2 Important Information LOCATION Observe these precautions: Install ridge vent so prevailing winds flow over the covered side of the vent and not into the open vent. READ THIS DOCUMENT BEFORE YOU BEGIN Thank you for purchasing the ridge vent kit. When properly assembled and maintained, this product will provide years of reliable service. These instructions include helpful hints and important information needed to safely assemble and properly maintain the vent. Please read these instructions before you begin. If you have any questions during the assembly, please contact customer service for assistance. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Wear eye protection. Wear head protection. Wear gloves when handling metal parts. Use a portable GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) when working with power tools and cords. Do not climb on the frame during or after construction. NEVER hang items from the vent! Do not occupy the structure during high winds, tornadoes, or hurricanes. Provide adequate ventilation if the structure is enclosed. Do not store hazardous materials in the structure. Provide proper ingress and egress to prevent entrapment. Prevailing Wind Direction Check area above the building for power lines. Do not install the vent when power lines are present over the assembled building. Location should be away from structures that could cause snow to drift on or around the building. Drifting snow can damage the ridge vent frame and film. Do not position the structure where large loads such as snow and ice, large tree branches, or other overhead obstacles could fall. Always check local building codes before you begin and follow codes as instructed. WARNING: The individuals assembling this vent are responsible for designing and furnishing all temporary bracing, shoring and support needed during the assembly process. For safety reasons, those who are not familiar with recognized construction methods and techniques must seek the help of a qualified contractor. DOUBLE-LAYER FILM INSTALLATION Structures equipped with a double-layer film include a layer that is Infra Red (IR) Retention film. IMPORTANT! During cover installation, install the IR film first! Examine the film and install it according to the instructions printed on the film. Consult list of building materials to determine if your building is equipped with a double-layer cover. 2

3 Important Information ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE Following the instructions as presented will help ensure the proper assembly of the vent. NOTE: Once the main frame of the building is assembled, install the ridge vent. To better understand overall building design and position of the vent on the frame, review all technical documents before you begin. The steps outlining the basic vent frame assembly are as follows: 1. Verify that all parts are included in the shipment. Notify Customer Service for questions or concerns. 2. Read this guide and all additional documentation included with the shipment before you begin. 3. Gather the tools, bracing, ladders, lifts, and assistants needed to assemble and install the ridge vent on top of the assembled building frame. 4. Check the weather before you install the roof cover and any end panels (if equipped). Do not install covers or panels on a windy or stormy day. 5. Attach the Z144 polylatch u-channel/slam rail components to the end rafters, main frame, and ribbon board (if present) as instructed in the building assembly guide. NOTE: Some fabric end panels wrap around the end rafters and are anchored to the back of each end rafter during installation. If the end panel for your building is installed in this manner, assemble the end wall frame and install the fabric end panel or panels before attaching the Z144 u-channel/slam rail to the tops of the end rafters. For buildings with polycarbonte panels, consult those instructions for important information regarding the installation of the Z144 u-channel/slam rail. 6. Install the ridge vent after the main building frame is assembled and before the roof film installation. 7. After installing the ridge vent frame, return to the main building instructions and continue. This applies to covers that stretch over the frame assembly. 8. Complete and return all warranty information as instructed if present. REQUIRED TOOLS The following list identifies the main tools needed for assembly. Additional tools and supports may be needed depending on the structure, location, and conditions. Tape measure or measuring device and marker to mark locations on the pipes and rafters. Variable speed drill and impact driver. (A cordless with extra batteries works best.) Metal-cutting saw or tool to cut pipe. Wrenches and impact socket set, hammer, and gloves. Adjustable pliers and self-locking pliers. 4mm Hex wrench to tighten set screws Ladders, work platforms, and other machinery for lifting designed to work safely at the height of the building. Safety equipment to protect head, eyes, hands and feet. UNPACK AND IDENTIFY PARTS The following steps will ensure that you have all the necessary parts before you begin to assemble the shelter frame. 1. Unpack the contents of the shipment and place where you can easily inventory the parts. Refer to the Bill of Materials/Spec Sheets. 2. Verify that all parts listed on the Bill of Materials/Spec Sheets are present. If anything is missing or you have questions, consult the Pictorial Parts Guide and all diagrams for clarification, or contact Customer Service. NOTE: You do not need to open the plastic bags containing smaller parts such as fasteners or washers. 3

4 Important Information PICTORIAL PARTS GUIDE The following graphics and photos will help identify the different parts of the vent system. Each component has a specific position on the vent and building frame. To better understand how to assemble the vent system components, review this guide before you begin. Consult the bill of materials for specific component information. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SKU/PART NUMBERS: Vent systems are available in many widths and lengths. Consult the diagrams for your vent system during assembly to position the different profiles correctly. Connecting the different components in the incorrect order will cause misalignment with other components. Review diagrams carefully before assembly. ALWAYS INSTALL THE DIFFERENT VENT COMPONENTS IN THE POSITIONS SHOWN ON THE DIAGRAMS FOR YOUR VENT SYSTEM AND BUILDING! Vent Bearing Plate Vent Rack Drive FA2902 & FA Vent Window Connector Vent Rack Curved Weather-Stripping Vent Rack Straight Vent Rack Vent systems typically use one of the rack designs shown. Consult the bill of materials for the rack used for your vent system. (The rack drive is sold separately.) 4

