1 EMF Quarterly Newsletter Summer 2015 Valentine s Eve A little unusual but with the 14th falling on a Saturday why not?! The residents handiwork, vintage style napkin rings and origami pink hearts (very much enjoyed by one resident!), completed the decoration on top of the Xmas table runners, A glass of wine was enjoyed by those who fancied it followed by a showing of the classic romantic comedy The Constant Husband starring Rex Harrison and Kay Kendall. 2 Chinese New Year Kung Hei Fat Choy or Happy New Year in Chinese. We did Burn s Night, we did Valentine s Eve so and we did Chinese New Year! In the lull between Xmas spring, whilst days the occasional day of cold brilliant sunshine is very much outnumbered by damp and gloom. To help cheer spirits and give a sense of busy purpose we will enjoy any celebration we can. Chinese New Year involved paper lanterns and laying the tables up whilst Prawn Crackers, Turkey Hoi Sin and Dowager Empress Cixi s Longevity Pudding (an up-market peach and fresh fruit mousse - peaches being a traditional symbol of long life) tickled resident s taste buds with different flavours and textures. The novelty of Fortune Cookies at the end of the meal rounded things of with much amusement. Easter Baskets Bit of a challenge but as ever residents rose to it! Using straws and wool, delightful Easter Egg baskets are made ready for an Easter Sunday Lunch treat.

3 Blooming Marvellous One of the pleasures of working at Pax Hill is seeing spring unfold as one comes up the long drive that scouts used to camp along! The early Snow Drops are succeeded by fragile Crocii and ground hugging primroses. Daffodils follow, the wide variety planted ensure a long season of this iconic spring flower and symbol of Wales. Mixed in with these are the Cowslips and haze of Forget-me-nots that herald early summer - even an occasional Blue Bell. We join in making own crȇpe paper flowers Some of our residents are very hands on others get a lot of pleasure from watching and can become fully engaged in others handicraft. Our Easter baskets are brought into early use to display the flowers and decorate the tables at our Family Afternoon Tea.

4 Well done ladies! And it was just ladies who joined in the Big Knit last year making little hats/egg cosies for the Age Uk / Innocent Smoothies Winter warmer fund raising campaign. The first be-hatted bottles have been spotted in shops so one was brought in to remind our ladies of all their hard work. Others just carry on making those useful squares for cosy blankets. Shut The Box A traditional pub game this is very popular played here in groups of up to 6 people with every one closely watching this test of maths and flexible thought!

5 Still Nimble! One of our residents, a former dancer, shows no problems bending low to get a good shot during one of our competitive ball target games. Precision Scrabble is not everyone s favourite game but those small boldly marked tiles are very useful for keeping fine motor skills as they get sorted into small ordered piles and groups.

6 Easter May not look much when they are being painted but with some careful folding this painted paper contributes to make a lovely Easter display with residents flowers and cards. A full house enjoyed another in the series of illustrated seasonal talks- this time exploring Easter Customs through the years and across the world

7 Grand National Hard on the heels of Easter comes the most famous horse race in the world and all our residents are keen to pull out a lucky horse and cheer it on one of these two ladies comparing their picks was lucky enough to win a bouquet! Spot of Sunshine From early March good weather gives the chance for some of our more robust residents to get out and enjoy another year stirring into life. Whether in our secluded garden or in the main grounds the sun encourages many residents out and about.

8 As an unusual treat we were visited by a beautifully behaved miniature pony who calmly enjoyed being petted, groomed and having a general fuss made of him by the residents
