about wool, fibre preparation, spinning wheels, basic spinning and plying over four classes. A variety of spinning wheels will be available to learn on. Spinning Wheels 7 of 10

8 KNITTING Knitting Thrum Mittens Date Thurs. October 22, November 5, and Dec 3 rd, 7-9 pm (Thursdays 3 classes) Instructor: Cynthia Levy CLASS FEES: $48 + $30 materials approx (thrummed mitten kit), may be slightly more if needles are included = approx. $78 Knit a pair of thrum mittens to keep your hands warm and cozy all winter. Thrums are little bits of fleece that are worked into the knitting to create a warm and fuzzy lining for your mittens. Techniques learned in this class will include basic mitten construction, knitting in the round, and insertion of thrums. Basic knitting skills are required. SILVERSMITHING Silver Jewelry Beginner/Intermediate Level Date Mon Sept 14 th to Nov 6th, 7-10pm (Mondays 10 weeks) Instructor: Harriet Burdett-Moulton CLASS FEES: $50 materials = $290 Students are introduced to fundamental metalworking techniques and instructed on usage of specialized tools through detailed demonstrations and studio work. Projects include a ring, chain making, and metal fabrication. Course fee includes supplies for class projects and use of jewellery tools. This course accommodates both introductory and more advanced levels of study. Bring notebook, pen, dust mask to first class. Class limit is 10. 9 WEAVING Weaving Beginner/Intermediate Level Dates Sundays, pm (Exact dates TBA) Instructor: Nancy Kearnan CLASS FEES: TBA This will be a class suitable for beginners and those with some background in weaving. More details will be forthcoming. The Guild has both table top looms and floor looms. TILE MOSAIC Tile Mosaic Mirror Workshop Dates TBA Instructor: Dot Van Vliet CLASS FEES: TBA More details coming soon. In this class participant will decorate a mirror frame (provided) with tile mosaic. The workshop will probably be in two session 3 hours each, late October or early November, probably Wed or Thurs evening. CARVING WOODEN BIRDS Loons Beginner Level, and Other Bird Carving-Intermediate Level Dates Tuesdays starting September 15 th, 7-10 pm. Loon course is 6 weeks. Other Bird course will be Tuesdays after Loon Course finishes, Oct 27 th on for about 8 weeks. CLASS FEES: TBA Instructor: TBA These two classes are suitable for beginners (loon carving) and those with some background in carving (other birds). Tools are provided.