5 Assembly Steps This guide presents photos and diagrams to help in the assembly of the ridge vent. The availability of lifts, assistants, and other factors all affect ridge vent assembly. The same vent can be assembled in different ways. With this in mind, this guide does not present a step-by-step procedure. The best way to assemble the ridge vent components is determined by the contractor on site. For best results, review all the information in this guide before you begin. The procedure below outlines one way to assemble the ridge vent. Basic Steps: 1. Attach the ridge vent arms (PGRVA0500G17S35) to the rafters of the building. ATTENTION: Be sure to position arm on the correct side of the rafter as shown in the diagram near the back of this guide. Arms will align with the pre-drilled holes in the bottom rail when properly attached. If holes do not align, verify ridge vent arm position and that the correct bottom rail has been selected. CABLES: When installing the ridge vent arms at each end of the building frame, review the Connection Details Views 1 and 2 for the cable bracket (108503) positions. Cables are installed at each end of the ridge vent. 2. After installing all ridge vent arms, review the Connection Details diagrams and install the bottom rail sections (111612Z144) working from one end to the other end. ATTENTION: Bottom rails are specific to each building length. Locate your building length in the Ridge Vent Rail Layout Table (back of guide) and assemble the bottom rail in sections by attaching it to the ridge vent arms installed in the first step. Assemble sections in the order shown in the table for your building. Consult View 3 (Connection Details) to properly secure the splice of separate bottom rails. See also Additional Connections Photos. 3. Attach vent window connectors (111681) to the bottom rails. 4. Assemble and install cables at each end of the ridge vent frame. (See View 5.) Tighten cables as needed to square the frame of the ridge vent. Frame is square when corner-to-corner measurements are the same. See the Close-Up View (pg. 19) for an example. 5. Attach the slam rail (111613Z144) to the building frame. Consult the procedure on page 12 to install the slam rail. 6. Attach u-channel and flashing to the ridge vent arm at each end of the vent frame. See pages Install drive axle and related drive components. Use the 131S075 (1.315" x 75") swaged pipe for the drive axle. Secure each axle splice using an FA4482B Tek screw. During the axle assembly, be sure to slide the vent rack drives (111679) onto the axle before you secure the pipe joints with Tek screws. Consult the photos for additional information when completing this step. ATTENTION: Do not allow axle ends to touch the inside surface of either end wall. See photos on pages 8 & Install the vent rack and secure to vent window connector attached to the bottom rail (111612Z144). Tighen vent rack drive set screws. See Additional Connection Photo pages near the back of this guide. 9. Attach weather stripping (111983) to the underside of the flashing at each end of the vent frame. 10. Test the operation of the vent. 11. Return to and continue with the main building instructions (if applicable). 5

6 Install Ridge Vent Install the ridge vent framing before the roof film is installed. Consult the technical documents for the vent to get a general understanding of how the vent is assembled. Photos below show a few ridge vent details. Photo shows a sample building with an installed ridge vent in the open position. Do not install Z144 rail here at each end. Attach the Z144 rail to the top of the end rafters after installing the fabric end panels if equipped. Rail is included with the building. IMPORTANT: When attaching the slam rail to the end rafters, do not install where vent opening is located. See dashed line above. Photo shows inside view of ridge vent as seen from the ground looking up. Install vent cables at each end of the ridge vent only. Use the cables to square the vent frame on the building frame. Tighten until cables are snug. Consult the ridge vent technical documents for additional cable installation details. 6

A curved vent rack is shown in this example. It may differ from the actual vent rack sent with your vent package. Secure bearing plates to the rafters using FA4482B Tek screws. Attach components to the curved ridge vent arm at each end of the assembled vent frame. Cut to length as needed. Drive screws through the u-channel and flashing and into the vent frame bow. Space Tek screws evenly at 12" on-center. ATTENTION: Photos below show the installation of the u-channel. If you vent includes the flashing, review the diagrams on the next page before you attach the u-channel. Install flashing between u-channel and vent arm. 8

Drive axle for vent constructed out of 1.315" diameter pipe. Secure each pipe splice using FA4482B Tek screws Vent Rack Drive 10

