2 THANK YOU! I am so glad you have chosen to download this short guide to embracing gratitude. And be honest, if I didn t open with a sprinkle of gratitude then I wouldn t be setting a good example. My name is Sarah Shard and I am the founder of wearewit.com Women Inspiring Together. Inspiring, coaching and opening people s minds to a better, more inspired and happier life is like oxygen to me. I am developing a series of workmebooks which are inspired by the problems and challenges that people have reached out for help with or that I have experienced benefit from myself. I have created this short guide (or taster) as an instant quick win for you to be reminded of what gratitude is, to help you look in the mirror of gratitude and to inspire you to be more mindful of the impact of simple thank you s on others. 3 GUIDE TO EMBRACING GRATITUDE The Oxford dictionary defines gratitude as the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. TIME FOR REFLECTION Have you ever felt under-appreciated? Do you ever think someone rude for not saying Thank You? Yes? How did that make you feel? Do you think you have ever made others feel that way? Even if its without realising HOW TO PAY A COMPLIMENT WITH IMPACT We have looked at HOW it feels to not be appreciated or be thanked. So let s consider what the impact of paying compliments and being thanked can be. GRATITUDE GOES BOTH WAYS! While receiving praise or a thank you makes you feel noticed and valued, it can also make you feel happy and joyful when you do it to others when you can see their reaction. I once read that with every compliment given a bond is strengthened, trust is built and conversation encouraged. How amazing is that, and actually how simple is it to put that into action and make a difference. EXCITED TO MAKE THAT DIFFERENCE, FOLLOW MY GRATEFUL IN 5 CHALLENGE
4 GRATEFUL IN 5 CHALLENGE 1) BE MINDFUL AND RECOGNISE GOOD THINGS AND ACTIONS Find a moment of quiet reflection recognise positivity around you. If someone made you smile tell them. 2) SMASH NEGATIVE THOUGHTS WITH POSITIVE If you identify something negative, think of something positive instead. If someone else makes a negative comment, challenge them with a positive grateful response. 3) DON T JUST THINK IT SAY IT EVERY DAY Say THANK YOU and mean it! Give a COMPLIMENT Share a grateful thought with someone 4) KEEP A GRATITUDE JOURNAL Getting started Day 1 note down 1 thing you were grateful for. Day 2 note down 1 thing you are grateful for AND 1 THANK YOU that you said Day 3 Note down 2 Thank You s and 1 example of returning a kindness Day 4 4 Note down 2 Thank You s, 1 return of kindness, 2 things you are grateful for. Day 5 Note down: o Thank You s o Things you are grateful for o Examples of where you returned a kindness o Thank You s or Expressions of appreciation that you were the recipient of... 5) FIND SOMETHING TO BE GRATEFUL FOR IN THE DARK: When you find yourself in a bad situation ask yourself: What can I learn from this? When I look back in a year s time, what will hindsight give me? What can I be grateful for right now? TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE TODAY AND EMBRACE GRATITUDE.
