P.: Chuck Jaessing Treasure: Frank Yanko Librarian: Walt Leimer Board: Wayne McCann Board Chuck Morris Board Stew Hagerty Newsletter Dave Therkildsen This Newsletter is sent to interested people for three months, and sent each month to all paid up club members. Join Now and enjoy the fun! Coming Events The next meeting will be October 4th the 1st. Tuesday of the month. The meeting will be held at 7pm in the Club House, Lima Rd., Huntertown. Mark your calendar now..demonstration This week s demo was a variety of project ideas for simple Christmas gifs. Lots of ideas and pics so bear with me. Chuck Morris: Standing turkey with cut out patterns. Great for Thanksgiving table décor! Chuck also mentions a cat and duck decoration which I don t have pictures of. Demonstrations The October Demo will be Joe Kretchmeyer on picture framing. For November Dean Ray will be hosting a guest speaker (Carol Johnston of Portland, IN, to discuss furniture making. Falstaff beer symbol...cut out using pattern, finish, add hooks and use as key holder World s largest 4 piece puzzle! Be sure to cut pieces at 2 1/2 angle. Note laser etching from Siege Productions. Meeting Notes We opened the meeting with 38 people in attendance. We will be having a Christmas dinner at the December meeting. In the next meeting(s) please sign up if you are bringing a dish. Don't forget about out sponsors on the last page of this news letter when you start your Christmas shopping. Condolences for the unexpected passing of one of our long term members, Jim Jackson. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Obituary: obituaries/fortwayne/obituary.aspx?n=james-r-jackson- Birdhouses and feeders are always a hit. Here is a sample birdhouse using rectangular shaped materials built by Chuck and his grandson. This mobile is interesting. Made of 1/2 x 1/2 stock and painted bright red. Place in different setting positions to see different shapes including the Star of David. You can never go wrong with pens. Huntertown woodworkers club offers reasonably priced kits and free advise. Please keep you r address up to date! Do you have any questions about the Three Rivers Woodworkers Club Call: Terry Shears
Demonstration (cont.) Allan Longroy: Snow flake ornaments. Make 60 diamond from end of board. Route, saw, whatever to get desired design. Slice to thickness and sand. No 2 snowflakes are alike? Maybe not in this case, but that s OK. Dennis McCann Three small snowmen. Why not? Lathe work is great for Christmas. Terry Shears: These 3 small vases are simple turnings that are easy to make and are a good way to use up small scraps. They are turned with a hole drilled in the center as opposed to hollowing out by turning. The small size allows you to exaggerate some of the dimensions for effect. These are made from spa]ted maple, walnut and zebra wood. They are finished using Deft lacquer and straw flowers used for accent. Dean Ray: This is Christmas tree bowl made from a pattern and a glue up of maple and walnut. This sample is finished using bamboo oil. Children love to take things apart and, sometimes, put them back together. A name puzzle helps to learn the letters in their name at the same time. The corners are rounded and the finish is Bamboo oil which is safe if put in the mouth. This idea came from a magazine that had a small sled on the counter and someone had written a menu on the slate. The idea was adapted for the sled. The sled can be painted or finished with lacquer, the chalkboard was purchased at Michael s Page 2
Demonstration (cont.) John Painter: This is a quick and easy project that is a great idea for a Christmas if at any time you need an idea for a guy John keeps an eye out for old clubs at garage sales and Goodwill, particularly the signature clubs form the past pros. Remove the shaft and add a bottle stopper and you have a great conversation piece. The #4 and #5 woods make the best size for the hand and these are old, so some refinishing may be required. Ted Roberts: Here is a candle stick holder and chess piece. Dust off the lathe, the band saw and get plenty of sandpaper. Hard maple and walnut finished with shellac. Wayne McCann: Wayne always has something interesting with some new lathe challenges to offer. Here are some candlestick holders, a vase with a precise fitting lid and a snowman with a less than precise fitting hat. Nice work! Page 3