View of vent drive as seen looking up standing inside the assembled building. ATTENTION: Use the screws that shipped with the mounting plate to secure the gearbox to the PGBRKATS01 mounting plate. Do not use the plate. Slam Rail PGBRKATS01 Slam Rail Gearbox Gearbox is operated by the hand crank. ATTENTION: Position the gearbox at or near the center of the drive axle, or in an area that will be easily accessible from the ground when building is in operation. Angle the gearbox as needed. (See gearbox note upper right.) Slam rail (111613Z144) for the vent is included with the ridge vent package. It runs the length of the vent frame and is attached to the tops of the rafters. Rail is installed after main vent frame is assembled. 1/4" x 2" bolts (FAH005B) and 1/4" nuts (FALB01B) 131S075 Pipe (plain end) Drive (3 pieces) 131S075 Pipe (plain end) Photo above shows the manual crank handle hanging from the installed gearbox. 12 Install Ridge Vent INSTALL RIDGE VENT (continued) Slam Rail Z144 Bottom Rail Z144 Photo above shows completed ridge vent as seen from inside the building. Review these steps to install the slam rail. 1. During the assembly, complete the hinged section of the ridge vent frame first. This is the portion of the vent that opens and closes. 2. After constructing the main vent assembly, close the vent so the bottom rail (111612Z144) is tight against top of building rafters. Check connections at each rafter for conflicts between frame components. Adjust as needed. 3. Mark the position of the bottom rail on each rafter for reference. 4. Locate all of the slam rail sections (111613Z144) needed to create a rail as long as the building. 5. Using the marks on the rafters as guides, attach the slam rail sections (111613Z144) to the top of the rafters using two FA4482B Tek screws at each rafter. Measure and cut the final slam rail section to length if needed. ATTENTION: Bottom rail (111612Z144) of vent will sit on top of slam rail as shown in the technical diagrams sent with ridge vent. 13 Install U-Bolts and Tighten Vent Rack Drive INSTALL VENT RACK U-BOLTS Vent rack u-bolts prevent the vent from opening too far and tracking out of the vent rack drives. After the ridge vent is assembled and attached and before the cover film is installed, install the u-bolts. There are two u-bolts for a typical ridge vent system. Attach one u-bolt to the vent rack closest to the gearbox and the remaining u-bolt to a vent rack near the end of the vent frame. Set u-bolts 10"-12" from the end of each rack. 1. With the vent closed, take an FA2906 u-bolt and slide it over the free end of the rack. Choose the rack closest to the installed gearbox. 2. Add one (1) FA2902 u-bolt plate and two (2) FALB01B nuts. 3. Using a 1/2" wrench, tighten the nuts until snug. 4. Move to another rack and repeat these steps to attach the u-bolt. 5. With the vent closed, return to each vent rack drive (111679) and tighten the two (2) set screws using a 4mm hex wrench. 6. Test the operation of the vent using the crank handle. Vent should open freely and smoothly. 7. Close the vent and read the care and maintenance information on the next pate. 8. Return to the main building assembly guide and continue as instructed. 13

14 Shelter Care and Maintenance CARE AND MAINTENANCE Proper care and maintenance is important. Check the following items periodically to properly maintain the shelter and installed ridge vent: Regularly check the film cover to ensure that it remains tight and in proper repair. Repair all tears and holes to prevent further damage. Inspect the cover-to-ridge vent frame connections to ensure that cover material remains locked in the u-channel. Replace all damaged or broken components immediately. Check connections and all fasteners to verify that they remain tight and in good condition. Inspect the vent drive components and test the operation. Tighten any loose fasteners or set screws. Do not climb or stand on the building at anytime. Verify that the side panel components (if equipped) are in good working condition. Replace curtain cords (if installed) and anti-billow rope immediately if worn or broken. Check the operation of the air inflation systems (if equipped) to ensure that hoses and fittings are tight and the the air pumps are working. Remove debris and objects that can accumulate on the building. Use tools that will not damage the cover film when removing debris. Remove snow to prevent excess accumulation. Use tools that will not damage the cover when removing snow. Check the contents of the shelter to verify that nothing is touching the cover or side panels that could cause damage or wear. If the shelter is dismantled and moved, inspect all parts and connections before using. For replacement or missing parts, call for assistance. Space below is reserved for customer notes. 14

21 Additional Connection Photos Use the photos on this page to properly connect two pieces of vent frame bottom rail. 1. Take one 125P006 splice tube and mark the center. Gently tap tube into the end of the bottom rail. Align center line with end of bottom rail. 2. Clamp tube to rail and secure using two FA4482B Tek screws. 3. Remove clamp, flip bottom rail over, and install two more FA4482B Tek screws. 4. Add the second piece of bottom rail and tap into place to set against the first. 5. Secure with Tek screws. 1 Center Mark ATTENTION: There are eight (8) Tek screws needed for each bottom rail splice: four on top of the rail and four on the underside of the rail. 21

22 Additional Connection Photos Use the photos on this page to attach each vent window connector to the vent frame bottom rail. Bottom rail is typically assembled on the building frame. Use these photos for reference only. Parts for each connection: vent window connector (1), FAG102B (1/4" x 3/4") bolts (2), and FALB10B (1/4") nuts (2). Complete these steps: 1. Take the connector and place it on the underside of bottom rail. (This is the surface visible from inside the building when vent is closed.) Verify that u-channel of bottom rail is on the side opposite the connector. See lowerright photo. 2. Carefully tighten the 1/4" nuts to secure the connector to the bottom rail. 3. 23 Additional Connection Photos Attach weather stripping to the underside of the flashing at each end of the vent frame. Weather stripping will seal against rafter when vent is closed. Weather Strip Installation: After assembly, attach the weather stripping to the underside of the flashing at each end of the ridge vent. Weather stripping will help seal the ends of the vent when closed. See the dashed line in the photo above. 23