Demonstration (cont.) Charles Jaessing: Here are some Lazy Susan boards from Chuck. Here he is using red oak layered with strips of walnut, one round and one octagon shaped. Notice how Chuck has glued up one long board and cut both from the same glueup. A tricky way to insure uniformity! Here is a sample of a pattern for a cutting board. Pumpkin? Apple? Whatever. The point is once you have a pattern you can reproduce that identical shape over and over again. Curtis Rose: We are all familiar with Curtis work with mobius structures. Don t have time to make one yourself? Well, Curtis has some finished product ready for Christmas gifts offered at special Christmas prices. Below are some samples offered at $25 each. Page 4
Show & Tell Projects Demonstration (cont.) John Gospodarek The top is a nice stocking stuffer and is easy to make. Just make it wide and low so it spins well. Cut a slight indent for the string and make the handle a loose fit. Easy to make if you have access to a bed sander like the Huntertown shop has. Cut long strips of your figured wood and sand it to your preferred thickness. Drill a hole for the cord and use sandpaper to round the corners. I took a string and put knots every 2 inches as a ridge to space them out as I finished them. The tassels can be found online from many places and at many prices. Below is the cost of my lifetime online order. 100 Floss Bookmark Tassels Assorted Colors Equal Amount of Colors $11.25 USD Cheese Slicing Board. Quick and easy project. Rectangle board with one thin cross cut and one drilled hole. I used bubinga wood and would not do that again. It has too pitted of a grain and is hard to sand smooth or finish. I wanted to use mineral oil for the finish but ended with tung oil because I needed to fill the grain. The kits are about $6.00 with shipping if you buy 5 or more. My total bill for 5 was about $ Kits at CheeseSlicing.com. Sheboygan, WI. (920) We have all seen John and others working on walking sticks in the Huntertown Woodworkers shop. I can say my last hike at Turkey Run would have ended badly if I didn t have one. It s easy and makes a great Christmas gift. Steve Moss: And here are some small lathe projects that would be greatly appreciated. Page 5
Demonstration (cont.) Stew Hagerty: Here is a plant stand made from walnut crotch wood that was re-sawed and book matched. This was a Valentine s gift do to it s heart shape. No power tools were used to make this project. It was done entirely by hand from re-sawing, to boring and sanding. It is short and designed to fit under a windowsill. Here is an interesting project where Stew used a special piece of wood to display his daughter s first CD. Show & Tell Projects Projects by Bill Sumney Black Cap Chickadee wall display This hanging includes 75 separate pieces made from 8 different kinds of wood aspen, beech, cherry, ebony, myrtle, locus, walnut and wenge. This was made to compete in the Indiana Woodworker s Challenge. Good Luck Bill! Page 6
Projects by John Gospodarek Never give up. Three weeks ago I didn t have anything to do on the Monday morning that I opened the Huntertown shop so I looked behind building 11 on my way in. We still had some 2 ft. chunks of slab wood sitting next to the saw mill so I grabbed one. It was thick enough to do a nice deep bowl so I started. I had gotten the bowl shaped and the thickness down to about ½ inch when something in the shop distracted me. When I turned back I caught the bowl with the gouge and knocked a crescent about 4 inches long and 1-3/4 inch deep out of the lip of the bowl. I could have just cut the side of the bowl shorter but the three missing pieces had broken clean and fit back in the crescent tight. The shape without them would not have been pleasing. I decided to mix black carpenters chalk and yellow glue to mend the break. I left it till Thursday and returned it. Sure a woodworker can find the break, but anyone else would most likely not see it. I m happy with it and it is good enough for who it is for. The three boxes are made from leftover sapele wood used for the sides. All have walnut splines with sapele top pulls/handles. Two have tops and bottoms of walnut and the third is cherry. All three are finished with many Projects by Steve Moss Steve offers a 3 tiered cherry tray. Also a cherry and a oak bowl with inlay made from Millput epoxy. Page 7
Projects by Curtis Rose Curits part #M-1000 is a mahogany heart mobius. This item is made from pieces of turned legs from a table. Projects by William Pulver Here is a night light made from segments of oak and walnut. This uses lathe techniques that are similar to those used in the segmented bowls we have seen in the past. The LCD light gives plenty of light without a lot of heat. An added surprise is the pattern that is projected onto the ceiling in a dark room as light passes through the openings between the segments, an effect and asset that Bill discovered by accident. Cool beams!! Projects by Walt Leimer Finally we have these 2 flower vases form Walt. Page 8
